Hi together,

I did some further investigation of the problem and I detected the file
/etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/squid. This file is intended to solve the
issue, but it does not. Why? You will find the command restart squid
in it. But that command will fail. Changing it to start squid will
solve the issue and not only for network manager. Anyway: shouldn't the
script be located in /etc/resolvconf.d/update-libc.d/ instead of
/etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/?

Squid3 is thus not affected, because there is another resolvconf.d
script that solves the issue.

I'll attach the new file.

James, would you also be able to re-try an upgrade from Lucid to the
current Maverick version (slapd 2.4.23-0ubuntu3), and then confirm that
the slapcat command  does fail at that point (i.e. without having done
the manually recovery steps)?

(I'd just like to be sure that once 2.4.23-0ubuntu3 is installed it
really is too late for the slapd.preinst script dump_databases()
function to be able to export the database)

This would appear to be a corrupted package file. This will happen from
time to time, and is easily correctible:

Try this:

sudo apt-get clean

Then attempt the update again, it should re-download all of the
necessary .deb files and succeed.

It looks like maybe something interrupted your download.

Can you try running Computer Janitor, or opening a terminal window,
and typing

sudo apt-get clean

Which will remove any downloaded lists of files and packages. Then re-
run your updates (you may have to click 'check for updates' again).

temporary failure.

Every time I update dovecot, I get asked whether or not I want to keep

The tomcat6-instance-create command creates a local instance of tomcat6
that can be run without root priviledges.  However, the setup provided
is missing several features that the regular tomcat6 system-wide package
provides.

1) The Catalina and localhost directories are not automatically
created under the conf directory.

2) If the tomcat6-docs package is installed the docs.xml context
fragment file is not copied over.

3) If the tomcat6-admin package is installed the manager.xml and
host-manager.xml context fragment files are not copied over.

4) There is not root context installed and the default-root context is
also missing entirely from the system.  Therefore no welcome page to
indicate the installation was a success.

The net of all this, is that after installation of tomcat6-user and
associated packages it takes considerable expertise and time to get the
local instance of tomcat to look like a system-wide instance.  The wiki
documentation mentions none of this either.

There is not package tomcat-native that I can see.  The following works
however:

sudo aptitude install libtcnative-1

This bug also applies to the tomcat6-user package.  Why don't we just
have tomcat6 and tomcat6-user recommend libtcnative-1?

I had same problem.  Here is all that was in my syslog for squid after
the failed attempt to upgrade:

Oct 15 16:08:38 desktop squid[30985]: Squid Parent: child process 30989 started 

 
Oct 15 16:08:38 desktop init: squid main process (30985) killed by TERM signal  

 
Oct 15 16:08:38 desktop squid[30999]: Squid Parent: child process 31001 started 
 

Can't find anything else in the logs.  Can't find a squid error log
period.

likewise-open users reported severe failures and I investigated and
determined that the patch gssapi.diff (in openldap) contains
modifications to guess_service_principal() that are incompatible with
recent changes in OpenLDAP and results in random service principal
strings.

Attached is a replacement patch for gssapi.diff (named gssapi-2.diff)
