[Bug 1382190] Re: LXCs assigned IPs by MAAS DHCP lack DNS PTR entries

2014-10-23 Thread Gavin Panella
I think #1 is too limited. This will only satisfy a subset of users, and
it's confusing to an outsider trying to deploy their charms, why won't
RabbitMQ deploy in cluster $x when it deploys fine in cluster $y?. The
answer is not easily discoverable, and the MAAS administrator may not
realise that the size of the cluster's network is relevant to the
frustrated user unless he/she has fully understood the release notes.

The lag in #3 may cause hard to diagnose problems. There are also a lot
more moving parts to line up.

I say go for #2. Rendering 256 lines is a tiny blip in performance,
especially compared to rendering ~65k lines without $GENERATE.

Re: [Bug 1382190] Re: LXCs assigned IPs by MAAS DHCP lack DNS PTR entries

2014-10-22 Thread Gavin Panella
On 22 October 2014 22:03, Graham Binns graham.bi...@canonical.com wrote:
 This works perfectly:

Awesome, that's great. Sort of brain-dump follows:

How does this work for networks that don't line up with IPv4 octets? For
example, for a dynamic range that covers 192.168.0.0/23, would we need
to write the following?

  $GENERATE 1-254 $.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR no-name-yet-$.maas.
  $GENERATE 1-254 $.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR no-name-yet-$.maas.

A /16 would need 256 lines.

Is this expanded macro-like within BIND, or is it compiled into a rule?
It may make a difference to performance.

I assume we'll do this only for IPv4? If it's compiled to a rule, we
/could/ do it for IPv6 too, but that may be a slope down which we don't
want to slip. Ultimately we want to steer people towards reserving IP
addresses via MAAS's API.

Is this enough to satisfy RabbitMQ? Some services like to make sure that
they can round-trip through DNS, i.e. that the PTR record resolves to a
name that then resolves back to the starting address.

We could choose the prefix to encourage people to reserve addresses. For
example, dynamic-$, anon-$, temporary-$, or do-not-use-$, in
order of severity. Unfortunately this is bikeshed territory, so I'm
going to put myself out of the running by voting for
do-not-rely-on-this-you-get-to-keep-the-pieces-and-give-me-one-million-dollars-$.

[Bug 1317958] Re: Right after installation, /var/log/apache2/error.log contains a stacktrace FATAL: password authentication failed for user maas

2014-10-13 Thread Gavin Panella
Observed again today. It results in 100s of lines of errors and
stack-traces in Apache's error.log. It would be good to fix this in
packaging, but we can also help in MAAS itself, by retrying in
start_up.py every second or two, and handling the exception ourselves.

A recent example of the error, running on Trusty, using packages from
trunk r3243:

mod_wsgi (pid=28482): Target WSGI script '/usr/share/maas/wsgi.py' cannot be
loaded as Python module.

[Bug 1087183] Re: MaaS cloud-init configuration specifies 'manage_etc_hosts: localhost'

2014-09-18 Thread Gavin Panella
 Now, is a dhcp lease a permanent address? :) I think it's permanent
 enough for this scenario where MAAS is giving it out, as it even
 updates the DNS record.

In this case, yes, I think it is permanent. MAAS promises to keep that
address for that node until it is released. DHCP is simply the
mechanism. Users are free to set this address statically in their node's
networking configuration.

[Bug 1365130] [NEW] django-admin prints spurious messages to stdout, breaking scripts

2014-09-03 Thread Gavin Panella
Public bug reported:

Scripts in MAAS's packaging rely on shell code like the following:

  APIKEY=$(maas-region-admin apikey --username admin)

maas-region-admin is a shell script that execs django-admin.

However, the new django-admin in Utopic prints lines like:

  Using: Python 2.7

to _stdout_ as part of its normal operation. This breaks programs that
rely on capturing stdout.

I would expect that a message of this nature should go to stderr at
least. Better for us would be if it were omitted altogether, but there
may be good reasons for it to stay.

We can work around this in MAAS, by bypassing django-admin.

[Bug 1307614] Re: MAAS sometimes attempts to install to USB flash drive

2014-06-12 Thread Gavin Panella
Something we want to add to MAAS is the idea of recommissioning, i.e.
when a node is released back to MAAS, it runs a cycle that does a bunch
of things to get the machine ready to go out the door again. For
example, reset BIOS settings, erase disks. Like commissioning, a MAAS
admin would be able to configure their own scripts to run.

With the existing commissioning stage and a new commissioning stage,
we'd have an opportunity to run a site-specific find me the disk on
which to put the OS script. This could set a pre-agreed disk label,
e.g. OS or ROOT, that curtin could be modified to take notice of.

More flexible than that is for curtin to grow the capability to run a
site-specific fine me the disk script directly, but that would entail
more work in MAAS to support it.

[Bug 1298784] Re: Vulnerable to user-interface redressing (e.g. clickjacking)

2014-05-08 Thread Gavin Panella
** Description changed:

- = Impact =
- A remote attacker could trick users into performing unintended actions within
the application.
+ [Test Case]
+ Without the fix:
+   1. Install MAAS.
+ 2. Create web page on other domain that loads MAAS in an IFRAME.
+ 3. MAAS loads and is usable.

- = Details =
- The MAAS application has no protection against user-interface redressing
attacks like clickjacking. By
- displaying the application in carefully constructed iframes on an unrelated
domain, an attacker may
- be able to deceive users into performing one or two-click actions in the
context of the application,
- such as deploying a charm. The impact of a successful clickjacking attack is
similar to that of cross-site
- request forgery.
- See http://www.sectheory.com/clickjacking.htm for a worked demonstration of a
clickjacking attack.
+ With the fix:
+ 3. MAAS should not display, or should break out of the IFRAME.

- = Exploitability =
- An attacker can only create exploits for forms that he would be able to view,
as he would need to
- know the URL and positioning of the target forms. The attacker would also
have to persuade a logged-
- in user to visit and click once or twice on the page under his control.
- A well-executed clickjacking attack is likely to go unnoticed by its victims.
+ Impact:
+ A remote attacker could trick users into performing unintended actions
+   within the application.

- = Remediation =
- The application should instruct browsers not to allow other websites to load
it in a frame, by adding
- the X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN server header.

[Bug 1304518] Re: Confusing wording in the IPMI section of node power data

2014-04-22 Thread Gavin Panella
When a BMC uses DHCP we can't be sure of its IP address at any moment in
time. Using a MAC address is better in this situation because the IP
address can be discovered from that. If the BMC has a statically
assigned IP address, or the DHCP server has been configured to assign it
a stable address, then either the MAC or the IP addresses can be given.

[Bug 1287224] Re: pronounceable machine names in MAAS

$ sdw=(...)  # The Seven Dirty Words
$ egrep -i (${sdw[0]}|${sdw[1]}|...) /usr/share/dict/american-english | wc -l
38

I assume we'd want to use a wordlist without profanity?

There are also only 72945 words without punctuation in that list, but
MAAS has bigger ambitions! :)

To solve both these problems we could select, say, 500 words that are
safe and memorable along with a numeric suffix.

Another option is to use subdomains for clusters. Clusters are only
meant to contain a few hundred machines, so a 500-long word list would
probably suffice if it were combined with a subdomain (selected from
another word list?).

[Bug 1153077] Re: rabbitmq queue fills up and celery stops executing tasks when upload_dhcp_leases is done every minute (by default)

2014-02-25 Thread Gavin Panella
I've recently seen a somewhat similar situation:

- Celery went down for a while.

- Celerybeat jobs accumulated in RabbitMQ.

- When Celery came back up, it spun manically, going through hundreds of
old jobs.

However, neither Celery nor RabbitMQ showed signs of falling over. They
were just busy.

It's a separate bug, but we should ensure that Celerybeat jobs have a
very short lifetime. Maybe RabbitMQ or Celery have a mechanism for
ignoring old jobs. If not, we can add a timestamp check to the job
implementations themselves.

[Bug 1282160] [NEW] maas-pserv cannot bind to port 69

2014-02-19 Thread Gavin Panella
Public bug reported:

pserv has been modified recently to bind to newly configured network
interfaces. It does this periodically at runtime. However, it cannot
bind to port 69 after twistd has dropped root privileges. An authbind
rule to allow the maas user to bind to port 69 would resolve this
(tested on the Garage MAAS).

[Bug 1274499] Re: dhcp lease rollover causes loss of access to managment IP

2014-02-12 Thread Gavin Panella
This appears to have happened in the Garage MAAS. Attached is the leases
file, which contains 141 static host maps, and references 145 different
hardware addresses. Below is a snippet from the dhcpd.conf file that was
being used at the time:

subnet 192.168.9.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
       filename pxelinux.0;
       ignore-client-uids true;
       option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;

       option domain-name cloud.mallards;
       option routers 192.168.9.1;
       option ntp-servers 91.189.94.4;
       range dynamic-bootp 192.168.9.10 192.168.9.150;
       class PXE {

In upstream MAAS we probably should warn users about defining overly
narrow network ranges, warn when a network is at or near capacity, and
document it all.

consult BootImages before automatically defaulting to i386.

[Bug 1237615] [NEW] python-bson-ext does not encode binary in Apache with mod_wsgi

2013-10-09 Thread Gavin Panella
Public bug reported:

In a component of MAAS we're using python-bson to dump out structures
containing binary data. Everything works fine in development, but breaks
in production under Apache.

In Python 2.x (we're using 2.7) it's necessary to wrap str/bytes objects
in bson.binary.Binary; the encoder then does an isinstance check and
encodes these objects as binary data - or \x05 e_name binary, from the
spec. However, under Apache our binary data is being encoded as string
data - or \x02 e_name string, from the spec. When decoding this
becomes a unicode object, which chokes the next part of the MAAS's
processing.

I think this is due to the C extension module. Apache and/or mod_wsgi
does some weird things with Python contexts (I don't know much about
this, just enough to know it can be a problem), and I suspect the
PyObject_IsInstance(value, state-Binary) condition in
bson/_cbsonmodule.c is failing because state-Binary is referencing a
different Binary type than MAAS's code is.

The following are the mod_wsgi directives we're using in Apache:

{{{
WSGIDaemonProcess maas user=maas group=maas processes=2 threads=1
display-name=%{GROUP}

# Without this, defining a tag as a malformed xpath expression will hang
# the region controller.

That maas.log from jhujhiti is packed with OAuthUnauthorized exceptions.

Right at the end of celery.log there's:

[Bug 1103195] Re: MAAS WebUI crashes when installing maas-region-controller only

2013-01-24 Thread Gavin Panella
To ensure that we accept as master only the cluster controller on
the local machine, can the region compare the UUID it's given against
the UUID it can see on the filesystem?

Even if the region is in an HA configuration, the cluster controller
will connect to localhost and therefore the region app server reached
will be the one on the same machine, and thus able to see the same
UUID.

Then we can probably get rid of the special cases for maas_url and
whatnot.

If this isn't suitable, then I suggest going with rvba's second
proposal:

 - we fix the two problems I mention above ( a): only accept the
   first controller to connect if it's connecting from localhost, b)
   update nodegroup.maas_url for the first controller if the
   controller does not connect from localhost).

[Bug 1081701] Re: The metadata address mentioned in the preseed is wrong.

2012-11-22 Thread Gavin Panella
Raphaël and I discussed two options:

1. Render the preseed in the cluster.

2. Send the cluster address to the region during start-up so that it
   can render the preseed with the correct address.

We decided that #1 better divides responsibilities, but that we would
go for option #2 for two reasons: it's a lot less work, and it doesn't
preclude doing #1 at a later date and may be useful to that effort.

I made some notes about what it would take to do #1, included below,
which may be worth tracking as a blueprint (Julian, what is the best
way to propose work like this?).

.. -*- mode: rst -*-

Things needed from the region to render a preseed:
==

- From ``maasserver.compose_preseed``:

  - Metadata URL: ``absolute_reverse('metadata')``
  - Token: ``NodeKey.objects.get_token_for_node(node)``
  - Node status: ``node.status`` (only if commissioning or not)

- From ``maasserver.preseed``:

  - Node status: ``node.status`` (only if commissioning or not)

  - Enum ``PRESEED_TYPE``.

    ⇒ Move to ``provisioningserver``?

  - Setting ``PRESEED_TEMPLATE_LOCATIONS``.

    ⇒ Move to ``provisioningserver``.

  - Config:

     - ``commissioning_distro_series``
     - ``main_archive``
     - ``ports_archive``
     - ``http_proxy``

    ⇒ Can be obtained via API.

  - Server host: ``get_maas_facing_server_host`` (used for?)

    ⇒ Already known on cluster?

  - Server URL: ``absolute_reverse('nodes_handler')`` (used for?)

    ⇒ Already known on cluster?

  - Enlistment URL: ``absolute_reverse('enlist')``

  - Disable netboot URL::

      absolute_reverse(
          'metadata-node-by-id',
          args=['latest', node.system_id])

  - Enlistment preseed URL::

      absolute_reverse(
          'metadata-enlist-preseed', args=[version],
          query={'op': 'get_enlist_preseed'})

    ⇒ Becomes responsibility of ``provisioningserver``.

  - Regular preseed URL::

      absolute_reverse(
          'metadata-node-by-id', args=[version, node.system_id],
          query={'op': 'get_preseed'})

    ⇒ Becomes responsibility of ``provisioningserver``.

- From ``contrib/preseeds_v2/generic``:

  - Node architecture: ``node.architecture``

Which boils down to:

Code moves (see below_) and a view that returns:

- Metadata URL: ``absolute_reverse('metadata')``

- Token: ``NodeKey.objects.get_token_for_node(node)``

- Node status: ``node.status`` (only if commissioning or not)

- Node architecture: ``node.architecture``

- Enlistment URL: ``absolute_reverse('enlist')``

- Disable netboot URL::

    absolute_reverse(
        'metadata-node-by-id', args=['latest', node.system_id])

- *Optional:* return config items (e.g. ``ports_archive``)

.. _below: `Adding rendering server to the provisioning server:`_

Adding rendering server to the provisioning server:
===

- Resurrect HTTP server in ``provisioningserver.plugin``.

- Move code, as detailed earlier_, to ``provisioningserver``, and
  perform some moderate refactoring.

- Add handler to the ``provisioningserver`` HTTP server to query the
  view_ detailed above, perhaps query the API for config, and call the
  render code.

.. _earlier: `Things needed from the region to render a preseed:`_
.. _view: `Which boils down to:`_

Notes:
==

- The ``pxeconfig`` view calculates the preseed URLs. This calculation
  no longer needs to happen, and its responsibility passes to the
  provisioning server.

Re: [Bug 1044503] Re: kernel command line is not easily customizable

2012-10-10 Thread Gavin Panella
On 10 Oct 2012 20:15, Andres Rodriguez andres...@ubuntu-pe.org wrote:

 I believe we should be able to add an attribute to the Node model. This
 way, we can define a global config that will apply to all nodes. If a
 particular node needs to change the attributes, it should be possible to
 do that independently.

We need to think about sets of machines, as identified by tags or whatever,
rather than individual nodes. The templates that generate the PXE
configurations are already arranged for that kind of thing, but it has
proven to be complicated in practice. We should be as smart as we can and
do everything we can before giving users a free-form field in which to
enter extra bits of the command line.

[Bug 1026857] Re: Installing bind9 as per HACKING.txt leaves a running bind daemon on developer's machines

2012-07-20 Thread Gavin Panella
I don't think it interferes with anything to leave it running, and RSS
on my machine is 4MB, so I'm not sure this is high priority. Also, it
should probably be targeted at bind9 in Ubuntu, to provide a
convenient way to disable start.

** Changed in: maas
   Importance: High = Low

** Also affects: bind9 (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

- I'd really prefer not to have one running.
+ MAAS brings up short-lived instances of named in its test suite,
+ and when running in development mode. It requires that bind9 is
+ installed, but does not use the system instance of named. It
+ would be useful to have an option to disable start of bind9. This
+ may also be useful if running an alternative nameserver on the
+ machine.
