Public bug reported:

$ echo ä | mawk '{print length($0)}'
outputs 2. I expect 1. 

$ echo äo | mawk '{print match($0,"o")}'
outputs 3. I expect 2.

Probably this is due to the internal representation of UTF-8 characters;
mawk counts bytes instead of characters.
