[Bug 249824] Re: [intrepid] bind9/named IPv6 unusable

2008-11-11 Thread Paul Mullen
I hate to keep saying this but all IPv6 only machines are completely
broken, as they cannot do DNS lookups over IPv6. It also means that dual
stack machines that have only IPv6 resolvers are broken.

Re: [Bug 293539] Re: package samba failed to install/upgrade: Conflicts found! Please edit `/etc/samba/smb.conf' and sort them out manually.

2008-11-11 Thread tota
Hi Steve.
Thank you for reminding me. I edited /etc/samba/smb.conf accordingly. I
had solved the problem nevertheless.
I'm thinking that it would be nice if we could have a special folder
keeping backups of changed configuration files for samba or other
packages. All the instalation would go without any questions. At the
end, the system would ask all the questions, presenting the differences,
and the user could replace/maintain or reconcile with manual supervision
at his/her choice. After that, the system would restart all services
modified. Even if the user got confused he/she could go to the update
log folder and get back the correct version of the configuration file.
We could have un update log telling diferences line by line and pointing
to the previous and new config. For example
file /log/update8.10/log.txt:

#Section [SAMBA]
...
Applying update from version 1 to version 2
...
Configuration file /etc/samba/smb.conf
saved to /log/update8.10/old/etc/samba/smb.conf
#Changing configuration
...
changed line 55 from:
wins support = yes
to
; wins support = no
...
Changed file saved to /etc/samba/smb.conf and to
/log/update8.10/new/etc/samba/smb.conf

What do you think of this idea?
Cheers,
Antonio

 tota,

From the files you attached, it looks like after the failure you again
configured samba-common and chose the 'use the maintainer's version'

As for the reason why a conflict was found when you upgraded, it appears
that some of your customizations to the file overlapped with changes
made to the default config file between Ubuntu 8.04 and Ubuntu 8.10.
I'm afraid that there's no good solution for this in the general case,
and the solution for this bug is precisely what you did: accept one of
the other options for handling this config file, and then fixing up the
config file by hand if necessary. So I'm marking this bug as 'wontfix'.

Please do continue to file bugs about problems you find in Ubuntu; the
feedback is definitely helpful since we want to make upgrades as smooth

BTW, it looks like several options fell out of your smb.conf when you

[Bug 54180] Re: [rfe] sshd ought to support 'none' cipher

Problem is that SSH performance is still 10-30x slower with encryption.
On a 3.6GHz Intel Penryn with plenty of memory bandwidth [1], we see
around 67MB/s - 109MB/s [2]. Moving from 'secret' aes-128-cbc (the
default) to 'top-secret' aes-256-cbc (the most secure) is almost free.

Moving from MD5 hashing reduces performance too [3].

[Bug 297012] [NEW] package bacula-director-mysql 2.4.2-1ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-11-11 Thread Chip Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bacula

On a Hardy server I had finally been able to get bacula 2.2.8 to install by
having mysql up and running first before the bacula install. On this Intrepid
laptop I was trying to install bacula 2.4.2 for testing. I had tried the bacula
install on a virgin, new system install and it had failed with a similar
message. This time after (I thought) cleaned out all the leftover bacula dregs
I installed mysql-server first and then tried to install bacula. I first made
sure that there was no leftover bacula database with:
mysqladmin -u root -p drop bacula
to which the system replied it knew nothing about bacula (so good so far).

When I tried to do an install with:
sudo apt-get install bacula
it did not bring up the terminal queries for things like db administrator
passwords, database names or database passwords. It simply failed and hung the
whole system with it. After a forced reboot the system came here. The bacula-fd
and bacula-sd daemons are running but not the director. The
/etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf is missing. The bacula-director entry in
/etc/init.d seems to be there. The mysql server is running but there is not a
bacula database.

I would play with this some more if I could figure out how to REALLY get all of
the bacula stuff off the machine. Reinstalling the system from scratch gets old.
- Does anyone know how to, absolutely/positively, get rid of bacula off the
system like it had never been there before?
- Anybody have any idea of how to install bacula on an Intrepid system? I've
never been able to make it succeed.

[Bug 222416] Re: package update-manager 1:0.87.24 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2008-11-11 Thread DrC
Sorry - I can't say at this distance. The process was a bit stressful,
it is several months ago, and the only reliable information is the notes
I made at the time, all of which are above.

My initial post says it all, really. Sorry I can't add to it. When
asked which config to use, I took the (on screen?) option to look at the
differences, then made a bit of a mess of going back to the select
screen and got told there was a problem.

From general life experience - no special reference to this episode - I
might have double-clicked the Back button, thereby inadvertently
clicking something in the same place on the next screen, or maybe it
just didn't 'Go Back' properly. I didn't know for sure then, and with
the passage of time a false memory is as likely as any useful
information...

Sorry :(

Chris

[Bug 297025] [NEW] smbclient 3.2.3 does not handle the -N option consistently with past versions.

2008-11-11 Thread David
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbclient

The -N flag, which suppresses the login prompt, and is used by
backuppc's template configuration file /etc/backuppc/config.pl in the
strings $Conf{SmbClientFullCmd}, $Conf{SmbClientIncrCmd}, and
$Conf{SmbClientRestoreCmd}, which do full backups, incremental backups
and restores respectively. Beginning with version 3.2.3, smbclient has
stopped passing the backup user's password to authenticate with Window's
LAN Manager, causing backups and restores to fail when the -N flag is
specified (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/backuppc/+bug/283652).

The purpose of the flag is to suppress the login prompt when the
password has already been passed, and is certainly not supposed to
prevent the password from being passed.

I have edited my /etc/backuppc/config.pl to make backups work, because I
am guessing that the prompt is automatically suppressed when the
password has already been passed. However, it would save many users a
great deal of time trying to figure out what broke backuppc if the prior
behavior of smbclient were restored (as well as no longer requiring the
-N fag if the password has been passed).
