Usually if I install nis package, I am going to use it. So what's the problem to trigger a lightdm.conf entry??? [Bug 1012649] Re: puppet-common postinst is confused by NIS
I've checked it, we have a puppet user in NIS but no puppet group. Btw. I don't think that NIS is directly the problem, I would expect the same problem with ldap. I think the script should check with getent if ther is a puppet user and only if there is no it should create the account. Then the same logic for the group. The issue indeed was not with bind9. It turns out that, for some unexplained reasons, the process of installing the php5-imap package screwd up the permissions of /etc/bind/rndc.key, which was not readable anymore. Thanks Sven. I'm not sure if this is a valid bug or not. I understand why it doesn't work in your case, but it could be argued that it's too much of an edge case to expect the postinst to handle it. So I think the workarounds are: 1) Do not have the puppet user or group in NIS/LDAP. 2) Have both the puppet user and group in NIS/LDAP. With the latest dnsmasq code the two dnsmasq instances appear to work correctly in all combinations. I just tested as follows. * With both dnsmasqs running, nm-dnsmasq forwards to the upstream nameservers and listens on 127.0.0.2; standalone dnsmasq forwards to 127.0.0.2 and listens on 127.0.0.1; the resolver consults 127.0.0.1. (That is, /etc/resolv.conf contains nameserver 127.0.0.1.) * Stop standalone dnsmasq (/etc/init.d/dnsmasq stop) and the resolver consults 127.0.0.2. * Comment out dns=dnsmasq and restart network-manager. With neither dnsmasq running the resolver consults the upstream nameservers. * Start standalone dnsmasq (/etc/init.d/dnsmasq start). It forwards to upstream nameservers and listens on 127.0.0.1. The resolver consults 127.0.0.1. In all cases name resolving works fine. Summary of what was required: * Get the latest dnsmasq from Simon's git repo. * Patch two lines in n-m: (1) listen on 127.0.0.2 instead of 127.0.0.1 and (2) register 127.0.0.2 instead of 127.0.0.1 with resolvconf. * Do something to cause standalone dnsmasq to be started with the bind-interfaces option. The latter something could be to include a /etc/dnsmasq.d/ file in the network-manager package, but this is less than ideal because the file will continue to exist even if the admin comments out dns=dnsmasq in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf. I wonder if it would be a good idea to hack standalone dnsmasq's initscript so that it adds the bind- interfaces option if dns=dnsmasq is present in NetworkManager.conf. I installed a clean 12.04 Precise with full updates onto a VM just to test this issue (also following the Flurdy install proc) and this is still an issue. Dnsmasq starts (will it only listen on lo?), and after a few minutes she decides to plug in the network cable and boot the LTSP clients. Will dnsmasq be listening on eth0 in that case? * The same can happen if she has configured network manager with a user-connection, not a system-wide one. Dnsmasq will start on boot; eth0 will get an IP only after she logs in. Will she have to restart dnsmasq after login to make it work? * Also, what if she was previously using a dynamic IP and she decides to set up a static IP? I'm pretty sure this actually no longer classifies as a bug, and is really an issue in documentation of upgrades / lack of reverse support. I don't have an old copy of my smtpd.conf file from when I upgraded and it first broke, but my new smtpd.com shows: auxprop_plugin: sql sql_engine: mysql sql_hostnames: 127.0.0.1 sql_user: x sql:passwd: x sql_database: mail sql_select: select crypt from users where id='%u@%r' LIMIT 1 If I recall, it wasn't listed as auxprop_plugin: sql before, and the prefixes of the user/pass/etc I think were not sql_ before. I had a broken mail system and had to downgrade postfix versions, finally got it working with the configuration change. The chief advantage of listening on the wildcard address is that it all works as interfaces come and go. You lose that with --bind-interfaces. It would be possible these days to have dnsmasq detect extra interfaces and bind to their addresses automatically, but the code to do that isn't portable. Are you using ldap instead of sql for your mail authentications? If you're getting the same problem that I initially described here, between saslauthd and mysql via cyrus-sasl, then I'd say it's almost definitely a configuration problem, as I spent a couple months pulling my hair out and screaming trying to come up with a solution or figure out what was wrong before realizing it was a simple yet uberly important change. I will probably clarify myself a bit. As I have also said in one of my previous comments problem is not only in smtp configuration. I use cyrus-sasl to get subversion server authenticate with active directory (ldap) and in current ubuntu package it is totally broken. I tried to set up virtual debian server with same version of cyrus-sasl2 package and it does work but does not on ubuntu so it's not just documentation/configuration issue but actually some kind of bug in this or related package.
