I went through the 'upgrade' process to v11.04, rather than a 'fresh install'.
Do you think a disk format and a new install from CD might resolve my issue?
.or should I try to persevere (and trouble you in the process?)

Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
For some reason, your system does not have sed installed. This is
worrisome because it is a dependency of lsb-base, which itself is
'required', meaning you absolutely should have it.
Could you please try 'apt-get install sed lsb-base', and let us know (a)
if that works and (b) if, after that, you are able to install samba-
common?
