[Bug 723603] Re: vsftpd no longer supports both anonymous_enable and local_enable

2012-01-26 Thread atimonin
I've found out that this bug (and it is of cause a BUG) doesn't show up if all
configs for vsftpd are straight:
if shell is nologin, it should be /usr/sbin/nologin in /etc/passwd, it should
be mentioned also in /etc/shells, etc.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-hdp-hadoop] Ubuntu Server - Hadoop

2012-01-26 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  Status 20122501

Dev packages avaliable for hadoop, hive, pig and hbase in
  http://launchpad.net/~hadoop-ubuntu/+archive/dev

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hadoop-ubuntu/dev

  Target versions of Hadoop components:

  hadoop-0.20.205.0
  hcatalog-0.2.0
  pig-0.9.0
  hbase-0.90.4
  hive-0.7.1
  # the script I got from Hortonworks labels this as hive-0.7.1+ which includes
fixes to hive. - Yes - we might need to look at that - we should be able to
overlay the fixes if need be without rebuilding the entire project
  zookeeper-3.3.2

Q: Their website indicates they will use ambari as something
devops/juju-like. Clearly we want to use juju but have they made any ambari
assumptions?
A: No idea - one to ask Matt

  Package naming:

  hadoop
  hcatalog
  pig
  hbase
  hive

  Needs confirmation (conflicts with archive):

  zookeeper

  Assumptions:

Packaging will use bigtop as a base.
   - reuse of control file structure will help support bigtop packages in juju
charms as and when they support precise.
Java will NOT be rebuilt during the package build process.
Native libraries will be rebuilt during the package build process.
Q: What does this mean for the hive embedded in hcatalog (via
hcatalog-0.2.0/hive/external)? I'm guessing we just use the hdp-hive package we
create.
Patches may be required for native build components.
Debconf configuration in packages is useful for Juju charms and should be
applied where appropriate.
--- Debconf currently in use: namenode, jobtracker and hdfs_dir
Binary distributions will be used from upstream (no source build by default).
Q: Exactly what does this mean in this context? Binary distributions of ...
Are these the jar files inside the hortonworks/apache source (e.g.
./hive-0.7.1+/lib/javaewah-0.3.jar?
A: So most of the apache projects ship a binary distribution tarball which
includes all of the compile Java etc so we should not build from source - just
re-use these jars etc...

  Challenges:

hcatalog not packaged in bigtop trunk (need to check branches)
  JAVA_HOME and use of openjdk-6/7? JAVA_HOME detection - bigtop use a
specific package for this (bigtop-utils) which tries to guess - might be worth
re-using.
java-package as recommended approach to re-packaging Oracle java for Ubuntu
(generates Debian packaging from upstream binary distro).
Kerberos security - probably actually needs to be a charm configuration
option to secure a cluster.
Q: For Kerberos, do we have the necessary dependencies to get this done? If
so, I can do the charm work.j
Q: Re: Kerberos. We may need to really look into this as this will end up
affecting not only hadoop but, all of the other parts ( hive, pig, etc. ) as
well. This can really complicate the packaging/charming as well so, we may not
have time to get it all done in this cycle. Just my thoughts.
MultiArch native libraries in hdp-hadoop package - should not must.
Hive contains patches for hcatalog support - we need to work these in somehow
(maybe a overlay to the binary re-distribution).

  hcatalog:
External dependency on mysql-connector? and maybe mysql?
No binary distribution - only source so will need to be built locally to
produce release tarbal.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-arm-service-orchestration] Enabling juju for ARM

2012-01-26 Thread Robie Basak
Blueprint changed by Robie Basak:

Whiteboard changed:
  Question:
Is this using juju for direct deployment, or via Orchestra? -- Daviey

Via Orchestra. I think the main thing to test is juju because of it's
reliance on java with zookeeper. We don't need to discuss anything, just
test and fix bugs. -- Robbie

For juju to work on ARM, I am assuming that:

  1. ARM hardware will support IPMI for power management
  2. ARM hardware will support pxelinux emulation for boot
  3. cobbler's existing IPMI support will work with ARM IPMI

[Bug 615545] Re: Instances launched in a VPC cannot access ec2.archive.ubuntu.com

2012-01-26 Thread Noah
I agree with Eric and cloudcontrol, for CNAMEs being the correct
solution.

In the meantime, there's a problem with using any debian package from
within ec2 instances - you can't contact the repository to install any
packages, so using a package to fix the problem presents something of a
bootstrapping problem.

That includes, by the way, anything that requires apt-mirror, since apt-
mirror is not part of the barebones Lucid AMI, and thus requires
installation, which requires connecting to the repo...

I have an alternative solution, which requires no package installation,
and which I will be using until this problem is fixed. Rather than
installing packages, I have chosen the simpler direct manipulation of
the sources.list file, like this:

sed -i -e 's/eu-west-1.ec2/uk/' /etc/apt/sources.list

Change 'uk' to be whatever your closest mirror is, and you'll be running
again.

Hoping not to have to go back to a broken system, sorry. I missed the
chance of more debugging whilst it was still broken. Hopefully the
existence of this bug will help others realise it might be worth trying
an uninstall when encountering this error at least.

Re: [Bug 779512] Re: nut-2.6.0-1ubuntu3 behavior regression

2012-01-26 Thread Martin Ewing
Hi Arnaud,

I seem to have fixed my NUT problem by upgrading my system to Ubuntu
11.10. (upsd 2.6.1)

I never resolved the issue on 11.04, but your udev rules file probably
would have done it, I would guess!

Thanks for all your help!

 Martin,

could you please check this bug report, and apply the udev related
procedure I've documented at the end of the thread:
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nut/+bug/578200

Once applied, stop nut, unplug/replug your UPS USB cord, and restart nut
(at least the driver), and report back the status.

Status in “nut” package in Ubuntu:
   Fix Committed

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nut

Prior to upgrading to Natty, I had the nut-2.4.3-1ubuntu5 package and
  it was working correctly.

After upgrading to Natty, I have the nut-2.6.0-1ubuntu3 package and it
is not working correctly. Here's my release info:

  •[x4linux:~] mmusgrove $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 11.04
  Release: 11.04

The symptom is that it can't initialize data from HID UPS and so the
  driver fails to start.

•[x4linux:~] mmusgrove $ sudo upsdrvctl start
Network UPS Tools - UPS driver controller 2.6.0
Network UPS Tools - Generic HID driver 0.35 (2.6.0)
  USB communication driver 0.31
  Using subdriver: CyberPower HID 0.3
  libusb_get_report: No error
Can't initialize data from HID UPS
Driver failed to start (exit status=1)

This appears to be the old behavior from 2.4.x prior to 2.4.3.

This was reported for Debian months ago:

[Bug 903318] Re: juju ssh fails on local provider: pty-allocation-request-failed-on-channel-0

2012-01-26 Thread Clint Byrum
Agreed. I think this has to do with the fact that the LXC 'ubuntu'
template does not fail on errors, and there are operations which it does
that may fail, such as chrooting in and installing things.

One hypothesis I have is that the lxcguest package isn't installed
successfully because the networking details have changed.

Anyway, marking as affecting the lxc Ubuntu package.
