Same bluescreen again on day 9 after the kernel upgrade.

So upgrading Kernel from 3.13 to 3.16 did not help.

Still looking for a fix.

Re: [Bug 990388] Re: acces denied samba printer shares after upgrade precise

2012-06-25 Thread Fred Müller
Hallo,

Am 25.06.2012 14:46, schrieb Robie Basak:
Could affected users who haven't already reported please report whether
the workaround of adding use client driver = no works for you, or if
 it fails for you?

Was

.

Assuming that use client driver = yes fixes the problem, it seems to
me that this is a question about how the Windows printer driver concept
 works with samba.

If we don't want to ever install Windows printer drivers into samba,
then it would make sense for Ubuntu to enable use client driver = yes
by default. If we do want to be able to install Windows printer drivers
into samba, then we must have use client driver = no (the default) in
 smb.conf by default.

If my understanding is correct, then users can:
   1) Set use client driver = yes and install printer drivers locally on
 each Windows client manually.

Set use client driver = yes and the connection to printer is ok
(access ok). Set use client driver = no or entry not available in
smb.conf - error: access denied.

   2) Set disable spoolss = yes and downgrade samba's behaviour to older
printing protocols, which do not support server-side storage of Windows
 printer drivers.
   3) Install a Windows printer driver into samba for each printer for which
sharing is required, which is how printing works on Windows servers. This is
documented but is a bit involved to set up, but it does provide the cleanest
and most functional printing experience to Windows users.

Ich habe keine windows treiber installiert und dies auch zu keinem
Augenblick gewollt. die Treiber waren bereits eingerichtet (Linux
debian, ubuntu oneiric).

So what should the default be? The current packaging does provide
defaults to permit the beginnings of option 3, and changing the default
to option 1 would break this.

 ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided = Medium

Samba, .

Abfolge: Upgrade Oneiric - Precise - danach konnte über Samba nicht
mehr gedruckt werden. Problem access denied. Die
Konfigurationseinstellung use client driver = yes behebt das Problem.

Viele Grüße

[Blueprint servercloud-p-php54] PHP 5.4 for Ubuntu 12.04

2012-04-17 Thread Fred
Blueprint changed by Fred:

Whiteboard changed:
Status: This has been a hard, back and forth process, and I am not
entirely happy with the result, but I don't feel there was anything more
we could do. With Suhosin unavailable for 5.4.0, we have decided to ship
5.3.10 with the full protections of Suhosin and its known working state
rather than 5.4.0 without Suhosin. With beta2 all but released
(undergoing final testing) with 5.3.10, there isn't much more we can do.
Thanks to everyone who put their time and input into this. -Clint

There is a PPA with up-to-date version of PHP 5.4.0 for lucid - oneiric:
https://launchpad.net/~ondrej/+archive/php5 and people are already using
it. (I already had some user base).

- Work items:
- [ubuntu-server] In january, assess situation based on Debian status and
decide 5.4 or 5.3 then: DONE
- [clint-fewbar] maintain a merged 5.4 in a PPA ( ppa:clint-fewbar/php5 ) :
DONE
- [clint-fewbar] setup rebuilds for extensions that build-dep on php5-dev:
POSTPONED
- [ondrej] setup backport for lucid to allow wider PHP 5.4 testing before the
upgrade: DONE
-
  Question:
Does this require discussion or just rubber stamping? -- Daviey

  Answer:
It is not entirely clear whether 5.4.0 will be sufficiently similar to 5.3.x
to include in this release. The more conservative approach is just to ship
5.3.9 or 5.3.10 and leave 5.4.0 for 12.10, but the PHP community is interested
in weighing in on the issue and I'd also like to hear the security team's take
on the matter.

   * provide packages for both precise and lucid in the ppa (or
lucid-backports) so people can test before upgrade
   * provide rebuilt extensions against the new ABI

  Question:
With both PHP 5.4.0 final and Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 1 released today, is it
correct to assume that the chances of PHP 5.4 being shipped with Ubuntu 12.04
are basically non existant? -Clemens

[Bug 888662] Re: Web browsers should share the cache

2011-11-11 Thread Fred
Axel Beckert wrote:
It actually is a good _idea_, just not a very realistic one. :-(

Stallman once wanted to create a free software operating system.
Many would say that it is not a very realistic idea.

Many maybe would say the XDG standard was a good idea, but not a very realistic
one.
Now plenty of applications save under ~/.config/

If there is a will, there is a way.
For starters, browsers which share the same cache format could have their
directories symlinked.

Oh sorry, I just thought it was a really good idea.

Because I thought it was so dumb that all web browsers use cache and
they all fetch the same stuff, but store it in different places.

[Bug 734777] Re: cannot acquire state change lock problems

2011-03-15 Thread Fred van Zwieten
No, it's also with a WindowsXP client.

I do have some additional observations. When I do a force off when the
guest is running, it works (but is hardly diserable). Reboot works, Just
shutdown not. After shutdown, the guest is in a state that nothing
works, including forced off.

Is it possible to have a testing ppa available with the version that has
a supposed fix in it (afaik 0.8.3-5).

[Bug 734777] [NEW] cannot acquire state change lock problems

2011-03-14 Thread Fred van Zwieten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libvirt-bin

When I shutdown a guest (tried with both WinXP and RHEL6, tried with
shutdown from virsh and virtmanager and from within guest), at the
point the client has shutdown (Halting System... in RHEL6 terms) the
state keeps being running. Also, the guest processes are still there,
but I can't kill them. Then, whatever I try to do with those guests, I
must wait for minimal 1 minute after I get Timed out during operation:
cannot acquire state change lock.

The traceback of a destroy attempt is this:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/engine.py, line 768, in
destroy_domain
vm.destroy()
File /usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/domain.py, line 1324, in destroy
self._backend.destroy()
File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/libvirt.py, line 349, in destroy
if ret == -1: raise libvirtError ('virDomainDestroy() failed', dom=self)
libvirtError: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock

Restarting the libvirt-bin service doesn't help.

Other seem to have similar problems: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=602715

Only thing that works reliably is to reboot the host.

[Bug 645082] Re: bacula misses requirement of gawk

2010-09-23 Thread Fred Baumgarten
Is the fix really that simple ?

Actually make_catalog_backup_awk holds the first line:

#!/usr/bin/gawk -f

which is obviously correct. Durung the bacula call mawk got involved (it
was a server installation). I guess the callee does a command like awk
-f /etc/bacula/scripts/make_catalog_backup_awk which is even wrong if
mawk has precendence over gawk by using /etc/alternatives/awk. I guess
you need to inspect a bit deeper.

ah yes - i just took a look at bacula-dir.conf in /etc/bacula, there it
is:

RunBeforeJob = /usr/bin/awk -f
/etc/bacula/scripts/make_catalog_backup_awk -v cat1=MyCatalog
/etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf

there the /usr/bin/awk needs to be changed to /usr/bin/gawk as well.

greetings,
Fred

[Bug 645082] Re: bacula misses requirement of gawk

2010-09-23 Thread Fred Baumgarten
Hi Serge !

I am pretty sure it matters. If gawk and mawk are installed the same
time, the user has to decide what awk is the default. If he uses mawk as
default via /etc/alternatives, /usr/bin/awk points to
/etc/alternatives/awk which points to /usr/bin/mawk. If bacula depends
on gawk (as quoted in the first line of
/etc/bacula/scripts/make_catalog_backup_awk), RunBeforeJob =
/usr/bin/awk -f /etc/bacula/scripts/make_catalog_backup_awk -v
cat1=MyCatalog /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf will fail, because the
statement in line number 1 is not read.

either way is possible:

RunBeforeJob = /usr/bin/gawk -f
/etc/bacula/scripts/make_catalog_backup_awk -v cat1=MyCatalog
/etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf

which will use the correct awk, or

RunBeforeJob = /etc/bacula/scripts/make_catalog_backup_awk -v
cat1=MyCatalog /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf

which will use the first line in the script to find the correct awk but
requires the executable bit set which is not the case right now.
Therefore the right fix would be adding the g in solution number 1.

Thanks for your work,

Fred

[Bug 520386] Re: libvirt-bin hypervisor does not support virConnectNumOfInterfaces / unable to create domain with virt-manager using network bridge

2010-06-16 Thread fred
i went through the hassle of compiling:

virt-manager 0.8.4
virtinst 0.500.3
virt-viewer 0.2.0
libvirt 0.8.1

myself on ubuntu lucid.

I can confirm that the bug is kinda fixed in upsteam (you can at least
specify your bridge manually (by name)) and create new vm's that way

please fix this in the repos in some way or another

[Bug 489418] Re: Strange behavior of libkrb5 since karmic ...

2009-11-29 Thread Fred
Hello, again... Looks like this problem has already been fixed in the
MIT krb5 developpement tree. The way they did it is more clean than mine
:)

So using my patch is only a workaround until Debian rebuild their
package against a newer krb5 release.

[Bug 489418] [NEW] Strange behavior of libkrb5 since karmic ...

2009-11-27 Thread Fred
Public bug reported:

Since karmic libkrb5 is acting weird. When a user fail to give a valid
password, it loops until account is locked ... After some wireshark
capture and some comparaison between 1.6 (from Jaunty) et the 1.7 of
Karmic i succeded to make a patch which solve the problem...

In 1.7 while the client get KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED or
KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIRED from the server it loops until it gets another
message (in our case it's KDC_ACCOUNT_LOCKED or something...)

In 1.6 it loops only if it receive KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIRED which is
quite normal...

I'm tired ;) it's 1am here if you need more info just ask here. patch +
pcaps in attachement

Btw, there is no problem without our configuration since it's the same
we were used to use in jaunty and it was generated by pam-auth-config
tool :)

[Bug 401107] Re: Software runs as root

2009-07-20 Thread Fred
If that is the only way, then the software is bad, and needs to be fixed
or replaced.

I do not want an insecure system and potentially exploitable system
because of a setup with badly isolated processes and crappy software
that requires superuser privileges.

X.org can be fixed so it wont need to run as root, using kernel mode setting
(KMS). OpenBSD is interested in this.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=NzM2MA

I don't understand why a network daemon (winbindd from samba) needs root. That
is absolutely stupid, and just begging to get hacked.
It cant be much different from a HTTP or FTP server, and running that as root
would be stupid.

In dhcp3 there was recently discovered several security vulnerabilities. How
convenient that it runs as root.
http://www.debian.org/security/2009/dsa-1833

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: cups
-
  Software runs as root.
This is bad, it should not run as a superuser, it is dangerous in terms of
system security. This is unsafe.
It should safely run as a non-privileged user.

Following the principle of least privilege.
