Using libvirt, we used this in our xml: video model type='vmvga' vram='9216' heads='1'/ ... /video and it works ok. Here is the xsession-errors from an attempt to start with unity-2d. dwm and fvwm start just fine. (I logged into a recovery console to install them). I think this is two bugs. When the OS is installed, unity-2d somewhat works with -vga vmware. (I can't get the menu from top left to come down, but most of the rest seems to work fine).
