[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP+SSL breaks setuid applications like su, sudo, apache2 suexec, and atd

2012-02-03 Thread nutznboltz
According to Andreas Metzler
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2011/02/msg6.html
{{ GnuTLS upstream has added support for different crypto backends in
2.11.x and has chosen nettle as prefered backend (2.10.x is using
libgcrypt). }}

I have started to experiment with using a gnutls26 package with nettle
instead of libgcrypt11 on Ubuntu 12.04.

I have yet to adjust the gnutls26 package dependencies, at this point
I just cheat and install nettle-dev manually:

sudo apt-get install nettle-dev

Then I

apt-get source gnutls26

to fetch the source for gnutls26-2.12.14

chop out
--with-libgcrypt
from debian/rules

bump the package version in debian/changelog to 2.12.14-5ubuntu2.1

and rebuild with

debuild -i -uc -us -b

then I put a checkpoint on the VM and install the package:

dpkg -i libgnutls26_2.12.14-5ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb

but then sudo works on my LDAP+SSL client.

This bug no longer pertains to be as it is opened against libgcrypt11
now and to me this is now a GnuTLS backend selection bug.

I put the patched gnutls into this PPA as my preferred solution.

2011-11-02 Thread nutznboltz
I could not reproduce booting the guest by setting processor affinity to
a single host CPU.

1. Start 32-bit 2-CPU RHEL-5 compatible VM guest and pause on grub screen
2. locked it to host CPU #1
$ sudo taskset -p 0x0001 3127
pid 3127's current affinity mask: 3f
pid 3127's new affinity mask: 1
3. Let the guest proceed booting from grub and it hung at a different time,
right after displaying:
Time: kvm-clock clocksource has been installed.

gdahlman probably mean single guest CPU not single host CPU.

[Bug 795717] Re: 32bit rhel and centos 5.(5|6) hangs on boot on natty

2011-11-02 Thread nutznboltz
32-bit 2-CPU RHEL-5 compatible VM guest boots successfully on Natty with the
patch which I installed into a kernel in this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~nutznboltz/+archive/kvm-clock-fix-for-2.6.38-on-lucid

$ uname -srvm
Linux 2.6.38-12-generic #1~ppa2~natty1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 1 22:41:06 UTC 2011
x86_64

The history of this from my perspective is I first encountered issues
with the libvirt virsh command getting stuck or not being able to reboot
VM guests successfully. I chased the issue down to the bug in this
ticket only to see it slipped QA testing. I went back and repeated all
the tests myself to be certain. Now it's time for me to open a new bug
report to petition for an SRU.

The same VM host describe in comment #38 is now running
2.6.38-12.51.1~ppa1~lucid1 and the 32-bit RHEL-compatible VM guest does
not hang while using 2 CPUs anymore.

The VM host is also running two Ubuntu 10.04 and one Ubuntu 11.04 VM
guests OK as well.

32-bit RHEL 5 compatible Qemu/KVM guest, really Scientific Linux 5.7. The guest
was built from SL.57.090911.DVD.i386.disc1.iso plus today's updates.
With 1 CPU it boots fine.
With 2 CPUs it hangs.
See attached screenshot of virt-manager plus virt-top. The disk and network
activity in virt-top are always zeros when the VM is hung while the CPU
activity is high. Note VM host has 6-cpu cores so 5.7% CPU is averaged across
them. Regular /usr/bin/top shows /usr/bin/kvm getting 100% for this guest while
it is hug.

[Bug 795717] Re: 32bit rhel and centos 5.(5|6) hangs on boot on natty

2011-11-01 Thread nutznboltz
In comment #2
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu-kvm/+bug/795717/comments/2
gdahlman's observation:
{{ As an update I can boot when the guest is restricted to a single cpu ... }}

I think means that on the VM host if /usr/bin/kvm is forced to run on
only one CPU via setting its processor affinity (via /usr/bin/taskset
from the util-linux package) this issue does not occur. I can and will
test that too soon.

If it's true it explains a bit of why Ubuntu VM guests only sometime
hang. The /usr/bin/kvm process running them might only sometimes switch
CPUs while the VM guest is rebooting while /usr/bin/kvm running 32-bit
RHEL 5 with 2 CPUs might always switch CPUs while the VM guest is
rebooting.

Also of note, 64-bit RHEL 5 does not use kvm-clock as a clocksource.
For example:

64-bit RHEL 5
$ sudo cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource
jiffies

32-bit RHEL 5
$ sudo cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource
acpi_pm jiffies hpet tsc pit kvm-clock

Both x86 and x86_64 RHEL 6 use kvm-clock but also linux kernel 2.6.32

I think by not using kvm-clock 64-bit RHEL 5 is not 100% vulnerable the
way 32-bit RHEL 5 is.

[Bug 795717] Re: 32bit rhel and centos 5.(5|6) hangs on boot on natty

2011-10-31 Thread nutznboltz
This patch has yet to be put in lucid-proposed 2.6.38 backport package:
linux-lts-backport-natty

I found this out while working on LP: #882579

I added the missing patch to linux-lts-backport-natty-2.6.38-12.51~lucid1
and uploaded the resulting linux-lts-backport-natty-2.6.38-12.51.1~ppa1~lucid1
to this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~nutznboltz/+archive/kvm-clock-fix-for-2.6.38-on-lucid

@Stefan I'm in a good position to test as soon as the PPA completes
building. I've had all sorts of issues relating to this and a number of
systems to try it on.

[Bug 795717] Re: 32bit rhel and centos 5.(5|6) hangs on boot on natty

2011-10-31 Thread nutznboltz
I build a 32-bit RHEL 5 compatible Qemu/KVM guest, really Scientific
Linux 5.7. The guest was built from SL.57.090911.DVD.i386.disc1.iso
plus today's updates.

The guest runs fine with 1 CPU defined and hangs trying to boot with 2
CPUs defined so I can reproduce this 100% with the following VM host:

$ lsb_release -ds
Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
$ uname -srvm
Linux 2.6.38-12-server #51~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 29 20:09:53 UTC 2011 x86_64

Qemu/KVM/Libvirt is the one from Natty backported to Lucid via PPA:

When the 2.6.38-12 backport kernel plus the kvm clock patch finishes
compiling I will install it and test to see if the 32-bit RHELish guest
still hangs or not.

I will also test on regular x86_64 Natty soon.

Notable in that thread:

a post about using -F with trace-cmd too:

a post which states: When booting with clocksouce=hpet, the system does not

a post which states: Using the wrong clock easily causes hangs. The system

a hang for (3 years - 3 ms).

[Bug 882579] Re: Some Commands return: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock

2011-10-28 Thread nutznboltz
I've been able to narrow this down a little more. The number of VM
guests is not a factor, this has happened on a VM host with only one
guest. The VM guest kernel does not seem to matter either, even VM
guests which are Linux distros other than Ubuntu are affected.

It seems that the /usr/bin/kvm process goes into an infinite loop during
VM guest shutdown.

I'm still investigating this further.

[Bug 882579] [NEW] Some Commands return: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock

2011-10-27 Thread nutznboltz
Public bug reported:

While attempting to use virsh commands this error occurs:

Oct 27 08:52:22 boron libvirtd: 08:52:23.000: 25851: error :
qemuDomainObjBeginJobWithDriver:453 : Timed out during operation: cannot
acquire state change lock

While the error state is present certain commands like virsh shutdown
and virsh destroy elicit that error message and fail to work
completely I found that if I kill the kvm guest processes

$ kill -9 $(ps ax | grep '/usr/bin/kvm.*guestname' | awk '{print $1}')

Then virsh start guestname would work.

I'm not certain that the number of VM guests is the issue, however, this
happens more frequently to me on systems with larger numbers of guests.
We have one with 14 guests and another with 53.

[Bug 882579] Re: Some Commands return: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock

2011-10-27 Thread nutznboltz
Today two VM hosts running kernel 2.6.38-11, one with with 14 guests and
another with 53 had scheduled reboots of the many of their guests.

On the VM host with 14 guests, 11 rebooted. On the one with 53 guests,
48 rebooted.

VM guests that automatically rebooted this morning at 6:30 AM via at(8)
hung instead of rebooted.

All of the VM guests were rebooting from kernel 2.6.38-11 into 2.6.38-12

Not all of the VM guests on the hosts were scheduled to be rebooted.

virsh shutdown and virsh destroy appeared to always hang.

After using kill -9 on the PID of the VM guest virsh start for that
guest worked every time.

Initially on the VM hosts virsh list would output some VM names then
hang.

After enough VM guests were reset via kill -9 (but before all of them
were) virsh list became able to run to completion.

Using kill -9 directly on the /usr/bin/kvm process of the hung VM
guest that was using 100% CPU did restore the ability to use virsh
start on the guest. That is consistent with the comment #26 by Daniel
Berrange in the Red Hat ticket about The QEMU process has hung.

[Bug 882579] Re: Some Commands return: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock

2011-10-27 Thread nutznboltz
If you look at the last comment in the Red Hat bug report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=676205#c26

{{ 1. The QEMU process has hung.

QEMU won't respond to monitor commands. The API call making the first
monitor command will wait forever, any subsequent API calls issuing monitor
commands will timeout after ~30 seconds with this libvirt error message.

This is expected behaviour when QEMU has hung. }}

I think this might be the issue I am experiencing.

[Bug 882579] Re: Some Commands return: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock

2011-10-27 Thread nutznboltz
I don't think virsh shutdown and virsh destroy are triggers.

I think when the guest rebooted something went wrong and subsequent
attempts to use virsh shutdown and virsh destroy fail.

This morning the en-mass VM guest reboot was triggered by cron jobs
inside the guests.

I tried unsuccessfully to reproduce this on a VM host that only has a
single VM guest. I'm still investigating if having several VM guests
reboot at the same time is the trigger or not.

You are supposed to be able to use the -N (--nice) option to ntpd but
upstream ntp bug report shows it doesn't work:

http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1230

Testing on 11.04

[Bug 229632] Re: ntpd should run niced

2011-08-19 Thread nutznboltz
@Jamie given that the default ntpd configuration is to poll and the
stability of the clock affects the polling interval[1] I would strongly
suggest the default ntpd configuration be adjusted to run with the -N
option since it would cut down on the load of NTP servers if polling was
less frequent. When this scales to the world sizes it does become an
issue.

1. In a nutshell when the clock is stable there is less need for ntpd to check
to see the time on the upstream NTP server so it ratchets back the interval
(decreases frequency) for polling by sleeping longer between checks. See ntp
option maxpoll and minpoll in man ntp.conf to see the controls of the limits
of the polling frequency range. See What is the best polling Interval?

[Bug 229632] Re: ntpd should run niced

2011-08-19 Thread nutznboltz
The minimum sleep time between ntpd upstream requests is 64 seconds.
With 64000 clients an ntpd server must answer one thousand requests per
second.

If the client ntpd clocks are very stable they will ratchet back to one
request every 1024 seconds (about 17 minutes) so the same 6400 clients
would only make the server process 62.5 requests per second.

[Bug 229632] Re: ntpd should run niced

2011-08-19 Thread nutznboltz
Try with and with out ntpd -N option.

Use ntpq -p or ntpdc -c peers to view the polling interval. Both
reports have a poll column which is the sleep time in seconds between
requests being sent out over the network to the upstream NTP source.

The poll column will eventually change from 64 to 128 then 256 through
1024. This change can take hours or even days to occur as the clock
stabilizes.

Without -N I haven't seen the polling interval get to 1024 on my
systems as process preemption destabilizes ntpd too much.

/iso/debian-507-i386-netinst.iso -enable-kvm -cpu qemu32 -net nic,vlan=0
-net user,vlan=0,hostname=emu -monitor pty -boot d

Attempting to boot Debian 5 32-bit guest gets as far as
Decompressing Linux... Parsing ELF... done.
Booting the kernel
Then nothing. The kvm process spins the CPU 100% on the host.

[Bug 591489] Re: QEMU_AUDIO_DRV set to none by libvirtd in Lucid

2010-11-01 Thread nutznboltz
Instead of
QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=alsa /usr/bin/kvm.bin $@

use
QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=alsa exec /usr/bin/kvm.bin $@

also in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf

# QEMU implements an extension for providing audio over a VNC connection,
# though if your VNC client does not support it, your only chance for getting
# sound output is through regular audio backends. By default, libvirt will
# disable all QEMU sound backends if using VNC, since they can cause
# permissions issues. Enabling this option will make libvirtd honor the
# QEMU_AUDIO_DRV environment variable when using VNC.
#
# vnc_allow_host_audio = 0

So add

vnc_allow_host_audio = 1

but that will only suppress libvirt from adding QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=none

[Bug 229632] Re: ntpd should run niced

2010-02-10 Thread nutznboltz
We are limited a single NTP upstream source due to political reasons
outside our control and our Ubuntu ntpd loses sync periodically. I
tried a number of solutions but they all failed. When I tried setting
the ntpd server's nice value to negative eight it just works. Clearly
the stability of ntpd is improved by reducing the number of cases in
which ntpd gets preempted by scheduling.

While troubleshooting this I started keeping logs with:

while true ; do ntpq -p | grep name-of-upstream-time-source | logger -t
ntpq -p daemon.info; done

A pair of log entries showing loss of sync looks like:

time remote refid st t when
poll reach   delay   offset  jitter
===
2010-02-08:2010-02-08T21:53:00-05:00 *-.xxx.x 128.59.39.48  2 u   12
64  3770.5120.030   0.098
2010-02-08:2010-02-08T21:54:04-05:00  -.xxx.x 128.59.39.48  2 u   11
64  3770.5120.030   0.342

The * in the first entry indicates that the local Ubuntu host was
synchronized to the remote host. The second entry does not contain the
* since synchronization was lost.

By changing the nicelevel of the ntpd server process to negative eight
the logs no longer show any loss of synchronization.

[Bug 317401] Re: Wrong documentation for TLSCipherSuite

2009-10-28 Thread nutznboltz
Jaunty uses a newer libgnutls option. The slapd.conf man page (and
slapd-conf man page) still says you can find cipher names for
TLSCipherSuite (and olcTLSCipherSuite) by running gnutls-cli -l but
names output by that command are not accepted as options for
TLSCipherSuite. This is a bug in the documentation.

If you look through the libgnutls source code (file
gnutls26-2.4.2/lib/gnutls_priority.c function gnutls_priority_init() )
reveals option names.

As an example, this syntax is accepted by slapd if you use slapd.conf on
Jaunty:

TLSCipherSuite  SECURE256:SECURE128

but OpenLDAP on Hardy could use

TLSCipherSuite  TLS_RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:TLS_RSA_ARCFOUR_MD5

and now slapd on Jaunty will not start if you try that despite what the
manual page says about TLSCipherSuite accepting ciphers that gnutls-cli
-l outputs.

[Bug 317401] Re: Wrong documentation for TLSCipherSuite

2009-08-05 Thread nutznboltz
Can anyone explain what the syntax is for using more than one cipher
with gnutls TLSCipherSuite?

Using a colon separated list fails even when the individual items from
the list work as single ciphers. That is to say:

TLSCipherSuite FOO

works and

TLSCipherSuite BAR

works but

TLSCipherSuite FOO:BAR

results in slapd not starting up.
