[Bug 1347147] Re: krb5 database propagation enters infinite loop
I’ve written a test case that clearly demonstrates the GCC 4.8 bug responsible for the kadmin.local failure: $ gcc-4.8 -Wall -O2 bug.c -o bug $ ./bug $ echo $? 1 $ gcc-4.9 -Wall -O2 bug.c -o bug $ ./bug $ echo $? 0 A git bisection of the GCC source shows that this bug disappeared in https://gcc.gnu.org/r202525. [Bug 670250] Re: upgrade to latest stable version 2.0.6
It would be great with a Dovecot2 package like the one Holger Mauermann made. Thomasz Sterna also made some Dovecot 2 packages for Lucid LTS including the antispam plug-in: http://tomasz.sterna.tv/2010/11/dovecot-2-0-6-for- ubuntu-lucid/ . Thomasz Sternas packages are also referenced to at the bottom of the Ubuntu section of http://wiki2.dovecot.org/PrebuiltBinaries#Ubuntu . Also Carsten Uppenbrink has made some Dovecot 2 packages https://launchpad.net/~carsten-uppenbrink-net/+archive/dovecot2 , but it is stated on the page “Don't use!!” Perhaps Carsten Uppenbrink, Thomasz Sterna and Holger Mauermann have some experiences that could be merged into an official Ubuntu Dovecot2 package (with the antispam plug-in to e.g. support Dspam folder filtering.) Dspam with the antispam plug-in seems to have some advantages over spamassassin since it is easier for the user to manage. The antispam plug-in for dovecot 2 makes it easy to indicate what is spam and what is not simply by moving the messages to or away from a spam folder. The user does also not have to think about threshold or kill levels for spam like in spamassassin. It is claimed that Dspam should be quicker than spamassassin and use less resources. I have been setting up a local system with Dovecot 1.2.9, but when it came to finding some antispam solution I stumbled upon dspam on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix/Dspam which made me curious. After that I read about the Dovecot antispam plug-in which for me in combination with Dspam seems to be the closest solution to a user-friendly antispam solution. The reason for going with Dovecot 2 is because the antispam plug-in has corrected some bugs - see below in the links section. But also if going Dovecot 2 now could save some trouble instead of later on (by converting a running Dovecot 1 system to Dovecot 2) has made me think going straight to Dovecot 2 before rolling out this new local mail system. For people with interest in Dspam and the Dovecot antispam plug-in follows here some links. [Bug 618715] [NEW] ldapsearch ignores TLS_CACERT from /etc/ldap/ldap.conf but gladly reads ~/.ldapcert.pem
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ldap-utils I have setup an OpenLDAP server with TLS support using the guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html. When I tried to do an ldapsearch over ldaps:// or using start-tls (-Z) it would refuse and give the error message TLS: peer cert untrusted or revoked (0x42). That message is given because the CA certificate is not read and thus the server certificate can not be verified. I made sure that TLS_CACERT was specified correctly in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf, but that made no difference. According to strace the CA certificate file was not even read. It did however try to read ~/.ldapcert.pem, and when I copied the CA certificate file to that path, it worked. I seems that the ldap- utilities ignore part of ldap.conf. In maverick, now that the winbind package configures a PAM module by default (bug 282751), this is more serious than just starting a useless daemon. [Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off
Yes, it's installed when you install samba, I should have specified I meant by default when installing samba, sorry about that. I've looked around for a good while now trying to find out what hashes and encryption samba uses on it's files. I assumed it would have to use whatever hash the protocol uses, and it looks like I guessed right. Looking around for specifications on whats stored in the password database I find this in samba's documentation: user account information such as username, LM/NT password hashes, password change times, and account flags So that's LanMan and MD4 hash'es. LanMan is known for being easy to crack (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LM_hash ). My /etc/secrets are hashed to sha512 because it's too easy to break md5. I REALLY don't want my password automatically put in more databases by default in any package. -- libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/609092 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off
Looking into this more, without client lanman auth = yes samba will use ntlm by default. That's still not a hash comparable to sha512. So my argument stands. [Bug 609092] [NEW] libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba Samba defaults to unix password sync off, but this package is installed by default, and ignores that setting and sync's on it's own initiative. I see NO reason why this should be installed by default. Instead there could be a comment in the default smb.conf shipped, that says instead of using unix password sync consider package X. I strongly suspect there's a security consern aswell here, I REALLY don't want my password auto sync'ed to multiple places by default. I have sha512 encryption on /etc/shadow for a reason. I haven't had a user enabled in samba for ages, because it kept resetting the password. To find the solution I looked in samba logs, and samba configuration files, and found nothing to explain this behavior. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xinetd The package for xinetd on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server does not come with IPv6 enabled in the compile options, thus resulting in a package without proper IPv6 support. It is possible to fix this by adding a single line to the CFLAGS in the debian/rules-file and do a re-compile; --with-inet6 (possibly with an trailing \ if added before --with-libwrap). I'd very much like to see this fixed even though it's not much of an problem it's so easy to support IPv6 in xinetd it should not be left out. What’s wrong with ‘uname -m’? (Is this somehow related to allowing builds on a buildd?) But in any event, why can’t /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst do the architecture detection itself? I assume his complaint is that you hard code a map {amd64 → x86_64, lpia → i686, i386 → i686} that is neither complete nor obviously correct, and if this map ever _does_ need to change, that will currently require shipping more updates to every package that uses dkms. [Bug 317564] Re: Upgrade to Subversion 1.6.x for Karmic
I asked the Debian maintainer in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=531366 why 1.6.x hasn’t moved out of Debian experimental yet, and got a detailed response. The three issues he mentioned look relatively minor, and the second isn’t an issue for Ubuntu (we already disable serf because it’s in universe), but we should be aware of them and of the fact that 1.6.x in experimental might not get updates as frequently as 1.5.x in unstable would. I think we should still get 1.6.x into Karmic; there is plenty of time to work out any remaining issues. But if we want to stay with 1.5.x for now, we should at least merge 1.5.6 from testing/unstable (debdiff in bug 382002). -- Upgrade to Subversion 1.6.x for Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317564 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is a direct subscriber. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 371765] Re: Please merge krb5 1.7dfsg~beta1-3 (main) from Debian unstable (main)
It may still be better to upload 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-13 or -13ubuntu1 before moving ahead with 1.7, even if we’re dropping likewise-open for now. All krb5 rdeps in Ubuntu currently depend on libkrb53. 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-7 and -8 turn libkrb53 into a transitional package that depends on the new names for the krb5 libraries (libkrb5-3, libk5crypto3, etc.). 1.7 drops the libkrb53 transitional package. So if we were to upload krb5 1.7 immediately, we would break all those rdeps until they are rebuilt (as mentioned in the changelog for 1.7dfsg~beta1-2). If we instead upload 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-13 or -13ubuntu1, and rebuild all the krb5 rdeps against that, we will then be able to sync or merge 1.7 without breaking anything. -- Please merge krb5 1.7dfsg~beta1-3 (main) from Debian unstable (main) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to krb5 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Mathias, as Evan pointed out in the original description, it is critical to pick up the major changes in Debian releases 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-7 and -8 (dropping krb4) early in the Ubuntu release cycle. [Bug 305901] Re: Intrepid gcc -O2 breaks string appending with sprintf(), due to fortify source patch
** Also affects: 4g8 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: gcc-4.3 In Hardy and previous releases, one could use statements such as sprintf(buf, %s %s%d, buf, foo, bar); to append formatted text to a buffer buf. Intrepid’s gcc-4.3, which has fortify source turned on by default when compiling with -O2, breaks this pattern. This introduced mysterious bugs into an application I was compiling (the BarnOwl IM client). Test case: gcc -O2 sprintf-test.c -o sprintf-test http://web.mit.edu/andersk/Public/sprintf-test.c: #include stdio.h char buf[80] = not ; int main() { sprintf(buf, %sfail, buf); puts(buf); return 0; } This outputs not fail in Hardy, and fail in Intrepid. The assembly output shows that the bug has been introduced by replacing the sprintf(buf, %sfail, buf) call with __sprintf_chk(buf, 1, 80, %sfail, buf). A workaround is to disable fortify source (gcc -U_FORTIFY_SOURCE). One might argue that this usage of sprintf() is questionable. I had been under the impression that it is valid, and found many web pages that agree with me, though I was not able to find an authoritative statement either way citing the C specification. I decided to investigate how common this pattern is in real source code. You can search a source file for instances of it with this regex: - perl -ne 'print if m/sprintf\s*\(\s*([^,]*)\s*,\s*%s[^]*\s*,\s*\1\s*,/' + pcregrep -M 'sprintf\s*\(\s*([^,]*)\s*,\s*%s[^]*\s*,\s*\1\s*,' To determine how common the pattern is, I wrote a script to track down instances using Google Code Search, and found 2888 matches: http://web.mit.edu/andersk/Public/sprintf-results (For the curious: the script uses a variant of the regex above. I had to use a binary search to emulate backreferences, which aren’t supported by Code Search, so the script makes 46188 queries and takes a rather long time to run. The source is available at http://web.mit.edu/andersk/Public/sprintf-codesearch.py.) My conclusion is that, whether or not this pattern is technically allowed by the C specification, it is common enough that the compiler should be fixed, if that is at all possible. ** Also affects: abiword (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Intrepid gcc -O2 breaks string appending with sprintf(), due to fortify source patch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305901 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nagios-plugins in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 305901] Re: Intrepid gcc -O2 breaks string appending with sprintf(), due to fortify source patch
pcregrep -M 'sprintf\s*\(\s*([^,]*)\s*,\s*%s[^]*\s*,\s*\1\s*,' the regexp doesn't search for snprintf, and doesn't look for functions spanning more than one line. It does with pcregrep -M. For example, $ pcregrep -M 'sprintf\s*\(\s*([^,]*)\s*,\s*%s[^]*\s*,\s*\1\s*,' \ linux-2.6/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/intel_cacheinfo.c ret += sprintf(buf, %sEntry: %d\n, buf, i); ret += sprintf(buf, %sReads: %s\tNew Entries: %s\n, buf, ret += sprintf(buf, %sSubCache: %x\tIndex: %x\n, buf, (reg 0x3) 16, reg 0xfff); However, it appears that the multiline results did not show up in Kees’ reports, so the reports should be rerun with pcregrep -M if that is possible. -- Intrepid gcc -O2 breaks string appending with sprintf(), due to fortify source patch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305901 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nagios-plugins in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I am still interested in a more logical standard installation, according to the proposals I have mentioned before, but I do not have the time or knowledge to implement a patch for the startup script.
