Topic change is a bit misleading. '.local' domain works in Ubuntu 8.04,
otherwise you wouldn't be able to share music with your Mac friends or
detect printers or services on network or... It doesn't work in a way
Microsoft thinks it should. We can't support both, so we should decide
on one of those and provide documentation on how to make it work with
the other one.

Apple documented this problem, while Microsoft is playing 'I don't care'
game. IETF still didn't decide on which way to go.

Ah, sorry. I didn't see you post. Maybe likewise should check if
domainname is ends on .local and, if so, change /etc/nsswitch.conf. Yes,
ugly, but kind of solution...
