Re: [Bug 1180777] Re: Windows 7 VM freeze on Ubuntu 12.04 KVM

2013-07-24 Thread f3a97
Hi Serge,

I performed the experiment you suggested:

1) Connected with RDP client
2) Worked until it hanged
3) Successfully connected to the VM via virt-manager (RDP client still
freezed)
4) Verified that Windows is still connected to the network
5) Successfully pinged my host IP from within the VM (ping 192.168.122.1)

So it doesn't seem to be a network disconnect issue.

Can you think of anything else?

Thanks!

 Hi,

(You probably knkow this, but to explain my request, the RDP connection
goes over the VM's virtual network card to talk directly to the VM.
Provided you have only a single VM running, 'gvncviewer localhost:0' (or
the equivalent with ssh port forwarding if you can't run X on the host)
 talks to the kvm process.)

Could you please start the VM, run RDP until it hangs, then connect with
vnc and use the windows network admin commands to see what windows
thinks is going on? I.e. does it think it is still connected to a
network? If not, can you simply reconnect, or do you have to restart
the driver, or do you have to restart the VM altogether?

I'm pretty sure htis is a bug in the qemu nic emulation, but am not sure
 where to begin diagnosing.

 Title:
Windows 7 VM freeze on Ubuntu 12.04 KVM

Status in “qemu-kvm” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
   Hi,

I recently started using KVM over VirtualBox for my Office needs. I
setup a Windows 7 VM on KVM and started using it through remote
   desktop.

What happens is that, after some hours of usage, the remote desktop
connection freezes. I thought it was a remmina bug, as the it was
enough to kill and restart it to successfully connect again to the VM.

However, today I've switched to a different RDP client (2X Client
chromium app) and the freeze just happened again!

   Some information:
   - the host and the VM are completely idle when the freeze occurs
   - I've tried sniffing the network packets toward the RDP port during the
freeze and found that the client is sending packets but no packet is sent
 back

Could this be a KVM issue? How can I further debug this one (I expect
 the freeze to happen again...)?

[Bug 954620] Re: SSH StrictModes does not work correctly

2013-07-24 Thread Christian Kujau
@Frank: does your home belong to your own per-user group? If so,
StrictMode=yes might notice that and still allow login. In my case:

 christian@alice$ ls -ld $HOME
 drwx-- 24 christian christian 20480 Jul 23 03:44 /home/christian

= Now, setting $HOME to 0720 will still allow login with public keys.
But changing the ownership to e.g. :users makes StrictMode work.

Note that sshd_config defines StrictModes only as specifies whether
sshd(8) should check file modes and ownership of the user's files and
home directory before accepting login. - i.e. there's no mention what
exactly is checked. The source may be helpful on that.

[Bug 1199474] Re: rabbitmq fails to start unless /etc/hosts is set a specific way

2013-07-24 Thread Simon MacMullen
Please see what I said in that thread:

http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.networking.rabbitmq.general/18295

The assertion that the hostname needs to resolve to 127.0.0.1 via
/etc/hosts is untrue. The hostname needs to resolve to an IP address of
the machine, via DNS or /etc/hosts or whatever.

Note also that the OP in that thread eventually traced their problem to
a firewall.

[Bug 1029889] Re: LVM Based KVM VM taking 100% CPU on first start and hangs.

2013-07-24 Thread Lewdmole
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1012946 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1012946

Still not fixed... I have found a workaround which was working (bellow) but now
its not working anymore...
Same stuff like above in previous posts...

Someone spotted:
Please note that if you want to create a qunatal or precise guest, you need to
either add the option --addpkg=linux-image-generic or apply the patch from
http://markmail.org/threadhg747mkmnkpy4icc#query:+page:1+mid:7rxyi4wjo6vkssh7+state:results

because otherwise the build process will fail!!!

This KVM installation with VMBuilder is rotten somewhere deep in my opinion, it
has never worked properly.
This is a different machine (X86_64) a lots of memory and space...

PROCEDURE TO INSTALL AS LVM WHICH WAS WORKING BEFORE...
1.) Instal VM as file based with --addpkg=linux-image-generic
2.) Wait for the install to finish...
3.)
Afterwards, you can find an XML configuration file for the VM in
/etc/libvirt/qemu/
(= /etc/libvirt/qemu/vm4.xml):

root@host:~# ls -l /etc/libvirt/qemu/

This process will create VM image (qcow2) in /var/lib/libvirt/images/vm4
/ubuntu-kvm

root@host:~# cd /var/lib/libvirt/images/vm4/ubuntu-kvm

Now that we know the name of our image (tmp09XnBf.qcow2), we can convert
it as follows:

root@host:~# qemu-img convert tmp09XnBf.qcow2 -O raw /dev/virtualvg2/vm4

Afterwards you can delete the disk image:

root@host:~# rm -f tmp09XnBf.qcow2

Now we must modify the VM's configuration...

root@host:~# virsh edit vm4

... and change the following section...

-
[...]
disk type='file' device='disk'
  driver name='qemu' type='qcow2'/
  source file='/var/lib/libvirt/images/vm4/ubuntu-kvm/tmp09XnBf.qcow2'/
  target dev='hda' bus='ide'/
  address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' unit='0'/
/disk
[...]
-

... so that it looks as follows:

-
[...]
disk type='file' device='disk'
  driver name='qemu' type='raw'/
  source file='/dev/virtualvg2/vm4'/
  target dev='hda' bus='ide'/
  address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' unit='0'/
/disk
[...]
-

Now we activate the VM:

root@host:~# virsh --connect qemu:///system
virsh # define /etc/libvirt/qemu/vm4.xml
virsh # start vm4
Making VM survive host reboot
virsh # autostart vm4

Result now not working taking 100% cpu and hangs!

[Bug 1204459] [NEW] Please package drbd tools v8.4 for use with Precice LTS Enablement Stacks

2013-07-24 Thread Numérigraphe
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04.3 is due in august and, as part of the LTS Enablement Stack
program, it will ship with Raring's kernel 3.8
This new kernel includes DRBD v8.4.2, but the DRBD utils shipped in Precise are
version 8.3.11. They will not work with the new kernel: please check Bug
#1132302 for the expected symptoms.

Would you please upload a package for DRBD utils v8.4.x for use with the
backported kernel ?
The tools v8.3 must remain available too, so the new package should named
something else, maybe drbd8-utils-lts-raring .

If this cannot be done in time for 12.04.3 (or not at all), I suggest it
should be clearly stated in the release notes that DRBD users using the
12.04.3 CD/DVD should revert to the Quantal LTS Enablement Stack. The
Quantal kernel has DRBD 8.3.13 which should work fine with the current
utils.

  Some information:
  - the host and the VM are completely idle when the freeze occurs
  - I've tried sniffing the network packets toward the RDP port during the
freeze and found that the client is sending packets but no packet is sent back

-
- Could this be a KVM issue? How can I further debug this one (I expect the

2013-07-24 Thread Serge Hallyn
Quoting f3a97 (1180...@bugs.launchpad.net):

Thanks! So just to be sure, after this did you check whether the RDP
client worked again? If not, were you able to re-connect with a new
RDP client? If so, then can you also re-connect with a new RDP client
without first connecting via VNC and pinging the host from the guest?
(This should tell us whether the problem is the RDP server in windows,
or the network connection at some layer going stale until we ping).

[Bug 1204530] [NEW] yppasswd results in a segmentation fault when run on clients or server

This setup worked fine with the 12.04 LTS release. I've purged package nis a
number of times and reinstalled and still get the same behavior. I've also
removed a slave server from the network and reconfigured nis and still get the
same behavior.

I thought about listing this as a security vulnerability since the users
cannot change their passwords.

Re: [Bug 1172467] Re: Dnsmasq caches negative results if it starts before the network is up

On 08/07/13 15:02, Thomas Hood wrote:

I'm confused: dnsmasq won't cache a negative answer if it has no
upstream servers. To cache a negative answer it has to _receive_ a
negative answer (and the negative answer has to have certain
information, notably an SOA record to determine the TTL for the negative
answer.

Whatever is going on, it's more complex. Maybe the problem is that
dnsmasq gets a negative answer from some upstream server, and then gets
a new upstream server which has the correct information? The solution
then is --clear-on-reload but I think NM sets that?

Cheers,

Simon.

Re: [Bug 1172467] Re: Dnsmasq caches negative results if it starts before the network is up

2013-07-24 Thread Simon Kelley
Whatever is going on, it's more complex. Maybe the problem is that
dnsmasq gets a negative answer from some upstream server, and then
gets a new upstream server which has the correct information? The
solution then is --clear-on-reload but I think NM sets that?

but --clear-on-reload doesn't appear to do anything when the
upstream nameservers are set via DBus, maybe that's the underlying problem.

Simon.

[Bug 592434] Re: ssh -X user@machine hangs when using exit to terminate

2013-07-24 Thread Bryan Quigley
This is really a dbus issue, not a SSH issue:
see
http://serverfault.com/questions/405518/how-to-configure-d-bus-and-ssh-x-forwarding-to-prevent-ssh-from-hanging-on-exit

Gedit for whatever reason is looking for an active dbus-session and
running `dbus-launch --autostart' if none was found. But `dbus-launch
--autostart' doesn't watch the user session and therefore ssh hangs
while waiting dbus-launch to quit.

A workaround is to run 'dbus-launch --exit-with-session' when you first
connect over SSH. (This unfortunately causes yet another issue:

[Bug 1204616] [NEW] AppArmor profile libvirt is incomplete

2013-07-24 Thread Wido den Hollander
Public bug reported:

I'm using the Ubuntu Cloud Archive and I'm encountering a incomplete
libvirt AppArmor profile.

My libvirtd.log is showing lines like this:

2013-07-24 13:41:35.254+: 2995: warning : virAuditSend:135 : Failed
to send audit message virt=kvm op=start reason=booted vm=r-1163-VM
uuid=1060bdc3-d77a-35f3-a8ef-696c0aef0b42 vm-pid=5121: Operation not
permitted

This is due to audit_write missing as a capability in the AppArmor
profile for libvirtd.

The simple fix is to add this line:

capability audit_write

In /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.libvirtd

This is with libvirt 1.0.6 from the Havana repository.

[Bug 1172467] Re: Dnsmasq caches negative results if it starts before the network is up

2013-07-24 Thread Thomas Hood
Hi Simon,

I think we've established that the submitter is having a problem with
dnsmasq server, not with NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq. So it would
be interesting to know if clear-on-reload fixes the submitter's problem.
(He already said that no-negcache fixes it.)

That clear-on-reload is ignored in the D-Bus case sounds like a distinct
issue.

What about Stéphane's suggestion that dnsmasq treats failure to find a
name in /etc/hosts as a NXDOMAIN?

[Bug 1202839] Re: qemu-bridge-helper missing from qemu-kvm or elsewhere

2013-07-24 Thread Serge Hallyn
Note that in quantal that file is shipped without CAP_NET_ADMIN and not
suid-root. Therefore it was useless to its intended purpose there.

The point of that file is to allow unprivileged users to create tap
devices for their VMs. You can create tap devices yourself for that
purpose easily, or use libvirt to do it for you.

Shipping this file and a bridge.conf configuration file isn't out of the
question, but would need to be vetted by the security team.
