Ok. Note that I have since fixed the smb.conf file by removing wins support as I mentioned previously. However please note that I did not change the smb.conf file myself. I cleared away all old samba logs, then ran the command apt-get install samba. This gave the following messages: root@garfield:/var/log/samba# apt-get install samba Reading package lists... I tried to go through the commands in /etc/init/nmbd.conf, and when I tried the following lines it failed: root@garfield:~# testparm -s --parameter-name='disable netbios' Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf rlimit_max: increasing rlimit_max (1024) to minimum Windows limit (16384) Processing section [printers] Processing section [print$] Processing section [Public] Loaded services file OK. ERROR: both 'wins support = true' and 'wins server = server list' cannot be set in the smb.conf file. nmbd will abort with this setting. No I did not modify anything in smb.conf, however one of the upgrades must have done so - I have a file /etc/samba/smb.conf.ucf-dist which seems to contain the settings as they were before.
