[Bug 544216] Re: time synchronizes even when config is set to manual
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 322518 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/322518 I am setting this bug as a dup of bug 322518 -- older, and pretty much the same scenario. ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 322518 No obvious way to prevent ntpdate to be run when interface are brought up -- time synchronizes even when config is set to manual https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544216 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 544216] Re: time synchronizes even when config is set to manual
Indeed, and sorry for that. Anyway, the rest is still valid: ntpdate will be run when the NIC is brought up, and will adjust the time on your system. Now. I was on my way to close this bug as working as designed, but I am not as sure of that anymore. If you set the Time/Date to *manual*, then you are explicitly stating you do *not* want synchronisation to happen. So, by having ntpdate run when you bring up a network interface (and, by doing so, forcefully synchronise the clock) goes against what you set, and expected to happen. ** Changed in: ntp (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- time synchronizes even when config is set to manual https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544216 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 544216] Re: time synchronizes even when config is set to manual
By 'config' I referred to the 'Configuration' field described in the bug description. If there is a different "ntp(date) config", please instruct me how find it. I don't know what an interface is; below are the contents of my /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate file. #!/bin/sh set -e PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin # This is a heuristic: The idea is that if a static interface is brought # up, that is a major event, and we can put in some extra effort to fix # the system time. Feel free to change this, especially if you regularly # bring up new network interfaces. if [ "$METHOD" = static ]; then OPTS="-b" fi if [ "$METHOD" = loopback ]; then exit 0 fi # Check whether ntpdate was removed but not purged; it's useless to wait for # it in that case. if [ ! -x /usr/sbin/ntpdate-debian ] && [ -d /usr/sbin ]; then exit 0 fi ( # This is for the case that /usr will be mounted later. if [ -r /lib/udev/hotplug.functions ]; then . /lib/udev/hotplug.functions wait_for_file /usr/sbin/ntpdate-debian fi LOCKFILE=/var/lock/ntpdate-ifup # Avoid running more than one at a time if [ -x /usr/bin/lockfile-create ]; then lockfile-create $LOCKFILE lockfile-touch $LOCKFILE & LOCKTOUCHPID="$!" fi invoke-rc.d --quiet ntp stop >/dev/null 2>&1 || true /usr/sbin/ntpdate-debian -s $OPTS 2>/dev/null || : invoke-rc.d --quiet ntp start >/dev/null 2>&1 || true if [ -x /usr/bin/lockfile-create ] ; then kill $LOCKTOUCHPID lockfile-remove $LOCKFILE fi ) & -- time synchronizes even when config is set to manual https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544216 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 544216] Re: time synchronizes even when config is set to manual
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. Can you give us a sample ntp(date) config where this happens? Also, please be aware that ntpdate is set to run when an interface is brought up (see /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate). ** Changed in: ntp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: ntp (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- time synchronizes even when config is set to manual https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544216 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
