[Bug 1006898] Re: [SRU] dnsmasq fails at leasing issues when using vlan mode

2012-06-19 Thread Christian Parpart
Hey,

sorry, with most I meant the documentation recommends using
VlanManager (that is, VLAN mode) for networking.

Although, you cannot rely on such a behaviour, IMHO, because it
absolutely makes no sense to let hosts (that send a DHCPREQUEST) not
receive their DHCPACK.

[Bug 1006898] Re: [SRU] dnsmasq fails at leasing issues when using vlan mode

2012-06-19 Thread Christian Parpart
Could this be more safely worked-around in openstack?

forgot to comment on this one, well, I am no OpenStack expert, however,
OpenStack nova-network relies on dnsmasq for propagating IP addresses
via DHCP to their (KVM/...) instances, and OpenStack supports simple
networking (w/o VLAN) and VLAN-networking, and thus, I don't see how
OpenStack could work around this except using a different software than
dnsmasq (something that actually works) - or don't use VLAN at all.

2012-06-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
The proposed package (specifically the postrm) breaks Policy - you're
unconditionally removing a conffile on upgrade/removal/etc which will
destroy any user changes.

Additionally, I'd like to know what the likely impact of adding bind-
interfaces to dnsmasq is on users. What (if anything) will break on
users' systems?

Re: [Bug 231060] Re: packages dnsmasq and libvirt-bin conflict with each other

2012-06-19 Thread Simon Kelley
On 19/06/12 10:10, Chris Halse Rogers wrote:

interfaces to dnsmasq is on users. What (if anything) will break on

Three things change.

1) Dnsmasq loses the ability to provide service on dynamically created
interface. If an interface doesn't exist when dnsmasq starts, dnsmasq
will not be listening on that interface when it comes up. Similarly if
an interface changes address.

2) --interface=non-existent interface becomes a fatal error.

3) The semantics of -interface changes. Without --bind-interfaces,
--interface filters on packet arrival interface. With --bind-interface,
--interface=iface becomes equivalent to --listen-address=address(es)
of iface. So, on a multi-homed host, with --interface=eth0, a request
sent to the address of eth0 which arrives from eth1 will be answered
with --bind-interfaces, but not answered without it.

HTH

Simon.

[Bug 1015041] [NEW] Conflict between NTP and NTPDATE

2012-06-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

if you select time synchronisation over the internet, NTP must be installed
(offered in the dialog) . This results in a waiting loop (1 minute) after log
in.
I found a hint in the internet concerning NTP and NTPDATE. Therefore I
deinstalled NTPDATE, AFAIK installed per default. After this the waiting loop
is gone.
Think that the package manager should do this automatically.

[Bug 1015104] [NEW] package winbind 2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-06-19 Thread Joseph S. D. Yao
Public bug reported:

This is a systemic problem. Under the previous version I had installed
the lexmark-inkjet-09-driver package which installed using a shell tar
script. Unfortunately the description had one line with just a space in
it. Not a blank line: a space. Now, 'dpkg' could report to me that
this particular package had a blank line in the Description field of
that particular package. If it could do that, why couldn't it just
overcome this difficulty? And the line DID have a space in it! (I
tried to use '}' and '{' in 'vi' to get to it, and failed. 'Dpkg'
should be able to understand the same thing.)

When I tried to install 12.04 over the previous version, MANY packages
failed to install. They are now ghost images in the update manager, and
I haven't yet figured how to get them to install. The user interface is
missing such little things as the logout / lock screeen / reboot menu
and any way to run apps that were not already buttons on the desktop.
Help? Yes, _I_ know how to find the programs and run them from the
shell, but not everyone in my family is willing to do that!

Thanks!

[Bug 82853] Re: Add support for the smbk5pwd overlay

2012-06-19 Thread Georg Rath
The funny thing is that, far as I can tell, heimdal-dev already is a
build-dependency in the precise version of the package.
The only thing that needs to be done is to reenable the generation of the
slapd-smbk5pwd package.
The patch in #21 does just that. It also adds the heimdal-fix patch from the
debian repositories. I deployed the modified package on a test system and it
works without problems.

Thank you for reopening this bug and taking a look at the problem.

[Bug 1015041] Re: Conflict between NTP and NTPDATE

2012-06-19 Thread JoLa
After several restarts I thought that there must be another behavior
which causes the loop. I don't payed attention, that I had changed the
login to using password. In this case the loop exists. Without password
I had no loop with and without NTPDATE for several restarts.

But with the last restart I had a loop with login without password. I
deinstalled NTPDATE and had no loop after restart.

Strange behaviour. I give up as these things are to heavy for me.

Adding syslog as attachement where you can see the time leaks.

[Bug 1014916] Re: simultaneously started lucid containers pause while starting after the first seven

2012-06-19 Thread Serge Hallyn
@Gary,

I wasn't able to reproduce this on a m1.xlarge.

Regarding needing disk space, note that /dev/vdb1 should have a large
amount of disk. You can unmount /mnt, pvcreate /dev/xvdb; vgcreate lxc
/dev/xvdb; then use -B lvm as an additional lxc-create flag to create
an lvm-backed container. SNapshotted lvm containers can be created wit
lxc-clone -s -o p1 -n p2.

to have a concrete issue with an installed package to support the SRU.

[Bug 1011597] Re: [MIR] libfcgi-perl, libcgi-fast-perl

2012-06-19 Thread Jamie Strandboge
MIR Review for libfcgi-perl:
* builds with only main enabled with no compiler warnings or errors
* it has a small test script that is used in the build
* no Ubuntu delta
* has a watch file
* the package is up to date
* the package is lintian clean
* debian/rules is clean
* as mentioned, no bugs in LP or Debian

Security review for libfcgi-perl:
* This script provides a perl library so it doesn't ship any initscripts,
upstart jobs, dbus services, daemons or cron jobs. No setuid or fscap'd
programs are installed and there is no use of sudo.
* There was one CVE in a deprecated interface, but it was fixed in a timely
fashion with minimal effort.
* For its C code
 - it creates its own wrapper functions for malloc and string operations, and
these wrappers check return codes and ensure strings are nul terminated.
Spot-checking use of sprintf, it is quite careful to make sure strings are the
proper size, etc.
 - it uses strcpy() in a few places, but doesn't always verify the length of
the src. However, where this happen stack-protector should intervene. It also
looks like in these places on a very poorly written program would allow
attacker control to these functions without input sanitizing.
 - OS_SpawnChild() doesn't use umask(0) when spawning a child, but as this is a
library, it probably makes sense for callers of OS_SpawnChild() to do this.
 - it creates its own wrapper functions for read() and write().(OS_Read and
OS_Write respectively). While the wrappers themselves don't check return codes,
all usage of OS_Read() and OS_Write() do.

[Bug 1014916] Re: simultaneously started lucid containers pause while starting after the first seven

2012-06-19 Thread Serge Hallyn
Ok I've been able to reproduce this. I've tried with lvm snapshot
containers - those did NOT do this. I don't understand why, unless it's
simply the timing.

I used the following script:

cat notit.sh
#!/bin/bash

maclist=[]
i=0
for c in /var/lib/lxc/*/config; do
  mac=`grep lxc.network.hwaddr $c | awk -F= '{ print $2 }'`
  maclist[$i]=$mac
  i=$((i+1))
done

for j in `seq 0 $i`; do
 echo got macaddr ${maclist[j]}
done

for j in `seq 0 $i`; do
  tail -100 /var/log/syslog | grep -q ${maclist[j]}
  if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
echo ${maclist[j]} was not in syslog
  fi
done

to find a mac address of a container which didn't get an address,
(grepping for the mac addr in /var/lib/lxc/*/config), and attached to
such a console. ps -ef showed:

UIDPID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD

Note that udevadm monitor and settle are still running, and dhclient3 is
not yet running.

This is basically what I'd assumed since precise containers don't do this:
precise containers don't do udevadm trigger.

A workaround therefore will be to remove /etc/init/udevtrigger.conf from
the container.

Question remains exactly what is causing this - is there a rate limit in
the kernel or in user-space udev which makes this pause happen?

Actually simply disabling udevtrigger.conf doesn't work, because in
lucid eth0 won't then come up. You also need to change the start on
for /etc/init/networking.conf to

start on (local-filesystems)

Public bug reported:

it has been reported in maas (and i think i've seen it other places) that the
console may include:
init: cloud-init-nonet main process (307) killed by TERM signal

This message is scary to users, even though it is not fatal or even an
indication of a problem.

It occurs because the cloud-init-nonet's purpose in live is to block the
running of cloud-init until the network devices are up. when upstart
recognizes that 'static-network-up' it kills cloud-init-nonet, which
allows cloud-init to start.

[Bug 1015194] Re: package postfix 2.9.1-5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-06-19 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This looks like a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in
Ubuntu. As such, I'm marking this bug as Invalid.

Specifically, it looks like you have a problem with your
/etc/postfix/main.cf or aliases files.

You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

If you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
and then change the bug status back to New.

Thanks!

Serge, thank you! The workaround appears to work very well for us. The

starts but also seems to have taken at least three minutes off our
average run time, as you might expect.

[Bug 978907] Re: [SRU] capture-output fails in glance-control

2012-06-19 Thread Steve Langasek
The parameter --capture-output lets glance-control fail on some distributions
(eg openSUSE) that do not have a /usr/bin/logger (but rather /bin/logger).

There is no point in opening a bug against the Ubuntu package for an
issue that has no impact in Ubuntu. That is not the intent of the SRU
process.

[Bug 1015223] Re: cloud-init-nonet main process killed by TERM signal

2012-06-19 Thread Clint Byrum
I'm adding an upstart task. I'm wondering if its even valid for upstart
to log these at the default log priority. Perhaps they should be dropped
to 'info' level. Killing a process as part of stopping the job is a
perfectly normal situation and doesn't really seem to warrant logs. The
only time I think it might be useful is when debugging issues with boot
ordering, which would seem to be a good time to lower log priority to
info anyway.

[Bug 978356] Re: squid3 gets killed at startup with dnsmasq and no networkmanager

2012-06-19 Thread Clint Byrum
** Description changed:

+ [ Test case ]
+ This is difficult to test as it is a race condition, however there are
multiple users affected.
+
+ 1. install squid3 on a system which has a system level network connection
+ 2. reboot
+ 3. on bootup, check to see if squid3 is running (service squid3 status). If
it is not running, check /var/log/syslog and the system console for a message
about squid3 being killed by SIGHUP.
+ 4. Install updated package
+ 5. repeat step 3, If it is running, this *might* be fixed (but as it is a
race, there are no guarantees).
+
+ [ Regression Potential ]
+ This update only touches the upstart job, so it will only affect that.
Upstart's respawn code is fairly conservative, and the upstart job is fairly
straight forward. Definitely a few reboots with updates installed should prove
this update regression-free.
+

+
  I've 12.04 - 32bit pae, and removed networkmanager (aptitude purge) since I'm
using it as a LTSP server.
  squid3 3.1.19-1ubuntu1, dnsmasq 2.59-4

I install dnsmasq and squid3. I've noticed that squid3 was never working at
boot.
  dmesg shows a:
  root@gs1204:~# dmesg | grep squid
[ 20.227964] init: squid3 main process (1310) killed by HUP signal

If I remove dnsmasq (aptitude purge) squid has no problem. Don't know if is
related to the recent mechanism so resolv.conf is automatically updated by
dnsmasq or not.
At the moment I've setup the workaround of run squid3 from rc.local, but of
course is not a clean solution

[Bug 1015348] [NEW] openssh-server package does not start sshd on a live CD boot

2012-06-19 Thread Thomi Richards
Public bug reported:

When booting into a live CD image (either quantal or precise),
installing the openssh-server package does not start the ssh daemon. I
get the following output while installing the package:

Preconfiguring packages ...
Selecting previously unselected package openssh-server.
(Reading database ... 154905 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking openssh-server (from .../openssh-server_1%3a6.0p1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb)

Setting up openssh-server (1:6.0p1-1ubuntu1) ...

Creating SSH2 ECDSA key; this may take some time ...
initctl: Unknown job: ssh
start: Unknown job: ssh
Setting up ssh-import-id (2.12-0ubuntu1) ...

Trying to start it manually produces the same result:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo start ssh
start: Unknown job: ssh
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start
Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service ssh start
initctl: Unknown job: ssh

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start ssh

This seems to be an inotify issue - initctl isn't being notified of the
new configuration. If I run:

$ initctl reload-configuration

...then everything works as expected.
