Good that the python-keystoneauth1 build-depend got fixed in debian.

OK, mystery solved. python-openstacksdk does NOT run tests in python3.
I don't know what I saw originally when I thought it did. But that
explains the mismatch. The version in Debian vcs does run the tests

basis.

[Bug 1267393] Re: [MIR] juju-core, juju-mongodb, gccgo, golang

2015-10-14 Thread Michael Terry
> - reverse-dependencies don't have to be rebuilt for a security update to a
> C library; even if an API does break, C revdeps can be left unbuildable
> for a while with much less impact

I get that you're saying it's good because we don't have to waste
security-update-time fixing reverse-depends. Which is a good point.
But it also sorta sounds like "in this scenario, the advantage of C
libraries is that we have unbuildable packages that we don't know
about". So a bit of a mixed blessing.

> - since we're not using shared libraries (at this point), there's nothing
> in the packaging of go packages (like sonames for C libraries) that
> signals to proposed-migration that there's been an incompatible change
> requiring a transition.

For incompatible changes requiring transitions, I thought the Go
convention was a new package name. Like check.v1 or check.v2. Which
would be a whole new package in Debian/Ubuntu. Much like shared
libraries bumping sonames.

--

So adding synthesized dep8 tests or proposed-migration logic to confirm
no ftbfs by rebuilding Go reverse-dependencies are good ideas. But I
maintain it's just as good an idea as doing the same thing for any other
package upload (checking reverse-depends for ftbfs). The only
difference I see is Steve's point about the security team being faced
with ftbfs packages that they must now fix. Normal package updates
wouldn't require a rebuild of all reverse-depends, so those would be
status quo.

1) So, since the security team is facing this, I'll leave this specific
question to them. They didn't mention monitoring for ftbfs in their
list of requirements before, but maybe they'd like to? I guess the
easiest route would be a golang-autopkgtest package like pitti
mentioned.

2) Am I being too carefree? Do Go library minor updates tend to break
builds more often than C or Python libraries? (Honest question, I'm not
a Go native.) I had assumed Go folks have typical engineering
practices, but maybe the statically-linked nature of Go causes people to
play fast and loose with updates.

[Bug 1267393] Re: [MIR] juju-core, juju-mongodb, gccgo, golang

2015-10-13 Thread Michael Terry
Doko, I just noticed your comment about dep8 tests. I agree that some
sort of mechanism to avoid ftbfs would be good. Though in this respect,
golang isn't so different than C libraries, where an unexpected API
update or library bug can cause ftbfs in reverse-depends. We use dep8
tests as best practices to avoid that, but don't *require* it as part of
a MIR.

But actually, I expected we could use Built-Using fields in our
proposed-migration tooling to automatically test that reverse-depends
could still build. Is that not in the works yet?

That seems more packaging-friendly than requiring a bunch of one-line
dep8 tests to trigger a rebuild test. Especially if we have to add a
delta to get it.

golang-go.net-dev build-depends on golang-x-text-dev (which didn't have
a MIR section here -- I've added a bug task for it now anyway).

But golang-x-text isn't ready yet:
- It is ftbfs due to test failures. That should be looked at.
- It needs a team bug subscriber.

golang-go.net-dev though looks good, approved. There is an oddity in
Debian around it being removed from testing [1], but that appears to be
a mistake? I don't see any bugs filed against it, there was no removal
hint, and the package tracker is giving inconsistent statuses/versions.
In any case, we have the version that Debian seems to be OK with.

2015-10-13 Thread Michael Terry
golang-go-dbus has one blocking problem and I've got a few minor concerns:
- Needs to use Built-Using
- It's about to be removed from Debian testing due to its dependency on
golang-gocheck. Not an immediate problem for us, but since we want to port
away from gocheck anyway, maybe we can help Debian here and keep a little
better in sync.
- This is a native Go implementation of libdbus. I'm not super thrilled about
another DBus implementation in main, but I get the desire to be native and
allow cross compilation.

[Bug 1481213] Re: [MIR] python-funcsigs, python-linecache2, python-traceback2

2015-08-17 Thread Michael Terry
I am also troubled by the duplication in main. But since such python
module backports aren't likely to be security sensitive, I'm slightly
mollified. Since Debian and upstreams are starting to embrace the
concept, it seems counterproductive to say just port to python3
instead. Hopefully this will get them on the path to python3.

Though once everyone is ported to python3, they'll now be depending on
all these clone modules. Ideally transitioning to the stdlib wouldn't
be hard at that point.

Anyway. funcsigs looks OK.

[Bug 1482765] Re: [MIR] neutron-vpnaas

2015-08-12 Thread Michael Terry
This is OK from a packaging side (nice unit tests!).

It has a system daemon, so I'll subscribe the security team for a look
see.

It also has been removed from Debian testing, but that's no big deal, it
was a temporary thing to let a transition go through.

More troublingly, we have never sync'ed up with Debian. And notably,
are now using a separate versioning scheme. Are we truly doomed to
never be able to merge from Debian as is? I guess we'd have to get them
to bump their version to 2: or 3: in order to make that work. Still, we
should try to merge everything but the version if possible, will make
merges simpler. Any comment on this mess?

[Bug 1472953] Re: [MIR] python-rtslib-fb

2015-07-10 Thread Michael Terry
So this apparently is a fork of the 'rtslib' source package. It adds
python3 support and seems to be packaged better. So that's OK.

It looks OK packaging wise. It calls update-alternatives --remove in
the postrm script, which is bad [1], but since it also calls it in the
prerm script, I think that's fine.

I'm not super thrilled with adding a redundant iSCSI option. But I
understand your reasoning. Since this runs a daemon I'll ask the
security team to take a look, and they can comment on how much they'd
hate supporting two iSCSI solutions.

2015-03-25 Thread Michael Terry
python-oslo.log from the PPA (https://launchpad.net/~james-
page/+archive/ubuntu/kilo/+packages) is fine too. Though, is there a
reason it only runs the python2 tests?

It gives lintian warning virtual-package-depends-without-real-package-
depends build-depends-indep: python-oslo-config but that's due to a
weird stanza in python-oslo-config, where python-oslo-config-doc has
Provides: python-oslo-config

Could you look at that at some point and remove that stanza?

Also, only the python2 version of this package needs to be promoted, I
believe. If we do end up promoting the python3 version, we'll need to
promote the python3-oslo-serialization binary package (source is in main
already).

[Bug 1274247] Re: [MIR] Glusterfs

2015-03-04 Thread Michael Terry
Looks like upstream fixed the cppcheck errors, which is great! But that
was just one item in Seth's list.

To advance this MIR, we'd need another look over from Seth. But I'm
leery of throwing it back to him when there hasn't been significant
progress. But I'm not close to the matter and could be convinced that
there has been significant progress.

python-pysaml2 is fine from a packaging point of view, but I'm also
going to pass to Seth for a quick look.

I was looking at xmlsec1 too, from a packaging perspective. And it
looks like test failures don't fail the build. That should be
addressed.

[Bug 1407695] Re: [MIR] python-saml2, python-repoze.who, xmlsec1

2015-02-19 Thread Michael Terry
Regarding python-repoze.who... It looks fine (has tests, bug
subscriber, no important bugs, etc). But it's orphaned in Debian. Can
I get a comment on how much of a problem the server team thinks that
will be?

I'll also pass to Seth for a quick look, since this is an authentication
module.

[Bug 1399581] Re: [MIR] python-sysv-ipc

2015-01-29 Thread Michael Terry
Ah, I get it. So basically you're suggesting we drop the need for this
MIR to help avoid double implementations. I'm fine with that. It would
still be an optional run-time dependency, just not a build-dep / tested?
Sounds good.
