Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: whois

Greetings!

whois on Ubuntu 8.04 does not appear to know how to look up IPs in
recently-allocated ranges:

rtuc...@framboise:~$ whois 109.74.192.103
Unknown AS number or IP network. Please upgrade this program.
rtuc...@framboise:~$ apt-cache policy whois
whois:
  Installed: 4.7.24
  Candidate: 4.7.24
  Version table:
 *** 4.7.24 0
        500 http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

This address is in a RIPE range, and whois on 9.10 does find it with no
issue:

rtuc...@arrogant-bastard:~$ whois 109.74.192.103
% This is the RIPE Database query service.
[...]
rtuc...@arrogant-bastard:~$ apt-cache policy whois
whois:
  Installed: 4.7.34ubuntu2
  Candidate: 4.7.34ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 4.7.34ubuntu2 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Thanks! -rt
