[Bug 436041] Re: Access Denied but TSC confirms it should not be.
OK - but log.smbclient is 618.8 Mb.I have grep-ed it down to show that there is no match in the log for the file names that were not backed up. The upload includes the 200 lines preceding the occurrence of each file that was backed up from the directory in question. If 200 isn't enough I can easily extend it. Notes about the files in the tgz: pdrive-backup shows what most of the other files are (They all accumulate history - you are probably only interested in the tail ends of these) extractor is run to cut the log.smbclient down to size, and makes extracts. -- Access Denied but TSC confirms it should not be. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/436041 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Oops - I had forgotten there are two threads. The last upload belongs with 437944 - I have posted it there as well so this one can be deleted. I will run the backup with the same log level tomorrow (Friday) assuming I remember... but it really will be really big - there are a lot of files in the backup. [Bug 437944] Re: Samba session request failure when using IP address
Sorry - I don't know. This is a new backup protocol following two bad experiences with tape mechanisms, so I have only been doing it for a couple of months, and only on this version. If there is still a gutsy box around at work I will try the test script on that next week. [Bug 437944] Re: Samba session request failure when using IP address
Chuck - see the upload. The test script (called test) first uses the netbios name redirecting its output to the file ntserver3, then uses the IP address redirecting its output to file IP91.249. I ran it three times. The netbios calls all worked as I would expect, and as you can see on the file ntserver3. All three of the IP calls showed the same "access denied" error - see IP91.249. FYI and to help you to assess things, I also have a record of an isolated failed overnight backup. The problem with that sort of event is its unrepeatability, so it is not really suitable bugfix fodder. But interestingly (IMHO) the unrepeatable backup failure also included error messages similar to the access denied messages on the IP smbclient output; the very much longer path and file name "session request to" field was progressively curtailed over several successive reports. So within this reproducible issue are processes that were also present in my unrepeatable backup failure. If you wish to follow up on the backup failure I will go over the records and get more detail for you. [Bug 436041] Re: Access Denied but TSC confirms it should not be.
Backup still showing the same problem of Access Denied. There is nothing in /var/log/samba. Smb.conf log level says it is for logging samba server errors, and I'm only using the client. Have I been looking at the wrong config file (I can't see one for smbclient) or is there a log file elsewhere I should be looking for. [Bug 436041] Re: Access Denied but TSC confirms it should not be.
Sorry for the delay - day job intruded. The server event log has nothing near the time in question, and nothing I can relate to Access Denied. No problem with /dev/sda size - except my geriatric amnesia. To avoid red herrings, my /etc/hosts file did not have the server name; name resolution must have been used. Debug level 3 set in client smb.conf but nothing found in /var/log/samba. I have restarted the client (sadly following an Ubuntu update that included a Samba security fix) and will recheck the backup and system logs when I go back in.
[Bug 436041] Re: Access Denied but TSC confirms it should not be.
Assuming 'this' is the Access Denied issue... I will check the server event log in the morning. The backup concerned is multi-gigabyte and takes nearly five hours. Needless to say it runs overnight. I will run it tomorrow with debug level 3 assuming my aged memory cells remember after work tomorrow. I don't know from memory how many thousand files are involved, and the problem is on the W folders at the back end of the alphabet. If you have any suggestion about how big the level 3 log is per 1000 files it might help me to make sure there is enough disk space on the client. I might need to relocate the log file away from the crowded 20Gb system drive onto the large backup drive. But I'll try anyway if you can't get back. [Bug 437944] [NEW] Samba session request failure when using IP address
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba smbclient -L consistently throws session request errors when addressing a Windows2003 server by its IP address. (spawned from Ubuntu bug - see https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/436041 and attached screenshot for serve details) To check consistency I ran a test script three times. The script first uses the server name, then its IP address. The script with console output appended, and the two redirected output files are attached. ** Affects: samba (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Samba session request failure when using IP address https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/437944 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 436041] Re: Access Denied but TSC confirms it should not be.
The smbclient -L test consistently gives an error message when addressing my server by its IP address. I will open this as a separate bug. To avoid red herrings, my /etc/hosts file did not have an entry for the server. [Bug 436041] Re: Access Denied but TSC confirms it should not be.
I routinely use its IP address when accessing this server from my Ubuntu box. Windows, of course, uses DNS or netbios name resolution. I ran the smbclient -L test twice - once in each mode. I did this in a few spare moments at work, and have only just looked in detail at the results. The two results are interestingly different. If my memory cells hold out until Monday, I will run the test again to see whether the error messages on the IP-access try are repeatable, or whether they are the kind of ephemera that make bug-hunting difficult. Details are in the attachment. Sorry - I can't say at this distance. The process was a bit stressful, it is several months ago, and the only reliable information is the notes I made at the time, all of which are above. My initial post says it all, really. Sorry I can't add to it. When asked which config to use, I took the (on screen?) option to look at the differences, then made a bit of a mess of going back to the select screen and got told there was a problem. >From general life experience - no special reference to this episode - I might have double-clicked the Back button, thereby inadvertently clicking something in the same place on the next screen, or maybe it just didn't 'Go Back' properly.
