The decision here is to: 1. Drop the kvp-daemon-init package 2. Break the kvp/vss components out of linux-tools-common 3. Add an init script that emits hyperv-detected via udev-bridge 4. Due to what needs to happen, can this wait till 14.04? 14.04 is an LTS and will ship in April with 5 years of support. 13.10 will only have 9 months of support. After fully understanding what is being asked here, it is subtaintial work. Specifically: 1. A new package will have to be generated from linux-extras and include upstart 2. That package will need a udeb to be included on the installer CD 3. It will need to be added to the cdimage While this may not sound like a lot of work, it is. And it is work that should be done early in the kernel cycle. The bigger problem here is that since the tools in question rely on a specfic ABI of the kernel, it is not easy to break it out. Basically we're talking about having to build a seperate package off the kernel package. I believe the fix here should be to use a udev rule.
