[Bug 651875] Re: Bind 9.7.0-P1 validation errors

2011-03-14 Thread Matt Zimmerman
MicroReleaseExceptions is a list of standing exceptions. It's not
necessary to go through the tech board to handle one-off requests like
this one. The SRU team can decide what to do here without TB
involvement.

[Bug 104525] Re: default ntp.conf should use pool.ntp.org servers

2011-01-24 Thread Matt Zimmerman
I've added this bug to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TechnicalBoardAgenda for
the next meeting, which is tomorrow, 25 Jan at 1500 UTC. The issues seem
pretty clear from the comments, so I think we can discuss it regardless
of who shows up. Folks who are interested in this issue are encouraged
to attend, but I don't think we need to block on someone stepping
forward to represent at the meeting.

I'd experienced the same bug, and easily fixed by editing the .conf which you
 guys mentioned, too.
 Just wanna make it clearly.

This bug is about the fact that the plugin was renamed, and this affects
people who have configured dovecot to use the plugin (including those who do
not use postfix-dovecot).

The other bug is about the fact that postfix-dovecot refers explicitly to
the old name, and needs to be changed to use the new name.

[Bug 541486] Re: ubuntu-bug eucalyptus-common attaches massive files

2010-03-18 Thread Matt Zimmerman
According to the upstream developers at the time, it was considered
appropriate to gather these logs for bug reports. Perhaps the real bug
is that they are huge (not rotated often enough or too verbose by
default)? Feel free to do as you feel is best with the apport hook in
any case.

Separately, it might be nice if apport offered the option to selectively
delete certain attachments where the submitter could be certain they
were not relevant (or did not wish to disclose private data). I'll file
a wishlist bug about that.

incompatibilities which make it look like more changes are needed than
 just ec2-* symlinks.

 For example,

 - euca-upload-bundle requires setting S3_URL instead of just defaulting
 to https://s3.amazonaws.com as ec2-upload-bundle does.

 - euca-register requires setting $EC2_ACCESS_KEY and $EC2_SECRET_KEY

 ec2-register does.

 - euca-register requires setting $EC2_URL instead of defaulting to
 https://ec2.amazonaws.com as ec2-register does.

I haven't tried the euca2ools equivalents for the EC2 API tools, but
given the above, I'd guess there's a ways to go before tossing in
symlinks will make euca2ools be command line compatible.

Feel free to copy the above points to new bug reports if compatibility
 is the goal.

For any issues you find with euca2ools which cause you problems on EC2,

You've explicitly told kvm to only boot from CD (-boot d). If you want

drive, you should put -boot dc.

 Matt, Evan-

From the kvm(1) manpage, I think the option you want is:
   # boot from CD-ROM first, switch back to default order after reboot
   -boot once=d

Can you give that a try and see if that gives you the behavior you
 expect?

I tested here with a real, working disk image, and a live ISO.

 Using:
  * /usr/bin/kvm -m 512 -cdrom ../iso/karmic-desktop-amd64.iso -hda
 karmic-server.img -boot once=d

I booted to the LiveCD desktop first, then used the graphical Restart
option, and rebooted directly to my server.img disk.

I don't understand why this option should be necessary. Following the
steps in my original report, I would expect one of two things to happen:

 * The CD-ROM boot fails (because the disc is ejected) and it falls back
to booting from the hard disc

 * The CD-ROM boot succeeds (because the tray closes) and I can boot from
the hard disc by selecting the appropriate option from the menu

Scott's comment #12 explains the difference pretty clearly. I should be
able to repeat this process as many times as I like without restarting KVM.

Instead, I get:

 * System fails to boot from the CD, and so halts and needs to be restarted
   with different command-line options

The workaroud you've suggested would largely satisfy my needs for Ubuntu
testing, but I don't understand why it shouldn't just work intuitively as
described above.

[Bug 447991] [NEW] eucalyptus-cc cannot be installed without eucalyptus-cloud

2009-10-10 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

From Dan Nurmi:

 Install

 on eucabuild1 -

 ; apt-get install eucalyptus-cloud eucalyptus-walrus

 on duo -

 ; apt-get install eucalyptus-cc eucalyptus-sc

 on sg -

 ; apt-get install eucalyptus-nc

after all installs, the processes are all running, but sc is not running
correctly (commandline has '--disable-walrus', but is missing
 '--disable-cloud'. correct commandline should be:

 eucalyptus-cloud -h / -u eucalyptus --pidfile
 /var/run/eucalyptus/eucalyptus.pid -L console-log --disable-cloud
 --disable-walrus --remote-dns

The problem here will be that the eucalyptus-cc package depends on
eucalyptus-cloud. --disable-cloud isn't passed because we think we're
supposed to be running the cloud controller (because it's installed).

[Bug 447991] Re: eucalyptus-cc cannot be installed without eucalyptus-cloud

2009-10-10 Thread Matt Zimmerman
I tested eucalyptus-cc without eucalyptus-cloud installed, and it works
at least insofar as the simple post-start test, i.e.
http://localhost:8774/axis2/services shows the EucalyptusCC service to
be available. Automatic registration doesn't work, but also isn't
attempted (because it's triggered by eucalyptus-cloud starting up), so
that's OK, and it can be done manually.

I haven't tested further, but I think that's sufficient indication to
remove the package dependency for further testing.

[Bug 439868] Re: UEC images could be smaller

2009-10-08 Thread Matt Zimmerman
One of the nice things about the original script was that it didn't
require root (to mount filesystems etc.). Regarding the inodes
consideration, I *think* that growing the number of inodes works fine,
so this shouldn't be an issue if we provide a smallish image and use the
script to make it larger if needed.

Shouldn't that be using scope link? I don't know if that would matter

[Bug 429106] Re: kernel and initramfs should be available for uec

2009-10-01 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Fixing importance to High. It is not appropriate to use the host kernel
for this purpose, as:

- It is the -server kernel, rather than the -virtual kernel (and this use case
is exactly why -virtual was created)
- The instance could be 32-bit, while the host is 64-bit (this may in fact
work, but is not correct)
- The host and image may be based on different versions of Ubuntu
- The host and image may have different kernel module ABIs

There are probably others, but suffice to say, this needs to be
corrected.

[Bug 437058] [NEW] Walrus registration assumes that walrus is running on the same host as the frontend

2009-09-26 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Dustin is working on automating the registration step, but the approach
we're using for now only works for the (default) case where the walrus
is on the same system as the eucalyptus frontend. This is a reminder to
fix that down the road.

[Bug 365156] Re: -cloud and -cc init scripts don't set JAVA_HOME

2009-09-25 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Reading the script, and Loic's error output, it looks like perhaps Loic
had JAVA_HOME set to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun, but had no JVM there. As
Soren says, the script finds java in $PATH and this works in all of our
tests.

Please reopen if I've got it wrong and there's a bug here.

2009-09-25 Thread Matt Zimmerman
I think this was probably fixed since 1.6~bzr588, perhaps here:

eucalyptus (1.6~bzr588-0ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * debian/eucalyptus-udeb.postinst:
- Fix order of db_set vs. db_metaget.
- Fix reversed sense of cluster detection.
- Ensure that tasksel/first preseeding will be propagated to /target.

  [ Soren Hansen ]
  * On upgrades, migrate statoverride for /usr/share/eucalyptus/euca_rootwrap
to /usr/lib/eucalyptus/euca_rootwrap, in case the admin overrode it.
  * Make sure the configuration bits in eucalyptus-common's postinst
only get called during install and upgrade.
  * Add axis2 repository for Eucalyptus. This is the only way to use a
separate Axis2/C configuration file for Eucalyptus.
  * New upstream snapshot. (FFe: LP: #420035)

  [ Dustin Kirkland ]
  * Remove init scripts from source package that are no longer used.
  * Make sure $EUID is set in init scripts.

Less than ideal, perhaps, but certainly worth the tradeoff in my opinion.
The only cost should be in storage space, and there presumably aren't very

The images should do what is necessary to support both UEC and EC2 very

I guess this raises the questions of what modules we are talking about,
and this is an area where I wouldn't know what to cut out. I personally
depend on some which may not be considered part of the core modules
 including: fuse, xfs, dm_mod, sha256, dm_crypt

The -virtual kernel, I believe, includes all of the usual stuff that the
-server kernel ships, but subtracts out the hardware drivers (since they are
not used in virtual guests).

I think we should start with the -virtual config, and can add things if
needed from there.

Re: [Bug 429169] [NEW] ec2: Include kernel modules in AMIs

I read that to indicate that we should have installed in the image
linux-image-virtual and linux-image-ec2 (or whatever that ends up being
called). According to [1] the installed size of the -virtual kernel (which
we'd probably install for UEC) to be 8MB, and [2] shows the -ec2 flavor
 to be ~ 18M.

When bug 428692 is fixed, I'd expect a smaller amount of modules in the
latter, resulting in a smaller installed size. So, we're looking at less
than 26M installed into a 10GB filesystem. So, I agree, that is probably
 a reasonable use of space.

Agreed.
