Hello,

I would suggest a few modifications :

1) lockfile="/var/run/$progdir/$NAME.pid"
 Should point to /run as /var/run is a symbolic link

2) Your mount statement should terminate by : || true as in

mount -t configfs none /sys/kernel/config > /dev/null 2>&1 || true

If the mount fails for any reason the fact that the shell runs as -e
will make the complete command fails badly.

3) The upstream has a systemd service ; shouldn't it be used instead of
relying on the obsolete sysinit script ? While I understand that this is
intended to be SRUed, the proper service should be used on Xenial
anyhow.

pitti also commented that the script (if used) should go in /usr/lib
/modules-load.d/ but that would not be required if we go with the
systemd service.

to be a different issue as well with apport hooks.

I need you to include the output of the following command, please, as
either a comment on your bug or as an attachment:

systemctl -l nginx.service status


This will likely contain additional information, because it failed to
start after configuring the package, which suggests something else is at
play, and the error message was not obtained here.

Installed a system with Debian testing and the crash does not happen
there. That left two things: the additional security fixes we got or the
kernel. And it was not the security fixes... Should have tried a
different kernel sooner. Neither an old 4.2 based one nor the pending
4.4 are causing this. Only the current 4.3 based one. Maybe some Xen
related stable patches did get mis-applied or not applied at all. Who
knows. Will concentrate on the coming 4.4 and if I am happy, close this
report.

Hint from upstream. Sounds plausible that this might be the upstream
fix:

9c17d96500f78 "xen/gntdev: Grant maps should not be subject to NUMA
balancing"

I guess 4.3 started to be more aggressive there since I never saw this
before 4.3 and there even on a non-NUMA system. But having a grant-table
mapping taken away from the dom0 kernel without xenstored being involved
would explain it tripping over that now bad pointer.

The only place known to me that does that is /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh,
which is from util-linux. Something similar is also done under upstart
from /etc/init/hwclock.conf where hwclock is called with --systz. This
quite plausibly opens rtc as well.

However, these two scripts aren't being run at all any more under
systemd -- there it would be timedated which accesses /dev/rtc, but I
don't see how this is being activated that early (it usually doesn't run
at boot at all).

Can you please confirm whether this happens under upstart or systemd? In
the latter case, can you please do

   sudo journalctl -b > /tmp/journal.txt

and attach /tmp/journal.txt here? Thanks!

/running-in-container. This is just a (currently over-complicated)
wrapper around "systemd-detect-virt --container". That works under any
init system and is what upstreams and some packages already use, so
let's cut out that delta.

I hit this by simply deploying the haproxy charm on trusty.  Openstack
was not really involved in what I was testing.  I then recognized the

@Sinix, your modification to the init script are probably at fault since
they are not doing proper checking/error handling and the script is
configured to abort on the first error (!/bin/sh -e).
