This is a) totally bogus and b) breaks some of our backends (they 500 if asked to process a request which has a host line with a port number they're not listening on). It makes sense is the user installed apache2 from the archive, tried to tweak its configuration to install e.g a LAMP server by hand, then upgrade. You can reproduce in lucid with the following steps $ apt-get install apache2=2.2.14-5ubuntu8 apache2-mpm-prefork=2.2.14-5ubuntu8 apache2.2-common=2.2.14-5ubuntu8 apache2.2-bin=2.2.14-5ubuntu8 $ a2dismod reqtimeout $ mv /etc/apache2/mods-available/reqtimeout.* /tmp/ $ apt-get upgrade You'll also notice the error in the logs .: 45: Can't open /etc/apache2/envvars , there is a high probability that the apache2 configuration has been modified manually and I think those errors are user errors. Anyway the version I have verified that the version of apache2 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.3 in -proposed fixes the issue and the installation is not failing anymore. The version of vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu7.1 in -proposed doesn't completely fix the
issue. If a user whose name starts with ftp exists then the installation still
fails.
To reproduce:
$ adduser ftpuser
$ apt-get install vsftpd
Using getent passwd ${_USERNAME} and getent group ${_USERNAME} instead
of using grep should do the trick.

John, this is the same error because the fix for this bug doesn't
correctly check if the default user/group 'ftp' exits.
To reproduce :
$ sudo adduser --system --group ftpd
$ sudo apt-get install vsftpd
In postinst the following line is wrong
if ! getent passwd | grep -q ^${_USERNAME}
and should be at least
if ! getent passwd | grep -qw ^${_USERNAME}
or simply:
if ! getent passwd ${_USERNAME}
Same thing for checking the existence of the group. BTW the problem
still exists in 10.10.
