[Bug 648228] Re: boot ordering broken: does not try next boot device

2010-11-15 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Well, pressing 'q' indeed makes it proceed with the installation cdrom.
However, it doesn't do so non-interactively.

In my setup, I configure both VMs and physical machines to boot via PXE,
but by default have them boot locally. Only in case they require
maintenance, the PXE configuration is changed so that they are rebooted
into a rescue or installation system. The behavior described in this bug
prevents this kind of setup.

[Bug 648228] [NEW] boot ordering broken: does not try next boot device

2010-09-26 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

steps to reproduce:
 - install qemu, libvirt-bin, virt-manager, kvm-pxe
 - create new virtual machine
 - connect some installation medium to the virtual CD drive
 - configure boot device order: Boot Options - Boot Device Order:
- check PXE, CDROM and local hard disk
- configure boot devices in that order
 - boot

Expected results:
 - system first tries PXE, fails, then boots from CD

Observed results:
 - system continously tries PXE boot via tftp, never falls back to installation
CD or hard drive.

Re: [Bug 350936] Re: Should shut down domains on system shutdown

2010-08-16 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Andy,

I didn't try your suggestion (yet), but is it really necessary to create
the kvmguests init script? Can't you just place the script inside the
pre-stop script section of /etc/init/libvirt-bin.conf?

Moreover, I've noticed that your kvmguests script uses upstart's 'start'
command to ensure that libvirtd is actually running. is that really
necessary? AFAIUI this can be dropped if integrated in libvirt-bin.conf

As for your change to /etc/init.d/sendsigs, wouldn't it be less
intrusive to make /etc/init/libvirt-bin.conf or probably libvirtd itself
drop or copy the pid files into /lib/init/rw/sendsigs.omit.d? AFAIUI,
the upstart job should be executed before the sendsigs init script, or
is there another race here?

Re: [Bug 350936] Re: Should shut down domains on system shutdown

2010-06-29 Thread Reinhard Tartler
instead of destroying vms, wouldn't be a more elegant solution to save
the state of the VM in a statefile?

On bootup, upstart would check for such statefiles and restore the
VMs. This would work even for VMs that don't react to ACPI events
properly and saves the VM's uptimes.

[Bug 350936] Re: Should shut down domains on system shutdown

2010-05-25 Thread Reinhard Tartler
How about adding a pre-stop script to /etc/init/libvirt-bin.conf that
uses /usr/bin/virsh to iterate over all running guests to shut them
down? Probably this should be done a) in parallel and b) supervised by
reasonable timeouts. So technically, it might make sense to implement
that pre-stop script in C or python to access libvirt directly, or
extend /usr/bin/virsh to offer an appropriate command.

2008-11-02 Thread Reinhard Tartler

 The fix is:
 mv /etc/rc0.d/S31umountnfs.sh /etc/rc0.d/S14umountnfs.sh
 mv /etc/rc6.d/S31umountnfs.sh /etc/rc6.d/S14umountnfs.sh

I'm unsure if that is the correct solution. It will most likely to break
systems that have /usr not on /. Similar problems could arise with
/usr/local/ not on / but custom modifications.

However I wonder if S15wpa-ifupdown should be moved to S41wpa-ifupdown
instead. That *should* cause less breakage and do the right thing
generally.

As I said, I don't know the right way to do a rename patch, so does
 someone know?

creating a patch for that is not the problem. Finding the correct
solution with a proper explanation for debian/changelog is way more
challanging and important!

Well, 2 people reported in this very thread that moving wpa-ifupdown to
S36 does not fix it. I think that's because of K16dhcdbd.sh. Name
resolution is still needed when unmounting NFS drives.

That does not really make sense. According to
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s-sysvinit, the
Knn scripts are always executed before any S script. I cannot see how
renaming S15wpa-ifupdown to S41wpa-ifupdown will interefere here.

As this is an extra indication that I have not understood the problem
completely, and given that this bug is already pretty heatly discussed,
I will take extra care before considering any change in this matter.

Looking further at it, it seems pretty obvious why renaming it to
S36wpa-ifupdown does not fix it: unmounting nfs and other filesystems
happen at S40. In order to fix this issue wpasupplicant has to be taken
down after that. Which is a real pain in debian, since wpasupplicant is
installed there in /usr/sbin, which might no longer be available at this
stage. Luckily in ubuntu it is in /sbin, though.

That's why the patch suggests moving up umountnfs instead of pushing
 down 2 things.

Yes, still I'd like to know what I'm actually doing before uploading
random patches some guys on some bug have proposed that might or might
not fix a (granted, very annoying) bug.
