[Bug 84782] Re: slow samba transfer speed to/from windows machines

2008-08-28 Thread Chris
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 46081 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/46081

I too am having the same issues. 1 computer running Ubuntu Server 8.04,
with ubuntu-desktop installed over top for gui purposes, and one running
xp SP2.

On the Ubuntu machines, I can get speeds of 1.6-1.8 MEGABYTES down from
the internet..

But transffering files from Ubuntu to Windows, or vice versa, I'm
getting around 350KILOBYTES if I'm lucky. I've tried every combination
of socket options that I could think of, and have seen no increase in
speed. I'm using the onboard RTL8100C nic..

I checked out my samba logs a bunch, and see this: [2008/08/28 22:15:53, 0]
auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_users(758)
  create_builtin_users: Failed to create Users

A bunch of times, but it does not appear to effect my ability to connect
to and browse my windows machines..

If anyone has made any progress on this, I'd love to know.

Something interesting to note:

I was playing around with virtual box, and couldn't get the builtin
drive sharing to work with a windows xp guest operating system, so I
mounted my share in windows using samba..and on the SAME computer, I was
experiencing the dismal speeds that I see going from my Ubuntu machine
to my external windows machine. When I did get the virtual box drive
sharing working again, speeds increased drastically. Something that was
going to take 35 minutes to transfer took 2.

[Bug 424789] [NEW] PHP random segfaults on session_start();

2009-09-05 Thread Chris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5

Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

libapache2-mod-php5:
  Installed: 5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu2
  Candidate: 5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu2

Localhost sites including MySqlAdmin are randomly producing;

fault (11)

in the apache logs. When this occurs the browser either reports no data
or prompts to download the php file (an empty file). Testing indicates
the fault occurs when the php file calls session_start().

[Bug 424789] Re: PHP random segfaults on session_start();

2009-09-06 Thread Chris
This bug appears to be upstream, it has also been reported in Gentoo;

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=276583

Switching off session encryption in suhosin bypasses the issue for now.
Workaround is to edit;

/etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/suhosin.ini

and add;

suhosin.session.encrypt = off

then restart Apache.

[Bug 424789] Re: PHP random segfaults on session_start();

2009-09-10 Thread Chris
Hi Chuck,

When I first heard about suhosin causing the problem, my first attempt
to work-around the problem was to uninstall the php-suhosin package. But
this made no difference to the results/segfaults I was seeing.

Got me confused, but anything that fixes this is good news.

[Bug 424789] Re: PHP random segfaults on session_start();

2009-09-11 Thread Chris
Niels,

Did you try editing;

/etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/suhosin.ini

as I suggested and

/etc/php5/conf.d/suhosin.ini

as Gustavo suggested?

You might need to modify both, since I've noticed that i've also got
encryption as off in both files. I probably changed the php5/conf.d
version in previous attempts to work-around this.

Change both files to have encryption off and you should be ok.

I could be wrong here, but I think the file Gustavo mentioned is related
to the php5-suhosin package. But I believe the PHP5 modules being
shipped also include a suhosin patch which is were the php5/conf.d
version of the suhosin.ini comes in.

Confusing situation if we have two versions of suhosin on the go :(
One patched into PHP5 as well as a separate installed package.

[Bug 621380] [NEW] bad output from check_linux_raid

2010-08-20 Thread chris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nagios-plugins

The check_linux_raid script is slightly broken. If you do not pass an MD
device, it should check all MD devices on the host. However, upon
running the check, it outputs:

Use of uninitialized value within %status in pattern match (m//) at
./check_linux_raid line 82, MDSTAT line 11.
Use of uninitialized value within %status in pattern match (m//) at
./check_linux_raid line 91, MDSTAT line 11.
OK md0 status=[]. md1 status=[]. md2 active with no status information.

The first two lines are invalid output for a nagios script.

There is a bug in Debian's tracker (#579049), but I don't see one here.
The fix is a simple patch (attached).

Does this only happen in the embedded perl mode of nagios? Also what

I don't believe I'm using the embedded perl version.

[Bug 1119792] [NEW] Munin does not generate the correct URL in munin-cgi-html

2013-02-08 Thread Chris Bergstresser
Public bug reported:

Okay, so I spun up a Ubuntu 12.10 box, and installed Munin 2.0.2 on
it from the repository. It looks like munin-cgi-html is installed and
working correctly.
However, all the graphs are broken. munin-cgi-graph isn't getting
called, and it looks like that's because none of the image urls are
formed correctly. The image paths in the HTML look like:

  http://myserver.com/basename/hostname.com/apache_accesses-day.png

This despite having html_strategy cgi, graph_strategy cgi, and
cgiurl_graph /cgi-bin/munin-cgi-graph in munin.conf.

So Munin is still broken out of the box on Ubuntu 12.10, as far as I
can tell.

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-02-22 Thread Chris Cormier
I've been able to confirm the same as the OP regarding the different
Ubuntu distrubutions as guests. These tests should help ruleout/pinpoint
the kernel and modules.

Using the same 12.04 hypervisors for all tests.

Testing different guests I was able to determine.
-Lucid with default kernel is NOT affected.
-Precise with default kernel is affected.

The test...
I tared up each guest kernels and dropped them into the oposing distribution.

Results
-Lucid with Precise Kernel is NOT affected.
-Precise with Lucid Kernel is affected.

Conclusion
12.04 Precise distribution guest is affected regardless of the kernel used.

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-04-09 Thread Chris Cormier
@serge-hallyn
I'm using Netapp filer in c-mode for NFS storage, mount options are:
(rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,hard,nfsvers=3,tcp,intr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,addr=x.x.x.x).

However, I can reproduce this on a a host with or without NFS, using
local disk, qcow2, or raw images and the OP was using FC SAN.

I've tried to reproduce your success by buiding a new VM the latest
preciese 12.04.02 with updates, but i have been unsuccessful. It happens
immediately after the restore 100% of the time.

The quickest test i've found is this, it helps aid in your reproduction as it's
an immediate indication.
-Get/Compile lmbench
-build it
-run
# touch tmpfile
# for i in null read write open ; do sleep 1; ./lat_syscall -N 1 $i tmpfile;
done
- the latencies for read/write generally increase up to 2x, and the open/close
by about 30% post restore.

[Bug 986973] Re: Facter bug causes puppet to become a zombie

2013-06-11 Thread Chris Abbey
Just a note that after this was WONTFIX'd, puppet labs moved the
upstream bug back from 2.x to 1.7.0. Perhaps a reconsideration is in
order?

[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools

Yes, when I originally opened a bug on this we were using headless
rackmount servers. I would imagine that is the dominant use case.

Please reconsider the importance - it is a quite annoying bug (at
least to me).

[Bug 888662] Re: Web browsers should share the cache

Please don't do that. Suddenly creating bugs like this against a
bazillion packages spams lots of people, and really isn't cool
(especially when you haven't discussed your idea with anybody, and there
isn't really much hope you'll ever find anybody to do this for you)

  Package naming:

Platform (though they are obviously reinforcing connectedness to hadoop itself.)

Q: Re: Kerberos. We may need to really look into this as this will end up

have time to get it all done in this cycle. Just my thoughts.
MultiArch native libraries in hdp-hadoop package - should not must.

[Bug 933480] [NEW] Picks hmac-md5 over hmac-sha1

2012-02-16 Thread Chris West
Public bug reported:

The OpenSSH client defaults to picking hmac-md5, which is based on the
demonstrably insecure MD5 algorithm:

faux@wilf:~% ssh -v localhost true 21 | grep hmac
debug1: kex: server-client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none
debug1: kex: client-server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none

MD5 has had practical vulnerabilities for around eight years, and its
use is highly discouraged. SHA1 is a supported alternative, and is
supported by the packaged openssh-server, and many other ssh
implementations.

MD5 is selected as man ssh_config suggests the default algorithms are, in order
of preference (most preferred first):

hmac-md5,hmac-sha1,umac...@openssh.com,hmac-ripemd160,hmac-sha1-96,hmac-md5-96

Please append:
MACs
hmac-sha1,hmac-md5,umac...@openssh.com,hmac-ripemd160,hmac-sha1-96,hmac-md5-96

...to /etc/ssh/ssh_config, such that the client will prefer SHA-1:

faux@wilf:~% ssh -v localhost true 21 | grep hmac
debug1: kex: server-client aes128-ctr hmac-sha1 none
debug1: kex: client-server aes128-ctr hmac-sha1 none

This should have no compatibility concerns as MD5 is still a supported
algorithm.

Note that non-privileged users can override this setting either way on a
per-connection basis by specifying MACs in ~/.ssh/config.

For precise, openssh-5.9 supports even more secure algorithms, so the line
should perhaps be:

[Bug 954692] Re: cannot detach volume from terminated instance

2012-03-15 Thread Chris Behrens
I think removing that block of code makes sense.

However, a few lines below, I would add a try/except around the call to
self.driver.destroy(). It looks like it could raise if the instance is
not created at the driver level, which could be the case for an instance
that's in ERROR state.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-juju-charm-testing] Juju: automated testing of charms

[mark-mims] basic charm tests... just test install hooks for now: DONE

  Session notes:
  Welcome to Ubuntu Developer Summit!
  #uds-p #track #topic
  put your session notes here
Requirements of automated testing of charms:
  * LET'S KEEP IT SIMPLE! :-)
  * Detect breakage of a charm relating to an interface
  * Identification of individual change which breaks a given relationship
  * Maybe implement tests that mock a relation to ensure implementers are
compliant
  * Test dependent charms when a provider charm changes
  * Run test NxN of providers and requirers so all permutations are sane
(_very_ expensive, probably impossible)
  * Run testing against multiple environment providers (EC2/OpenStack/BareMetal)
  * Notify maintainers when the charm breaks, rather than waiting for polling
  * Verify idempotency of hooks
  * Tricky to _verify_, and not an enforced convention at the moment, so
not sure
  * be able to specify multiple scenarios
  * For functional tests, they are in fact exercising multiple charms. Should
those sit
within the charms, or outside since it's in fact exercising the whole graph?
    * The place for these composed tests seem to be the stack
  * As much data as possible should be collected about the running tests so
that a broken
charm can be debugged and fixed.
  * Provide rich artifacts for failure analysis
  * Ideally tests will be run in lock step mode, so that breaking charms can
be individually
identified, but this is hard because changes may be co-dependent
  * It would be nice to have interface-specific tests that can run against any
charms that
implement such interfaces. In addition to working as tests, this is also a
pragmatic
    way to document the interface.
  * support gerrit-like topics?  (What's that? :-) i.e., change-sets (across
different branches)
  * We need a way to know which charms trigger which tests
  * Keep it simple
  * James mentioned he'd like to have that done by Alpha 1 (December) so that
he can take
that into account for the OpenStack testing effort.
  ACTIONS:
  [niemeyer] spec
  [james-page] add openstack tests

Proposal below is too complicated, rejected (Kept for posterity)

  Proposal:

Each charm has a tests directory

  Under tests, you have executables:

__install__ -- test to run after charm is installed with no relations

  Then two directories:
  provides/
  requires/

These directories have a directory underneath for each interface
provided/required. Those directories contain executables to run.

The test runner follows the following method:

  deploy charm
  wait for installed status
run __install__ script, FAIL if exits non-zero
  destroy service
for interface in provides ; do
calculate graph of all charms in store which require interface and all of
its dependency combinations
deploy requiring charm w/ dependencies and providing service
  add-relation between requiring/providing
for test in provides/interface ; do
run test with name of deployed requiring service
for interface in requires ; do
repeat process above with provides/requires transposed

Each commit to any branch in charm store will queue up a run with only
that change applied, none that have been done after it, and record
  pass/fail

[Blueprint servercloud-p-pushing-cloud] Pushing Ubuntu to the Cloud

+ [utlemming] Upstream changes to live-build: POSTPONED
+ [utlemming] Stand-up a public glance server: POSTPONED

Rationale: There is significant value to both the community and paid
customers in having Canonical own and maintaining images on major cloud-
  vendors.

  Assumptions:
    * There are literally thousands of public Ubuntu public images; each public
image is slightly different and is confusing to customers.
    * Owning our own images will help to reduce vendor customization and make
for a consistent experience across different cloud-vendors.
    * There will be new major cloud-vendors that will want the official images,
or on which we want to publish images.
    * The current system was design for publishing images to one vendors in
multiple regions
    * Amazon AWS is growing with new services and new regions, which may stress
the current system

  UDS Deciusions:
To provide multiple ways for different cloud vendors to consume the official
Ubuntu images. The four methods decided on are:
  1. Push Ubuntu images to all EC2 regions
  2. Provide a public glance server for OpenStack Deployments. OpenStack to
make changes to support multiple glance registry servers.
  3. Provide a sync script for people to pull the latest images for OpenStack
  4. Provide a sync script for people to pull the latest images for Eucalpytus

[Bug 990759] Re: package slapd 2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-05-02 Thread Chris Carroux
Hello Adam,

Yes, this is the same system that encountered Bug #990751. The
difference is, that report was generated during the upgrade process from
11.10 to 12.04, whereas this bug was encountered after I restarted,
purged the slapd package, then tried to do a fresh reinstallation of it.
Hope that helps.

Chris

[Bug 994199] [NEW] vmbuilder and /etc/sudoers template missing sudo group support

2012-05-03 Thread Chris Samaritoni
Public bug reported:

I noticed when creating a 12.04 VM with vmbuilder, the template file
/etc/vmbuilder/ubuntu/sudoers.tmpl that is used to generate the
/etc/sudoers appears to be quite outdated. From my understanding on
12.04 you are supposed to use the sudo group for putting users in, to
allow sudo access and admin was just hanging around for backward
compatibility. The template file does not include a sudo entry in the
/etc/sudoers

Current template:

# /etc/sudoers
#
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#
# See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file.
# Defaults

# Host alias specification

# User alias specification

# Cmnd alias specification

rootALL=(ALL) ALL

# Members of the admin group may gain root privileges

I modified the /etc/vmbuilder/ubuntu/sudoers.tmpl to match a typical
phyical install (ie, from CD) and my issue was solved.

Modified template file:

If and when the template is updated, when you supply the default user to
add to the system when you build the VM, they should be added to sudo
group and not the admin group.

[Blueprint servercloud-q-tomcat7] Promote Apache Tomcat 7 to main

2012-06-07 Thread Chris Johnston
Blueprint changed by Chris Johnston:

Whiteboard changed:
  UDS Discussion Points:

  NO SESSION NEEDED

  User Stories:

Frank has been using the Ubuntu provided/Canonical supported tomcat6
package for the last couple of years but he now has a requirement to
deploy applications on Tomcat 7 whilst still ensuring his environment is
kept up-to-date and secure. By deploying Ubuntu 12.10 he can a) easily
transition his existing Tomcat 6 environments and b) support new Tomcat
  7 requirements.

  Assumptions:

  - tomcat7 package should provide a suitable transition path from tomcat6.
  - tomcat7 does not introduce any new significant dependency requirements.
  - Reverse-Depends on tomcat6 can be transitioned to use tomcat7.
  - libservlet2.5-java packages will be retained in some form for source compat.
  - tomcat6 will be dropped from the archive, not deprecated (TBD late in
cycle).

  Test Plan:

  1) Upgrade Path

Installed Ubuntu 12.04 with tomcat6; upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10; tomcat6 is
replaced with tomcat7 and all web applications and configuration is
transitioned to the new package locations.

  2) Charm

Juju charm for tomcat will not support tomcat6 for Ubuntu 12.10.
tomcat7 will be deployed as the only option. Successful charm testing
  of the tomcat7 charm.

  3) New Install

A user is able to select the 'Tomcat' task selection from the Ubuntu
Server ISO and post reboot has a working tomcat7 deployment. Automated
ISO testing will also validate this against every daily image.

  Release Note:
-
- Ubuntu 12.10 provides Apache Tomcat 7 as the default, supported version
- of Tomcat. Existing installations should be automatically upgraded from
- Apache Tomcat 6.

2012-08-08 Thread Chris Roberts
I am getting the same error:

I have set slapd.conf logging to debug, and the main error seems to be:

But I cannot see any other errors.

[Bug 1032721] Re: package slapd 2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-08-08 Thread Chris Roberts
I solved my problem by setting chmod 444 on the certificate and key
files, after which apt-get -f install worked perfectly. I had
previously set chmod 400.

I assume this problem was just waiting for slapd to be restarted before
biting me, and it just happened to be this update that triggered it.

My understanding was that 400 was the correct setting for the keyfile,
but I will do more research.

My sincere apologies if my posts have been a distraction from the OP's
problem.

[Bug 1057054] [NEW] poor performance after upgrade to Precise

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

I had a Lucid x64 server working with a Dell MD3000i with 4 paths and
worked as expected. I added the prio rdac line to the conf file, then
upgraded to Precise, and removed the old mpath_rdac line and reboot one
more time, just to be sure. I did this based on a section in
https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/serverguide.pdf

as a sanity check test, I'm doing 'pv /dev/mapper/dellsas1
/dev/null' (friendly names enabled). On Lucid i'd get about 100MB/s
After upgrading to Precise I get an almost solid 768kB/s. If I instead
use the 4 underlying /dev/sd* devices, 2 give errors as expected, and 2
run at about 100MB/s as expected so iscsi seems to be working correctly
and multipath not.

via lsmod? scsi_dh_rdac is loaded. Does it need to be in the initramfs
even if I'm not booting off it?

doing so does fix the performance, but it is also counter-intuitive.
Shouldn't the multipath driver read the conf file and load the needed
modules before finding anything?

[Bug 1057054] Re: poor performance after upgrade to Precise

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Weiss
My devices are on iscsi, and I'm not booting off them. They are not
connected until after the root goes live and network comes active, via
normal means.

I never manually loaded scsi_dh_rdac before, it's not in my initrd nor
my modules files. It loaded automatically somehow. Why isn't it
loading automatically earlier? What loaded it if multipath driver
didn't? other drivers load child drivers, why can't multipath?

I never found that html server guide in my searching and it is helpful.
The PDF I only found after failing a couple times. Other software
presents prompts and links when config formats change, or even changes
them for you, it's become expected, multipath should do it too. The
local manpage for multipath.conf still has prio_callout and not prio
documented, and has zero mention of having to manually load drivers.

Whether this a bug in how the drivers get loaded, or how the
documentation is presented, or how upgrade transition is handled isn't
that relevant, it's still a bug. It's Lucid to Precise upgrade
regression bug. it's not smooth and it's not even easy to find why it's
failing.

If the upgrade had presented me with a screen saying the config and
driver loading formats have changed, and that html link, I'd have
figured it out and we wouldn't be here.

[Bug 1057054] Re: poor performance after upgrade to Precise

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Weiss
But it survive a reboot. several in fact. I always reboot after major
config changes to reduce the chance of a 2am phone call after a power
outage. I don't lightly file bugs, it's 3 days and 4 OS re-installs to
get me here. This was working on Lucid, and required additional setup
for Precise and I found documentation difficult to find. It's
repeatable, I've been repeating it all week, both on upgrades and clean
installs.

Did lucid also use scsi_dh_rdac? I had no issues there. Something
changed. I wish i could help find out what. Is there a debug flag
and/or log file I can send?

[Bug 1057054] Re: poor performance after upgrade to Precise

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Weiss
after the upgrade and initial reboot, I change the config file and
verified multipath -ll was as I expected, then rebooted and did the pv
test. I did nothing else between my first posting and the reply
verifying lsmod, so yes, it was loaded on reboot.

I have both controllers in the md3000i, and each has 2 ports. a LUN can
be on either controller, and active/active on that one controller, with
the other controller as standby. I also have luns on it used by esxi,
and the RR paths appear to be the same.

I did not check which driver got loaded on lucid, and the dell docs are
really kinda all over the place so I was trying to ignore them. rdac
did seem to be what was happening based on how multipath -ll showed
things, and I did see roughly equal traffic on 2 nics. In my first
attempt with Precise I did initially see the ping-ponging you mention,
before I understood how to apply rdac configs. With Lucid I put the
rdac config in right from the start and did not see that behavior.

is it possible the old mpath_prio_rdac callout was loading the driver
early in the process? I was not aware of scsi_dh_rdac's existence until
this thread, so I have no explanation of how it's getting loaded when
you think it shouldn't be.

it's nice to see the config codified, I'll have to experiment with that
some. thanks for that info.

and similar with the first 12.04 boot, except the owned/unowned lines
are intermixed with the scsi attaches instead of all at the end, so
that's different.

as far as active/active, I am seeing 140MB/s writes, so RR is working
well enough. I think the MD3000 processor is the bottleneck. it's not
renowned for being super fast. I did try adjusting the rr_weight and
rr_min_io, but it doens't seems to have changed much. Defaults are
working well. I'm not running Jumbo frames yet, so maybe that'll help
some.

[Blueprint servercloud-r-juju-charmhelper2] Charm Helper 2 - Declarative Charming

2012-11-03 Thread Chris Johnston
Blueprint changed by Chris Johnston:

Whiteboard changed:
We've learned a lot since the creation of charm helper. Debian packagers
took 7 iterations before boiling all of debhelper's goodness into a
declarative system. We can learn from them, and get there in our second
iteration.
  Discussion:
Charm-helper is not easily discoverable, poorly documented, and not as
awesome as it could be.
  dannf likes to write makefiles
  sources list
  config settings with meaning
want common things to go in a declarative charm
get rid of copied lib files/folder
Maintain charm-helper seperately from juju, calling it at the top of the hook
vs included in juju trunk
What happens during upgrade-charm or if a pakcage gets removed?
Juju can't help with leader election across units of a service, but
charm-helper could)
- Work items:
+ Work:
  - describe how to handle lifecycle changes for packages in
charm-helper/packages (also thinkof: upgrade-charm)
  - install packages
  - debconf preseeding too
  - templating and/or building config files with dotd/concat partials
(erb_template _and_ cheetah_template helpers)?
  - remote_files
  - deploy from {distro,ppa,upstream?} ?
  - Manage config files (dynamic, static, etc)
  - Sanitize relation settings (potential risk of SQL Ejection, highjacking,
terror)
  - Plugin based for easy extension of charm-helper
  - leader election (perhaps somewhere other than charmhelper)
  - private files (SSL certs) ... no clue...
  - Collaborate on files that no charm owns

That is your problem. It is already reported as bug #583044 (Looks like
you have an error in your /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf that prevents it
from starting up. If you can't fix that, I'd suggest you purge the
existing configuration completely (sudo apt-get purge bacula-director-

[Bug 592610] Re: Shared folders (through Samba) when following instructions sometimes does not work correctly

2011-05-02 Thread Chris Routh
I am posting to comment that not only has this bug carried through to
10.10, it has now continued into the 11.04 base. I reinstalled Ubuntu
11.04 four times on one system and the issue occurred every time. As a
tech that promotes Ubuntu, I find it embarrassing that a fix has not yet
been implemented in over a year.

[Bug 787755] [NEW] Samba does not notice added or removed CUPS printers

2011-05-24 Thread Chris Siebenmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Our environment uses a CUPS server that is separate from the machine
running Samba; the Samba machine has an /etc/cups/client.conf with
the ServerName of the CUPS server. In this setting, Samba does not
notice when you add or remove a CUPS printer, although 'lpstat -v'
and so on on the machine running Samba will show the changed printer
list. Reloading Samba (smbd) does not change this situation; only
restarting smbd makes Samba update the printer list.

It is possible that this bug also happens if the CUPS server is
running on the same machine as the Samba server, but I have not
tested that.

Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32-bit x86, with all current updates.
Samba version: 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.6
CUPS version: 1.4.3-1ubuntu1.3

(This probably reproduces on all architectures, but I haven't tested.)

How to reproduce:
- configure a CUPS server machine and set up a printer.
- install a stock Ubuntu 10.04 machine. Create an /etc/cups/client.conf
on it that has 'ServerName IP-of-CUPS-server'. Verify that Unix
  printing works.
- Install Samba: 'apt-get install samba smbclient'
- edit /etc/samba/smb.conf to add 'printcap cache time = 10' to the
'[ global ]' section. Restart Samba.
- Use 'smbclient -L localhost' to verify that you see the printer from
  your CUPS server.
- add a printer to your CUPS server. Wait 30 seconds and run
'smbclient -L localhost' again, and see that it does not show the new
printer. 'lpstat -v' and printing to it from Unix will work, though.
- optionally, 'reload smbd' and repeat the 'smbclient -L localhost' to
demonstrate that the reload did not change the situation.
- 'service smbd restart', repeat 'smbclient -L localhost', and the new
  printer is now present.
- delete the printer on the CUPS server, and rerun 'smbclient -L localhost';
  Samba still lists the printer.

(The convenient way to add a new printer is just to add a new name for
your existing printer, duplicating destination settings and so on.)

What I expected to happen: 'smbclient -L localhost' lists the new
printer when it is added and does not list it when it is removed.

This behavior is a regression from Ubuntu 8.04 (samba version
3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.14). I have not tested intermediate non-LTS
releases to determine where the problem first appears.

Since your Samba bug reporting page specifically asks for this
information:

$ dpkg-query -W -f='${Package} ${Version} ${Source} ${Status}\n' | grep samba
libsmbclient 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.5 samba install ok installed
libwbclient0 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.5 samba install ok installed
samba 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.5 install ok installed
samba-common 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.5 samba install ok installed
samba-common-bin 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.5 samba install ok installed
smbclient 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.5 samba install ok installed

The Samba log files in /var/log/samba contain no information; log.smbd
and log.nmbd have only startup notices, and the log.client file is
empty (0 length). I can include them if you really need them.

I'm attaching 'smbclient -L' output, and also /etc/samba/smb.conf
and 'testparm -s' output, although the latter two will probably be
mostly pointless (since I've given instructions on how to construct
the smb.conf above).

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2011-06-24 Thread Chris Fryer
I had a similar issue to Phil. A web server was generating PHP sessions
faster than they were being deleted by the cron job. This caused the
disk on which /var/lib/php5 was located to run out of inodes, and thence
to a loss of service.

It is caused by this upstream workaround, which is poor:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=461755#20

The latest version of the cron job that does PHP session garbage
collection is here:

http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-
php/php.git;a=blob;f=debian/php5-common.php5.cron.d;hb=HEAD

It would probably be a good idea to backport to this LTS release,
because it fixes Phil's issue, among other security concerns.

[Bug 802565] [NEW] Arbitrary file limit in garbage-collection cron script causes loss of service

2011-06-27 Thread Chris Fryer
Public bug reported:

PHP in Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS includes /etc/cron.d/php5:

 09,39 * * * * root [ -x /usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime ] [ -d
/var/lib/php5 ] find /var/lib/php5/ -type f -cmin
+$(/usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime) -print0 | xargs -n 200 -r -0 rm

$ dpkg -S /etc/cron.d/php5
php5-common: /etc/cron.d/php5

if your server generates PHP sessions faster than they can be deleted by
the cron job, the disk on which /var/lib/php5 is located will run out of
inodes, and thence to a loss of service.

It is caused by this upstream workaround:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=461755#20

collection is here:

http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-
php/php.git;a=blob;f=debian/php5-common.php5.cron.d;hb=HEAD

[Bug 828585] Re: ssh client prioritises ssh-agent keys over -i

2011-08-18 Thread Chris Jones
While I do think the -i option might be useful to respect in this
situation, a sufficiently strict .ssh/config that uses IdentitiesOnly
appears to be a viable workaround here

[Bug 828585] [NEW] ssh client prioritises ssh-agent keys over -i

2011-08-18 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

I have many ssh keys loaded into my ssh agent. If I specify a specific key on
the command line with ssh -i, the ssh client still offers all of my agent keys
before trying the one I specified.
This has the unfortunate consequences of:
 * hitting login attempt limits on (many?) ssh daemons
 * slowing down the login process

[Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking

2011-09-13 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Did this ever get fixed? The upstream patch with the helper was posted
to the mailing list in November 2009 and in the same thread it is
mentioned that the Ubuntu packaging would enable this by the time
Lucid/qemu-0.12-rc1 was released.
