[Bug 1003842] Re: dnsmasq sometimes fails to resolve private names in networks with non-equivalent nameservers

2013-02-07 Thread Thomas Hood
Earlier there was some dispute about what the RFCs say about multiple
nameservers.

I found the following RFC which does have something to say about these
issues.

http://www.zoneedit.com/doc/rfc/rfc2182.txt

Here are a couple of passages...

Request for Comments: 2182
Category: Best Current Practice

Selection and Operation of Secondary DNS Servers

Abstract

The Domain Name System requires that multiple servers exist for every
delegated domain (zone). This document discusses the selection of
secondary servers for DNS zones. Both the physical and topological
location of each server are material considerations when selecting
secondary servers. The number of servers appropriate for a zone is
also discussed, and some general secondary server maintenance issues
   considered.

[...]

With multiple servers, usually one server will be the primary server,
and others will be secondary servers. Note that while some unusual
configurations use multiple primary servers, that can result in data
   inconsistencies, and is not advisable.

The distinction between primary and secondary servers is relevant
only to the servers for the zone concerned, to the rest of the DNS
there are simply multiple servers. All are treated equally at first
instance, even by the parent server that delegates the zone.
Resolvers often measure the performance of the various servers,
choose the best, for some definition of best, and prefer that one
for most queries. That is automatic, and not considered here.

[Bug 1117815] Re: python-keystone 2012.1+stable~20120824-a16a0ab9-0ubuntu2.4 improperly pulled in patch from upstream

2013-02-07 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I am not seeing this:
$ dpkg -l|grep python-keystone
ii python-keystone 2012.1+stable~20120824-a16a0ab9-0ubuntu2.4
OpenStack identity service - Python library

$ grep max_param_size /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/keystone/config.py
register_int('max_param_size', default=64)

In testing I also tried authenticating the with no changes to
/etc/keystone/keystone.conf:
$ nova keypair-list
+---+-+
| Name | Fingerprint |
+---+-+
| mykey | ad:4f:2a:d2:c1:3f:8b:c0:e6:3f:de:cd:48:8d:fe:08 |
+---+-+

and also with using in the [DEFAULTS] section of /etc/keystone/keystone.conf
(and restarting keystone):
max_param_size = 4

$ nova keypair-list
ERROR: Request attribute username must be less than or equal to 4. The server
could not comply with the request because the attribute size is invalid (too
large). The client is assumed to be in error. (HTTP 400)

Can you provide the exact steps on how to reproduce along with your
/etc/keystone/keystone.conf (redacting any passwords or otherwise
sensitive information)?

[Bug 1081489] Re: autofs package is missing the lookup_sss.so module(!); negating autofs-enabled sssd functionality (automount fails)

2013-02-07 Thread Robie Basak
Ah, we have a catch. I apologise for not noticing this before.

I've verified that /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/sssd/modules/libsss_autofs.so is provided by sssd. So your patch
would require a new build dependency on sssd. However, sssd is in
universe, and autofs is in main, so we can't depend on it as this is not
permitted by policy (http://people.canonical.com/~cjwatson/ubuntu-
policy/policy.html/ch-archive.html#s-main).

The only solutions I'm aware of are to promote sssd to main or to demote
autofs to universe. The former is dependent on Canonical's agreement to
support it in main, and I'm not sure how the requirements weigh up in
this case (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuMainInclusionRequirements).

[Bug 942862] Re: lxc-create failure creating a lucid container in a precise host with old cache

2013-02-07 Thread Stéphane Graber
** Description changed:

- When running
- lxc-create -t ubuntu -n u1-server -f /etc/lxc/local.conf -- -r lucid -a
i386 -b matiasb
+ == Rationale ==
+ On apt failure, LXC simply fails without telling the user that they may have
an old cache and should just rebuild it.
+ This confuses some users who had some pretty old lucid cache on their system
with out of date apt lists.
+
+ The fix includes a better error message on failure and calls apt-get
+ update before trying to install anything.
+
+ == Test case ==
+ 1) Use a machine with a very old lucid cache (or manually break the apt lists)
+ 2) lxc-create -t ubuntu -n p1 -- --release lucid
+ 3) Check that it a) works or b) shows an error message telling you to wipe
the cache
+
+ == Regression potential ==
+ It's just an extra apt-get update and a better error message so I don't
expect any regression here. Worst case scenario, the user will just get the
error message and have to wipe the cache.

+
+ When running

[Bug 1113821] Re: libvirt-bin deletes /etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin on upgrade

2013-02-07 Thread Stéphane Graber
** Description changed:

- libvirt-bin deletes its own NON-obsolete conffile /etc/dnsmasq.d
- /libvirt-bin in its postrm with rm, but postrm runs on upgrade, so
- this causes libvirt-bin to delete its own conffile on upgrade. Hence,
- anything that relies on /etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin will break whenever
- upgrading libvirt-bin to a newer version.
+ == Rationale ==
+ Back in quantal we introduced a new /etc/dnsmasq.d/package.
+
+ That file is meant to avoid conflicts between the various dnsmasq
+ daemons and a main system wide dnsmasq (as provided by the dnsmasq
+ package).
+
+ Unfortunately the design of the /etc/dnsmasq.d/package logic had one flaw.
+ To allow restoring the original dnsmasq behaviour as quickly as possible, we
put the removal of that file in the remove target of the postrm, which means
that if removing and then reinstalling the package, the file would vanish.
+
+ The new implementation uses a separate /etc/dnsmasq.d-available
+ directory which contains standard conffiles (only removed on purge) and
+ we now have postinst and postrm hooks to create/remove symlinks from
+ /etc/dnsmasq.d-available/package to /etc/dnsmasq.d/package.
+
+ == Test case ==
+ 1) Install current version from the archive
+ 2) Remove it
+ 3) Install it again
+ 4) Confirm that the file in /etc/dnsmasq.d disappeared (that's the bug)
+ 5) dpkg --purge package
+ 6) Reinstall the current version from the archive
+ 7) Update to the version from -proposed
+ 8) Check that /etc/dnsmasq.d/package is now a symlink to
/etc/dnsmasq.d-available/package. You may also want to check with some extra
changes in the file prior to upgrade to confirm that it's being moved properly.
+
+ == Regression potential ==
+ It's not the simplest conffile handling code you can think of and it's
possible we missed something, though in testing, the solution appears reliable,
properly transitions any user made change and allows for the user to remove the
conffile if they wish.
+ If something goes completely wrong, the worst we can end up with is a missing
configuration (what we have currently anyway) or a configuration file where it
was previously removed by the user.
+ It's worth noting however that most of our users don't have the system wide
dnsmasq daemon installed and those who do, typically want that configuration
file anyway (or they'll get quite a mess at boot time), so I consider the risk
to be minimal here.
+
+
+ libvirt-bin deletes its own NON-obsolete conffile /etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin
in its postrm with rm, but postrm runs on upgrade, so this causes libvirt-bin
to delete its own conffile on upgrade. Hence, anything that relies on
/etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin will break whenever upgrading libvirt-bin to a newer
version.

  libvirt-bin probably should use dpkg-maintscript-helper rm_conffile.

  Repro steps:

  1) Install latest version of libvirt-bin. Observe that
/etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin is present.
  2) Purge libvirt-bin and install an old version. Observe that
/etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin is present.
  3) Upgrade libvirt-bit to latest version. Observe that
/etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin is gone.

  Expected:

/etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin should be present on disk after each step,
since it is shipped in both versions of the package.

  Actual:

/etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt-bin is gone after step 3.

[Bug 1045955] Re: lxc-create -t ubuntu-cloud broken on quantal images (no ubuntu user)

2013-02-07 Thread Stéphane Graber
** Changed in: lxc (Ubuntu Precise)
   Status: Triaged = In Progress

** Changed in: lxc (Ubuntu Precise)
Assignee: (unassigned) = Stéphane Graber (stgraber)

** Description changed:

+ === Rationale ===
+ The quantal cloud image doesn't ship with an existing ubuntu user, instead it
uses cloud-utils to create it at boot time.
+ This breaks older versions of lxc-ubuntucloud which expects the user to be
there.
+
+ The fix is a backport from what was pushed into quantal and basically
+ moves the user handling code to the cloud-init config file.
+
+ === Test case ===
+ 1) lxc-create -t ubuntucloud -n p1 -- -r q
+ 2) If this works, you're good (otherwise it'll fail when setting up the user
saying that ubuntu doesn't exist.)
+
+ === Regression potential ===
+ The fix is a direct port of the change that was pushed to quantal and it's
been tested on 12.04 with both a precise and quantal container. In the worst
case, cloud-init would fail to run, rendering the container close to useless,
but the testing I've been doing would have shown anything that bad.
+
+
+ -- original bug report
+
'lxc-create -t ubuntu-cloud' was broken on quantal images as it assumes
presense of 'ubuntu' user, and that has been removed from the images.
Now, cloud-init creates the ubuntu user on first boot.

[Bug 1118549] [NEW] postfix regression in raring: fails to pick up dynamic resolv.conf changes

2013-02-07 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

After upgrade to raring, postfix is failing to update
/var/spool/postfix/etc/resolv.conf on DNS server changes (via
resolvconf). Since postfix invariably starts before network-manager on
my system, this means postfix never knows the DNS server so can't
resolve any destinations for outbound mail. I had accumulated several
days worth of queued mail by the time I noticed this problem.

[Bug 1118549] Re: postfix regression in raring: fails to pick up dynamic resolv.conf changes

2013-02-07 Thread Steve Langasek
The cause of the failure in /etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/postfix is
here:

QUEUEDIR=$(/usr/sbin/postconf2 -h queue_directory 2/dev/null || true)

# /usr/sbin/postconf2 -h queue_directory 2/dev/null
# echo $?
127
#

This is because:

# /usr/sbin/postconf2 -h queue_directory
bash: /usr/sbin/postconf2: No such file or directory
#

So, I don't know why this is 'postconf2' instead of 'postconf', but it's
definitely broken.

However, I also see that the version of the script shipped in the
package does *not* show this bug; so maybe this is an invalid bug report
and my issue is caused by a local change when I was testing resolvconf
integration previously (i.e., to make sure a failing hook doesn't cause
resolvconf as a whole to fail). The file was last updated in May 2012,
which is quite a while ago.

I don't know why this is causing a behavior change on my system in
practice; probably something in raring has changed boot timing here and
postfix is now starting faster.

[Bug 1118705] [NEW] openvpn connection stalls

2013-02-07 Thread Robert Gierzinger
Public bug reported:

Distribution Used:Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS with all latest updates
Package: openvpn 2.2.1-8ubuntu1
Kernel: 3.2.0-36-generic #57 - 64bit

At first I dug into the docs of openvpn and tried various configurations with
different parameters for options fragment, tun-mtu, mssfix. Connections
via openvpn seemed to stall after a certain amount of data transmitted or time.
I discovered the issue a few seconds after establishing a remote desktop
connection session to a windows computer.
I found similar problems here: https://forums.openvpn.net/topic9401.html
However, even filetransfers via ssh to any of our linux servers behind the
firewall (which is also this openvpn end point) stalled after 5-15 MB. As
mentioned before even with different mtu sizes/fragments and from different
dial-in connections.

The server is an IBM x3550 m4 with standard components located in a
datacenter. eth0 is connected to the uplink, eth1+eth2 bundled as bond0
to a switch where the DMZ is. This server also has a openvpn connection
to our corporate headquarters: even without the bonding interface
involved (a bug there was my first guess) the connection stalled.
However, if I connected to the endpoint of the corporate headquarters
the problem did not occur - here we use up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04 but with
32 bit.

Openvpn option mtu-test just resulted in a strange log-message NOTE:
failed to empirically measure MTU (requires OpenVPN 1.5 or higher at
other end of connection). Logfiles also did not give any information.

Solution:
adding the snapshot repository from
https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/OpenvpnSoftwareRepos and installing
openvpn 2.3.0 resolved the issue.

Hello Alessandro, or anyone else affected,

Accepted cloud-init into quantal-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-
init/0.7.0-0ubuntu2.3 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in

2013-02-07 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Klaus, or anyone else affected,

Accepted qemu-kvm into quantal-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu-kvm/1.2.0
+noroms-0ubuntu2.12.10.3 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed

Thank you in
advance!

Looking in the source package, I see:

update-libc.d:QUEUEDIR=$(/usr/sbin/postconf -h queue_directory 2/dev/null ||
true)

I strongly suspect your theory about a local modification is correct.

[Bug 1037055] Re: winbind does not refresh kerberos tickets

2013-02-07 Thread styro
I'm also hit by what seems to be the same bug on 12.04. This happens on
both desktops and servers using winbind (pam_winbind) to manage kerberos
keytabs and ticket caches.

We are authenticating against an Active Directory domain controller (2008R2).
We use the winbind/kerberos combo for:
* logging into Ubuntu desktops,
* transparent SSH access (via GSSAPI) to other Ubuntu/Debian machines,
* single sign on for webapps running on both Linux and Windows servers,
* and authenticating access to file shares (both Samba and Windows)

We often find our kerberos credential caches disappearing. This stops
kerberos authentication working for eg SSH, HTTP(S), CIFS etc. Things
work very well otherwise.

Impact:
* If it happens on the client, the client can't authenticate to any kerberised
servers (Windows or Linux).
* If it happens on the server, all clients (Windows or Linux) are unable to
connect to that server any more.
* The main impact is very flaky network authentication on an LTS release that
we will have to live with for a few more years.

Workaround:
On the desktop run kinit to create a new ticket cache, or on a server restart
the winbind daemon after logging in with a local account. This usually needs to
be done once or twice a week on my desktop, but less frequently on servers.

Test case:
I don't have a good understanding on how to reliably reproduce it apart from
waiting several days for it to stop authenticating. But the earlier posters
above seem to have a better handle on that part.

I will commit to testing any proposed updates.

[Bug 1119145] [NEW] check_dhcp -s hostaddress doesn't work if dhcp-server answers with different next-server ip

2013-02-07 Thread abma
Public bug reported:

check_dhcp -s uses wrong ip-address if the dhcp-server answers with a
next-server ip set which is =! the dhcp server ip.

this bug seems to be fixed upstream, see
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailatid=397597aid=3503921group_id=29880

this currently makes check_dhcp -s ip unusable for us, without -s it works
fine (but is bad as it could get a response from a failed router for example)
