[Bug 985489] Re: nova-compute stops processing compute.$HOSTNAME occasionally on libvirt
Description of this problem I have met this problem before. This bug is mainly caused by libvirt openstack-compute driver for libvirt. When you meet this problem. You may type command. $ virsh list --all If this command get stucked, you may face this problem. Another interesting appearance is that, if you type $ ps aux | grep libvirtd You may find two libvirtd service is running. Such as, .. /usr/sbin/libvirtd -d ../usr/sbin/libvirtd -d You kill one process, then libvirt will be ok. But sometimes later, the bug will come out again. Reasons of this problem Why this bug comes out? 1 This bug mainly caused by libvirt. The older verion of libvirt has multi-process/multi-threads lock bugs. Sometimes, when multi-processes access libvirt/libvirtd services by libvirt-api, this error will happen. Especially, if you access libvirt from differe process or threads, then this bug will come out. All accesses of libvirt will get stucked. 2 The driver of libvirt in OpenStack, access libvirt/libvirtd service too frequently. Especially, when you have a lot of vms running on libvirt. Solutions for this bug: 1 You have to update you libvirt/libvirtd services. My advice is your libvirt version should 0.9.13. 2 We may have some methods to get lower frequent of these accesses. I think I can fix this Bug. ^_^. [Bug 985489] Re: nova-compute stops processing compute.$HOSTNAME occasionally
@Rafi, Thanks for the suggestion. What you describe used to happen to me when we were using Oneiric's libvirtd (LP#903212). Since upgrading to Precise I haven't experienced the exact problem you're having. My issue is that libvirtd seems to temporarily stop responding, enough to block nova-compute, but it then responds to external commands later when I probe it. Looking through my monitoring logs, I can see that libvirtd occasionally stops responding, but not for long enough to generate an alert. I speculate that this is a timing issue, where libvirtd has stopped responding for a very limited period and during that moment nova-compute attempts to poll libvirtd? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nova in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/985489 Title: nova-compute stops processing compute.$HOSTNAME occasionally To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/985489/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

@Andrew, I'd like to try to reproduce this on a local cluster. Can you give me as much information as possible about what may have happened when this was triggered? [Bug 985489] Re: nova-compute stops processing compute.$HOSTNAME occasionally
@Serge, As mentioned in #1 the cluster is running Precise + Essex. Unfortunately I cannot consistently reproduce the problem, however the problem has been recurring approximately once per month. As mentioned in #5 I think that perhaps nova-compute is attempting to query libvirtd and libvirtd is not responding. Since the query doesn't seem to time out nova-compute hangs waiting for a response which will never come. I can only query the system after the problem occurs and I only have current state and log files to try infer the problem.
[Bug 985489] Re: nova-compute stops processing compute.$HOSTNAME occasionally
We ran into this issue as well and as you have correctly stated, it's a result of libvirtd becoming unresponsive. Thus far we have not been able to resolve the issue at its core but I can offer you a workaround. It's a simple script which calls virsh help (which will block indefinitely when the libvirtd process is unresponsive), wait 30 seconds for a response and restart libvirtd after the timeout has elapsed. Run it out of cron every 5 minutes or whatever you're comfortable doing. https://github.com/metacloud/openstack- tools/blob/master/libvirt/check_fix_libvirtd By no means is this a fix but it'll mitigate the issue for you operationally for now. In every situation we've had the script trigger, nova-compute recovers as you would expect, without needing a restart. Hope that helps.
