The package will build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/byobu/5.77-0ubuntu1.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository. I reproduced the issue on trusty, and byobu 5.77-0ubuntu1.1 fixed the issue for me.
