[Bug 894608] Re: Implementing a bridge slows 10G network

2012-07-31 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Mike Imelfort, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test
the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel
version specifically you tested and remove the 'needs-upstream-testing'
tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the
tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the
'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the tag: 'kernel-unable-
to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 700492] Re: ntp complains about ipv6 errors every 5 minutes

2013-08-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: ntp
-
- I believe this is a duplicate of bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/569919, which has a status
of "Fix Released"
- But I have the fix, and the problem still occurs.

Every 5 minutes, ntpd complains about being unable to create a socked on
an ipv6 address. I'm running a new installation of Maverick 10.10. Here
  is my syslog:

  I'm running ntp 1:4.2.4p8+dfsg-1ubuntu6.
FYI, here is the output of md5sum /usr/sbin/ntp*. I think these are the
latest packages:

  42415ef5eb851dabe9d06a67cf992d28 /usr/sbin/ntpd

  7d4b58d1da97ba46ba8eeab08b345a44 /usr/sbin/ntp-wait

This is a brand new installation. The sequence of steps to reproduce
  this are:

  1. Install Maverick on a RAID 1 system. Separate / and /home partition.
  2. Install Updates
  3. Install graphics card hardware driver
  4. Download ifenslave. Configure bonding. Set static IP address.
  5. Install NTP

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: qemu-kvm
-

Some TCP operations receive unexpected reset (RST) packets when executed on
the guest. I can see these RST packets via
Wireshark but can't explain their source. This breaks certain (most)
networking on the guest.

I uncovered this when some 'git clone' operations failed with "Broken
Pipe" in the guests. I've been able to reproduce the same failures
using scp and 'svn checkout'. The failure occurs 80-90% of the time and
'svn checkout' seems to be the quickest to fail. The same operations on
  the host are always successful.

My setup is a Lucid amd64 host with two guests (Lucid and Hardy, both
i386, using kvm). Networking seems to mostly work. I can maintain
persistent ssh connections to the guest and some networking operations
from the guest (ie. ping) never fail. However, the git-clone/scp/svn-
checkout operations fail almost all the time. I've tried this with both
virtio and e1000 drivers with no difference.

This may be similar to some of the behavior reported in bug 584048 but
not the final patch referenced in comment 27. I built a custon deb
including the upstream patch for testing and it had no effect.

[Bug 1213879] Re: kernel fault ovs 1.10.1 + linux 3.11

2013-08-20 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
James Page, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an
update is available for your BIOS (2.55). If you update to this, does it
change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 782092] Re: ssh server extremly unresponsive

2012-04-21 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Martin Konopka, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If
so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD
images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a
supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal).
It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to
this report.

apport-collect -p linux

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not
boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1556740] [NEW] Unable to connect to share unless "Guess access" is checked

2016-03-13 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Public bug reported:

What is expected to happen:

On the Ubuntu 16.04 samba server with hostname HOSTNAME log in as first
user created when installing USERNAME with password PASSWORD > create a
new folder via nautilus (no gksudo) called test > secondary click test >
Properties > tab Local Network Share > check "Share this folder" > Share
name: test > other checkboxes unchecked > click button "Create Share"

On another Ubuntu 16.04 client click Places > Network > Windows Network >
WORKGROUP > HOSTNAME > test > in the new connection window it notes at top:
Password required for share test on HOSTNAME

to the right of "Connect As" click radio button "Registered User" > put
in Username field USERNAME > put in field Domain WORKGROUP > put in
field Password PASSWORD > click radio button Forget password immediately
> Connect

and it does so.

What happens instead is the connection window comes back up, but this
time the "Connect As" radio button is now on Anonymous (Default) and
everything else is grayed out. Hitting the X to close the window
intermittently shows:

Unable to access location
Failed to mount Windows share: Invalid argument

The only way to allow the share to be connected is if one clicks on the
server the checkbox "Guest access (for people without a user account)".

This prevents easily implementing secure and authenticated data
transfers between server and client.

[Bug 1438045] [NEW] Samba shared printer keeps prompting clients for username/password

2015-03-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Public bug reported:

This is a regression from Utopic, and Trusty.

With a USB attached printer, when going through the New Printer dialogue
in Ubuntu, it prompts for a username and password, despite the guest ok
= yes configuration being performed for both [printers] and [print$].

With Windows 8.1 it won't even see the printer when attempting to
connect with an IP address.

The printer prints locally successfully, and the firewall is off.

[Bug 1440420] [NEW] bridge-utils doesn't work in Utopic

2015-04-04 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Public bug reported:

Followed the Bridging guide verbatim at
https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/serverguide/network-configuration.html did not
create a working bridged network:
sudo apt-get -y install bridge-utils
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
#START
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto br0
iface br0 inet static
address 192.168.1.12
network 192.168.1.0
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
bridge_ports eth0 wlan0
bridge_fd 9
bridge_hello 2
bridge_maxage 12
bridge_stp off
#END

sudo ifup br0

The 192.168.1.12 IP address was not consumed by another device at the
time of attempting this. This is preventing me from instituting a wired
> wireless USB dongle > WAP environment.

[Bug 1426589] Re: tc class statistics rates are all zero after upgrade to Trusty

2015-04-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Visual Echo, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are
irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into
the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test
the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where XY and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:

Ubuntu 14.04, all updates done as of 23/5/2014
  Kernel : Linux 3.13.0-24-generic
  Qemu : 1.7.1 and 2.0.0 tested
Tested using both Xeon 5620 and 5520 processors, 48GB RAM.

- Anywhere from 20 minutes for 3+ hours after booting Windows guests become
unstable. Guest appear to freeze intermittently (VNC console unresponsive,
network pings dropped to guest, frozen IO) for 20-60 seconds at a time which
repeats constantly every few minutes and guests do not recover unless QEMU is
killed and the guest is started again. Whilst the guest is frozen CPU usage of
the QEMU process jumps to 100-150%.

[Bug 273930] Re: oosplash.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in splash_create_window() under KVM

2011-02-05 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Confirmed in Ubuntu 11.04 virt-manager guest, LibreOffice Calc, in a
Ubuntu 10.10 host. The impact is minimal as the Calc file opens fine
anyways, despite the crash.

WORKAROUND: Run Calc from the Terminal with the -nologo switch:

[Bug 977391] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#8 stuck for 61s! [kvm:*] in lucid

2013-09-02 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Rahul, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest server release of
Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://releases.ubuntu.com/raring/
.

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1010854] Re: linux-crashdump not producing coredump nor rebooting

2013-12-12 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Christoph Paasch, as per
http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdHome/?sp4ts.oid=4096169&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3DswEnvOID%253D4060%257CswLang%253D%257Caction%253DlistDriver&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken#BIOS
an update is available for your BIOS (F.0F). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see

.

Thank you for your understanding.

  Hello,

since Ubuntu Precise, linux-crashdump isn't working anymore for me.
When I trigger a crash with
  echo 'c' > /proc/sysrq-trigger

the machine freezes. I see the disk-light blinking for a short time. But
then, the host does not reboot automatically, and no dump-file is in
  /var/crash.

With Oneiric everything worked as expected.

-
How can I provide more debugging info to you?

  Thanks,
  Christoph

[Bug 1010854] Re: [HP EliteBook 8540p] linux-crashdump not producing coredump nor rebooting

2013-12-15 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Christoph Paasch, thank you for providing the requested information. No
need to further apport-collect unless requested specifically.

Despite this, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not
the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've
tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically
you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the
following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1010854] Re: [HP EliteBook 8540p] linux-crashdump not producing coredump nor rebooting

2013-12-15 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Christoph Paasch, given the problem is a regression going from Oneiric
to Precise, it wouldn't hurt to bisect the kernel via
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection to shed more light on the
issue. Be careful as the proprietary nvidia drivers many not work out
using the mainline, or previous Ubuntu kernels.

[Bug 700492] Re: ntp complains about ipv6 errors every 5 minutes

2013-12-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
John Kounis, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.
