[Bug 1087183] [NEW] MaaS cloud-init configuration specifies 'manage_etc_hosts: localhost'
Public bug reported: The default cloud-init configuration for MaaS uses 'manage_etc_hosts: localhost'; this causes a line such as: # Added by cloud-init 127.0.1.1 test-12.os.magners.qa.lexington test-12 To be added to /etc/hosts; this is problematic for a few reasons when using Juju with MaaS as: unit-get private-address returns 'test-12.os.magners.qa.lexington'; and if I then try to bind services or connect to services running locally using this hostname I get connected/bound to '127.0.1.1'. And then other services connecting to `hostname` using relation-get private-address (which resolves to the external IP address) can't actually connect to the service as its running on 127.0.0.1. This part of the configuration is coming from MaaS rather than Juju and it makes the maas provider for Juju function in a different way to other providers which I don't believe use this configuration option. [Bug 959037] Re: NM-controlled dnsmasq prevents other DNS servers from starting
I would if I considered it a bug. (I didn't fully describe the current state of samba4, because I figured it was irrelevant: You can alter the interfaces it binds to, but not for *only* the dns resolver -- so currently, if you want samba4 listening on the wildcard address you'll need the dns resolver listening there too.) It would be a nice feature, sure. But, it's nm-dnsmasq is the one breaking away from standards in ways that will break other packages, so I'm reporting the conflict here. Btw, named immediately notices because of the /etc/network/if-{up,down}.d/bind9 scripts that trigger rndc reconfig when an interface goes up or down. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dnsmasq in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/959037 Title: NM-controlled dnsmasq prevents other DNS servers from starting To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/djbdns/+bug/959037/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 959037] Re: NM-controlled dnsmasq prevents other DNS servers from starting
If libnss-nm-dns would make it easier to introduce per-user caching and/or if it improved security then those would be important benefits. [Bug 1086775] Re: bind9 uses high CPU after lucid-precise upgrade
There are two problems here. First is that the bind9.postinst fails to set permissions correctly in some circumstances, and second that without the permissions set correctly, you get 100% CPU usage. The 100% CPU usage problem is already in bug 1038199, so we can track that there. That leaves this bug to track the postinst /var/cache/bind permissions problem. ** Description changed: - Summary: bind9 uses very high CPU after an upgrade from Lucid to - Precise. I have traced this to a directory permissions problem as - /var/cache/bind is not writeable by the bind group after an upgrade, but - is writeable after a clean install. + Affects: 1:9.7.0.dfsg.P1-1ubuntu0.8, 1:9.8.1.dfsg.P1-4ubuntu0.4, 1:9.8.4 + .dfsg-1ubuntu1. - Ubuntu release: - root@dev1-kvm-cluster:~# lsb_release -rd - Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS - Release: 12.04 + bind9.postinst only sets permissions on + /var/cache/bind on a fresh install. [Bug 1087228] [NEW] /etc/network/if-down.d/bind9 doesn't work; should be /etc/network/if-post-down.d/bind9
Public bug reported: The bind9 package includes /etc/network/if-down.d/bind9 which does rndc reconfig. But this should only be done *after* the interface has been deconfigured not before. NetworkManager's /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown run-partses only /etc/network/if-up.d and /etc/network/if-post-down.d, so when an interface is deconfigured using NetworkManager the bind9 hook script doesn't get run at all; named does not notice that the interface has been deconfigured until its next poll (which happens every 60 minutes by default). Blueprint changed by Dave Walker: Whiteboard changed: + # FEEDBACK + Discussed with xnox, this is making good progress. + see also: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/bibisect User Stories: Colin is pinged about a horrible and nasty bug in the installer. After performing a binary bisection across the whole archive over the past month, he narrows it down to a small amount of uploads. After testing images with binaries from those uploads, the bug is pin-pointed and fixed. CD/cloud images are build from a snapshot, instead of having their own mirror. Risks: Wasted bandwidth / disk-space. Test Plans: Release Note: Session Notes: How to do this? - expensive on the public cloud - potentially a lot of storage (i386, amd64 ~ 1TB during quantal) - preserve signatures - Ideally we want daily granularity for the tradeoffs - as well as taking manual snapshots - useful for cdimage building (actually a local mirror is already doing this for ISOs) - this is pilot, test it for one cycle (due to resource constraints) - keep a month at a time. - dbg symbols is a use-case (well, it is currently stored in a separate archive with - backup to launchpadlibrarian (use a smart-proxy as a fallback to launchpadlibrarian) - useful for full archive binary bisect - avoiding cloud image and iso image skew Workitems: - use cases, costs, stake holders, solutions - how much data does it grow? - how is snapshot.debian.org is created? see also http://summit.ubuntu.com/uds-r/meeting/21105/bibisect/ -- Create Ubuntu Archive Snapshots swift-mirror https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/servercloud-r-swiftmirrorsnapshots -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1086646] Re: text/x-shellscript doesn't run if text/cloud-boothook present
Thanks for the info Scott. To to clarify, I under you can user hostname in a cloud-config, the problem I am solving is for autoscaling launch configuration and needing a common base hostname (for config management purposes and only for humans to identify) but unique amongst them. So the host name I am setting is: prd-myshinnyhostname-ap-southeast-1a-$RANDOM Which I can't see anyway to do in cloud-config unfortunately, otherwise I would stick to use that for this autoscale launch config. I am injecting into /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg to save having to have a cloud-config file at all. Just lazy maybe, but figured it works best with how I am setting the hostname (cloud-config hostname is useless for this use case) So back to the issue, I had the below. The boothook worked but the shell script didn't touch the file in /etc or the test file. (the work around I have for now is to just have a boothook, and the boothook injects into /etc/rc.local the shell script and then adds a line to clean up after it has run so as to have a one-time run of the shell script. Working well) I will try your user-data file and report back. Re: [Bug 1086646] Re: text/x-shellscript doesn't run if text/cloud-boothook present
#cloud-boothook #!/bin/bash if [ ! -f /etc/id ] then sed -i 's/preserve_hostname/preserve_hostname: True/g' /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg sed -i 's/apt_preserve_sources_list/apt_preserve_sources_list: True/g' /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg It seems to me that the sed editing here might be creating invalid yaml or at least confusing content in /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg, which would cause cloud-init to fail next time it loaded this file. Ie, i think you've now got: preserve_hostname: TrueORIGINAL_VALUE_HERE apt_preserve_sources_list: TrueORIGINAL_VALUE_HERE one thing that might make this easier, and would have the same affect, is just: echo preserve_hostname: True /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d/preserve-hostname.cfg echo apt_preserve_sources_list: True /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d/apt_preserve_sources_list -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to cloud-init in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1086646 Title: text/x-shellscript doesn't run if text/cloud-boothook present To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-init/+bug/1086646/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1086646] Re: text/x-shellscript doesn't run if text/cloud-boothook present
Yes actually I did fix that in a later boothook, but this is after I went with the all-in-one boothook (that injects into rc.local to run a shell script once network was up) I see. So messing with the cloud.cfg broke the system. My bad. Thanks for the time Scott and sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase. That info on making a preserve-hostname.cfg and apt_preserve_sources_list file is brilliant!! Exactly what I need. I didn't come across this in docos. Any links to this to what I have missed reading?
