** Summary changed:

** Description changed:

+
+ Upstream commit:
+
+ e6cbc43 -
+ http://git.drbd.org/gitweb.cgi?p=drbd-8.3.git;a=commitdiff;h=e6cbc43
+
+ Description:
+
+ Latest 10.04 kernel (2.6.32-41) fixed and issue described in bug 963685.
+ Cause of this change, drbd module, build with dkms, regressed and can
+ not be used as intended.
+
+ Notes (original report):
+
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid with 2.6.32-41 kernel and drbd8

Kernel 2.6.32-41 fixed a consistency issue around UMH_WAIT_PROC in this
  bug:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/963685

This causes the drbd fencing script's exit codes to be incorrectly
interpreted which then breaks the drbd fencing:

This also affects linux source in all distributions after Lucid
with the applicable kernel versions patched in bug 963685 above since
the drbd kernel module is mainlined in those more recent kernel versions

  To replicate:

Have fencing enabled in drbd config:
  In handlers section: fence-peer /usr/lib/drbd/crm-fence-peer.sh
  In the disk section:  fencing resource-only;

Have both drbd nodes uptodate with one primary one secondary
Make the fence-peer get executed. I did this by:
Having drbd under pacemaker control. Both pacemaker nodes were online and
in-sync. Drbd in primary on node 1. Put node 1 in standby. Fence-peer will get
executed.
Fence handler will report fence-peer exited with 0 (broken) - such as this:

  May 15 09:45:17 kernel: [56645.420714] block drbd0: helper command:
/sbin/drbdadm fence-peer minor-0
  May 15 09:45:17 kernel: [56645.420920] block drbd0: helper command:
/sbin/drbdadm fence-peer minor-0 exit code 0 (0x0)
  May 15 09:45:17 kernel: [56645.420925] block drbd0: fence-peer helper broken,
returned 0

If you log debug output of fence-peer script (crm-fence-peer.sh) when
executed it exits 4 not the kernel reported 0.

This commit in drbd git should fix this behavior:

  http://git.drbd.org/gitweb.cgi?p=drbd-8.3.git;a=commitdiff;h=e6cbc43

This will cause complete failure of a drbd setup using fencing to auto-
recover or continue without manual intervention and repair.

[Bug 1000308] Re: php function cal_days_month does not exist after upgrade to precise

2012-05-17 Thread Timmo Henseler
Apologies, bug report withdrawn. Reason for this unexpected behaviour
was that via autoremove I accidentally removed some essential php
extensions/zend server packages from my system. If any, the bug would be
in the zend server package, letting autoremove identify those packages
as 'no longer needed'.

[Bug 998564] Re: package drbd8-source 2:8.3.7-1ubuntu2.2 failed to install/upgrade: drbd8 kernel module failed to build

2012-05-17 Thread James Page
Hi Noeli

Unfortunately the drdb8 package provided in Lucid will only work with
the released linux kernel for 10.04 (2.6.32).

You are using 3.0.0-19-generic-pae which is not supported by this
version of the package.

I would recommend you revert to the released linux kernel if you require
use of drdb8.

Marking 'Invalid'.

[Bug 994160] Re: package memcached 1.4.13-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-05-17 Thread James Page
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

It looks like you may have an issue with the memcached configuration
file in your installation.

/etc/memcached.conf is normally a file - but in your install its a
symbolic link.

Is this a localized change you have made?

I would recommend that you restore the original configuration file
either to the target of /etc/memcached.conf or to /etc/memcached.conf
itself and then run the following command to complete the upgrade:

  sudo apt-get -f install

Marking 'Incomplete' and 'Low' as I think this is an issue specific to
your deployment rather than a general issue with the package.

Thanks

Hi Sandino

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

For some reason mysql-server failed to start - but I can't tell why from
the current information provided.

Please could you attach any log files in /var/log/mysql to this bug

I have not quite figured out what exactly happens. It takes about 1 to
30 minutes to resolve the issue. On some machines it never settles
itself.

Certainly, if I manually adjust /etc/resolv.conf everthing works fine
immediately (name resolution, access to services). If I keep the files
the way they are, it is pure coincidence whether dns works (I had the
chance to use a wired LAN recently and it seems to be the same issue
there).

My guess would be that network manager and dns-mask do not work together
in all cases (in fact, they do cooperate only in just one case, after a
reboot). As I never reboot machines (if I don't have to), I put machines
to sleep, connect, disconnect, I practically never run into the optimal
situation.

Hope this helps.

Wolf

2012-05-17 Thread James Page
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

I think that this issue is probably due to the upgrade being
interrupted.

I would recommend the following steps to resolve:

sudo /etc/init.d/snmpd stop
sudo apt-get -f install

Hopefully this should resolve your issue.

I'm going to mark this bug as 'Incomplete' with a priority of 'Low'.

If these steps do resolve you issue please mark the bug as 'Invalid'.

Thanks

2012-05-17 Thread James Page
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

For some reason the /etc/init.d/nis init script is not present when the
preinst script for the new version of nis is executed during the upgrade
process.

Please can you provide the output from the following commands on this
bug report:

 ls -l /etc/init.d/nis

Marking 'Incomplete' pending your response.

Please note that any of the reporters of duplicate bugs can also provide
this information.

[Bug 996968] Re: Samba needs to be stopped and restarted in order to work

2012-05-17 Thread James Page
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

I've seen similar issues when using the following configuration:

  bind interfaces only = yes

This causes samba to only bind to selected interfaces rather than
0.0.0.0 - as it starts early in the boot process this fails as its not
guaranteed that all network interfaces have started when smbd does:

  start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up)

When you restart smbd after boot the network interfaces have started so
all works OK.

I would suggest that you either reconfigure samba to listen more
generically or add a upstart stanza to /etc/init/smbd.override:

  start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE=eth0)

You will need to change this to fit your configuration - i.e. which
network interface provides 192.168.0.0/24. For more information see
'man 5 init'.

I'm going to mark the bug as 'Invalid' as I think its specific to your
local samba configuration. If you think this is not the case please
comment and mark as 'New'.

Thanks

2012-05-17 Thread James Page
Hi Brian

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

As you state, the configuration options for squid3 are different to
those for squid2. During the 12.04 development cycle we did review
whether an automated upgrade of the configuration file was possible -
but it was not.

Please see the release notes for 12.04 re manual migration of squid
configuration:

Marking this bug as 'Invalid' as this is a know manual upgrade

[Bug 995523] Re: squid3 is killed by /etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/squid3 in Precise

2012-05-17 Thread James Page
Hi Steffen

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

1) Also /etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/squid can be deleted in precise
because squid is only a transitional package which leads to an failure
message in upstart.

Agreed - the squid package needs to tidy up files that are no longer
used (this is a leftover issue from the previous squid package).

2) I'm not sure that I understand how this bug is related to the ones
you detail above; squid3 by default does not do DNS checking and should
be OK to do reload rather than restart.

My local squid3 deployments see to deal with this OK.

Please could you review /var/log/syslog and /var/log/squid3/cache.log
for any pertinent error messages relating to the reload command and
attach them to this bug report.

Marking 'Incomplete'. Please set back to 'New' once you have provided
the requested information.

Thanks.

[Bug 1000710] [NEW] Attaching volume during instance boot doesn't work

2012-05-17 Thread Martin Packman
Public bug reported:

Using the newly enabled volume support on canonistack, it arrived at a
state where the volume believed it was in-use by the instance, but the
instance had not registered it. The volume then refused to be detached
from the instance, the command succeeded but no change occurred.

The sequence of events was:
* Start instance
* Create volume
* Wait till instance was listed as ACTIVE
* Attach volume
* SSH to instance... fails, instance not yet booted enough
* Wait more
* SSH to instance
* dmesg contains nothing about volume

The suggestion is the attach happened to soon in the boot process.

To recover, did:
* Reboot instance
* Wait till instance is listed as ACTIVE and can SSH to it
* Volume is now back to being available
* Attach volume
* dmesg contains information about the new volume

Yah it was odd at first because memory monitoring is one of the most
important features of a default munin-node install and the memory graph

Thanks for the prompt action and I hope it gets rolled into 12.04 as I
think a lot of people won't be able to figure out what happened.

Are there differences in these parameters between the working and

[Bug 1000716] Re: Package phpapi-20090626 Missing LTS 12.0

2012-05-17 Thread Ondřej Surý
There seems to be some general problem with your system, since both php5
post-inst scripts segfaulted (exit status 139):

 dpkg: error processing php5-fpm (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 139
 Setting up libapache2-mod-php5 (5.3.10-1ubuntu3.1) ...
No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already
   dpkg: error
 processing libapache2-mod-php5 (--configure):

I would suggest to check your system for general health (e.g. run at least
memcheck).

It is definitely not a bug in php5 and the description is also invalid.

[Bug 994698] Re: cloud-init disables ureadahead even when it might be useful

2012-05-17 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

- cloud-init coudl re-enable ureadahead if it is actually running on real-
- hardware.
+ Since bug 499520, cloud-init currently disables ureadahead by using a
dpkg-divert of /etc/upstart/ureadahead.conf. The reasoning behind this was
that:
+ a.) ureadahead was causing OOM on boot small vms (~ 300M)
+ b.) ureadahead inside a VM doesn't generally make any sense. Ureadahead
tries to optimize disk reads for ssd or spinning disks. Its methods of
determining if the disk of the system is ssd or spinning won't work in a VM.
+ c.) ureadahead is part of ubuntu-minimal task, and we did not want to change
that.

+ Recently, though, we've started using cloud-init on real hardware, where
+ ureadahead could be of use.
+
+ Thus, I'd like to have a better solution. I think ureadahead would ideally
disable itself if it found one of the following conditions:
+ 1 small amount of memory (512 or even 1024M)
+ 2 if it is running in a container
+ 3 no definitive knowledge of the type of disks used (if it thought this
might be a VM)
+
+ Of those options, determining the first 2 are straight forward, and I
+ would think could be done in the upstart job even. I'm not familiar
+ enough with ureadahead to know how easily it would be to determine
+ number 3.

  Related bugs:
- * bug 499520: default uec-image requires at least 300 M of RAM to run -
m1.small and c1.medium not needed by default
+  * bug 499520: default uec-image requires at least 300 M of RAM to run -

[Blueprint servercloud-q-chef] Getting Chef Back Into Ubuntu

2012-05-17 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  Discussion Topics:

What issues lead to the packages being removed from precise?
-  - Fast Chef development cycle over the last two years made current stable
branch 0.10.x while precise still had 0.8.16.
-  - solr package became out of date and broken, which blocked chef-solr [1]
-
- -- james-page: which version of solr is required to support re-entry into the
archive? is the current version sufficient or do we need to move to 3.6 (and
associated lucene 3.6 release)? I can help with either scenario and solr 1.4
is not actually 'broken' - just a little negelected.

-- btm: broken was my summary of BTS #602697 [1] which justified pulling
solr from debian squeeze. solr 1.4 should be fine, but we need to review the
bugs against solr to ensure this won't happen again in the near future.

+ 0.9.x - blocked by dependency upgrades.
+ 0.10.x - DD on contract to refresh packaging.
+
+ Current blockers:
+ merb - ruby-merb - working with debian-ruby team to resolve current
issues.
How do we ensure that these don't re-occur to ensure the long term viability
of chef as part of Ubuntu?
-  - Maintaining chef in Debian will help with this.
-    a) The debian pkg-ruby-extras team can use help, especially with the
current transition
-  - rails3 support in debian [2] for Chef 11
-  - Recommending users of Ubuntu and Debian to use the packages (instead of
gem installing) will also help.
-    a) The differing release paradigm makes this problematic. With a goal of
stability, debian/ubuntu follow a waterfall software development model of heavy
testing and then a stable release with minor bug and security fixes as needed.
On the contrary, Chef is under continuous development and improvement. The
version of Chef in an LTS release will be severely out of date in a year.
Providing individual bug patches (diffs) to this package would alone be very
resource intensive, but major features will be missing which provides a large
documentation issue. use the 'foobarblah' resource, except if you're on Ubuntu
LTS, then do it this way, cannot be achieved across all our documentation, let
alone the blogs and howto's of the internet. The latter will be improved when
we provide versioned documentation. Under the Ubuntu release model, this will
necessitate that the user upgrade their distribution whenever they want the
latest version of Chef, which is problematic for people running services in a
production environment.
-    b) Debian packages are the recommended installation method for
Debian/Ubuntu, but using the Opscode apt repository due to the above issue.
-    c) The recommended installation method in the future will be our
full-stack installer, to provide a stable version of ruby (missing in most
distributions, probably due to Ruby's release paradigm) alongside the latest
version of Chef in the simplest installation method possible. How software
should be installed is a matter of personal preference for many, and Opscode
aims to continue supporting distribution level and gem packaging for those who
prefer it.

I'm confused because
a.) dmesg on the first boot did not have anything in it
b.) reboot (without re-attach) showed the drive.

Those two items in the bug report just seem strange.

[Bug 1000710] Re: Attaching volume during instance boot doesn't work

2012-05-17 Thread Martin Packman
** Description changed:

Using the newly enabled volume support on canonistack, it arrived at a
state where the volume believed it was in-use by the instance, but the
instance had not registered it. The volume then refused to be detached
from the instance, the command succeeded but no change occurred.

  The sequence of events was:
- * Start instance
+ * Start instance (using ubuntu-precise-12.04-i386-server-20120424 image)
  * Create volume
- * Wait till instance was listed as ACTIVE
+ * Wait till instance was listed as ACTIVE (volume was also available at this
point)
  * Attach volume
  * SSH to instance... fails, instance not yet booted enough
- * Wait more
+ * Wait more (took quite a long time)
  * SSH to instance
  * dmesg contains nothing about volume

The suggestion is the attach happened to soon in the boot process.

  To recover, did:
  * Reboot instance
  * Wait till instance is listed as ACTIVE and can SSH to it
  * Volume is now back to being available
  * Attach volume
  * dmesg contains information about the new volume

[Bug 1000710] Re: Attaching volume during instance boot doesn't work

2012-05-17 Thread Scott Moser
I've attached dmesg output from first boot and second boot that Martin provided
me with.
Some things to note:
 * instance was 12.04 ubuntu-precise-12.04-amd64-server-20120424
 * both first boot and reboot took 90 seconds to get to the acpi messages.
These messages come as a result of 'module-init-tools.conf' upstart job reading
/etc/modules which includes 'acpiphp'. In my boot just now (and even
subsequent reboot) that occurs more around 3 seconds of uptime.

[Bug 1000710] Re: Attaching volume during instance boot doesn't work

2012-05-17 Thread Scott Moser
OK.
so, re-reading the above, and conversing with Martin.
things of note:
 * after first boot, the volume showed as 'in-use', but the disk was not
attached to the instance.
 * after re-boot, the volume showed as 'available' again. Basically, the
volume got stuck in 'in-use' when it really wasnt.

I suspect that what happened was this:
 * initial attach failed badly, leaving 'in-use'
 * the reboot (or possibly a timeout) kicked nova to re-evaluate the situation,
and it recognized that the volume was not in-use.

So, i think the real issue is likely that the volume just got marked as
in use, even though the libvirt (or something else) actually failed, and
then it took something (timeout or reboot) to get back to sane state.

[Bug 989355] Re: Unable to create Node: timed out

2012-05-17 Thread Sebastian Malcolm
Thanks Julian for giving us some insight into the cause of this issue!
If you have some insight into the command sequence MAAS is running then
I hope you can help identify a workaround to enable adding nodes or
create a mini-Howto manually remove a partially added node (from
Cobbler, dnsmasq, etc managed by MAAS).

But the MAAS server has a 7 second timeout waiting for pserv/cobbler
 operations.
Can we change this timeout as a workaround for this issue?

Does re-adding the node work quicker the second time?
How to do this if when the MAAS Add Node process is incomplete but did define
a system in Cobbler so the same node cannot be re-added in MAAS web UI?

In the couple of timed out failed adding of nodes that I've seen, the
MAAS web UI doesn't allow re-adding or appear to have an option to re-
try. Just naively re-entering the MAC address fails and I recall Cobbler
logging duplicate MAC address or similar error after defining a
duplicate incomplete system record (missing a mac-address field value).

I've tried re-adding after finding the newly added node's name from the
output of cobbler system list then remove it with cobbler system
remove --name=NewNodeName.

[Bug 999725] Re: broken start-up dependencies for ntp

2012-05-17 Thread Scott Moser
Hi,
Could you tell us how networking is configured in your system? Ie, are you
using network manager?

ntp (or any rc-sysvinit script) should not start until all static
networking is up. static networking means anything defined in
/etc/network/interfaces, but does not include network manager. I would have
thought that dns resolution should be ready at that point.

The problem description does seem to indicate that we should restart
ntpd on network manager network attach, though.
