the following descriptive text when in English:

Which makes perfect sense : you want to open the other account for a

When "gnucash" is run in Spanish, the "Jump" is translated as "Omitir", and
the descriptive text reads as :
  """

Which doesn't make any sense and is grammatically wrong. "Omitir"
means "Omit". What the translator most probably wanted to write is
"Remitir" instead of "Omitir". "Remitir" means approximately the same
as "Refer". But I can't see a reason why the English "Jump" is
translated to anything other than "Saltar" (which IIRC was the
translation in my previous 18.04 LTS).

In any case, using "Omitir" is wrong and will confuse the hell out of
any Spanish speaker (spent quite a while figuring this out). At the
very least, "Remitir" should be used. But in my opinion, "Saltar" is
  just the right thing.

Spanish done.

Shouldn’t there be a way to have the translation files refreshed
automatically whenever new strings are added? You put too much pressure
on volunteer translators to have everything translated in just a few
days’ notice, given these strings were added way back in the Groovy
cycle. 

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1808450] Re: Strings with placeholders don’t include quotation marks so they can’t be changed per locale

2019-08-20 Thread Adolfo Jayme
No need to mansplain. I’ve been translating software for more than a
decade; I know my typography.

Better explain to me something I don’t know: why is this the first time
a new placeholder “%q” has been needed? It confuses Launchpad (for
instance, I can’t save this string
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/eoan/+source/snapd/+pots/snappy/es/3/+translate)
and looks like over-engineering. Are you telling me that in Go you can’t
escape an ASCII quotation mark in a translatable string?

  Hi,

string:
  %sing snap %s

  Manfred Hampl found out:
"that "%s" is a placeholder that is filled with a string parameter, and "ing"
is constant text.

  Digging into the source https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
  /ubuntu-release-upgrader/tree/DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeQuirks.py#n459
(not sure whether it is the right version), it seems to be another
example of bad tricks that make translations impossible.

As far as I can see there are two branches, and depending on the status of
the snap, it is either installing or refreshing that snap.
The value of "command" is either "install" or "refresh", and the string %sing
results either in "installing" or in "refreshing".

With the way that this was done, I do not see any possibility that the
words "install" and "refresh" could be translated to a different
  language.

The only reasonable solution that I can suggest is a split into two messages,
e.g.
  …
  if re.search("^installed: ", …

  command = 'refresh'

  else:

The zh_CN version of gpasswd(1) not only is partially done, but also
contains an error in the first sentence. The translator confused the

heading, originally "Notes (noun) about group passwords," was
translated as "Please note (verb) the group passwords." Even Google

Right-click on Firefox in Unity's Dash (the strip on the left side of the
screen).
There are two custom Actions: "Open a New Window" and "Open a New Private
Window".

I propose that the "Open a " prefix be dropped.

This provides greater consistency with other apps which just use "New
Window" or "New Document" Actions. Examples include epiphany-browser,
  gedit, LibreOffice and Nautilus.

In GNOME Shell, Actions show in the Activities Overview. GNOME Shell
includes a default "New Window" action. So in GNOME Shell, the actions
shown include the duplicate "New Window" and "Open a New Window".
(Note that an explicit "New Window" shortcut does not duplicate the
default "New Window" in GNOME Shell as long as the action is named
  new-window.)

Also, you can drop the OnlyShowIn=Unity; from the Actions since
Actions are supported in other desktops (GNOME Shell currently ignores
  that anyway).

See bug 1668730 for chromium-browser and bug 1668699 for webbrowser-
  app.

Status in Ubuntu One Control Panel:
  Invalid
Status in ubuntuone-control-panel package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Backround:
English is one of the most compact written languages. As a result,
translations are often longer than the original message.

This becomes a problem in ubuntuone-control-panel, where buttons and
textfields are not big enough to hold the Dutch (nl) translations,
which means they are cut, and the user cannot read them properly. (See
  the attached screenshot).

  Preferred solution:
Make buttons expand in size depending on the text on the label. As can be
seen from the screenshot, there is plenty of room for the buttons to expand to
the left, and this was taken on an 10.1' netbook.

  Easiest solution:
Keep everything as it is, but add a translators comment to all relevant
strings, specifying the length restrictions that apply to that particular
string.

The relevant strings marked in the screenshot are:
  "Bestandssynchronisatie wordt uitgevoerd..."
  "Verbinding verbreken"

And the English source text is:
  "File Sync starting..."
  "Disconnect"

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1482269] Re: Call and Message translation in Spanish should be verbs

2015-08-09 Thread Adolfo Jayme
I’m not sure I follow you guys. The translations are verbs already. I
saw the translator’s comment and translated those as verbs since the
beginning.

Can you attach a screenshot where the nouns are displayed? I don’t have
any phone to test.

Relying solely on translators doesn't scale. Would it be possible to add a
mechanism to enable translation suggestion crowdsourcing ?

The basic idea would be a button to Translate this software
description below each untranslated description that would enable
users to easily provide a translation suggestion to the DDTP using
  Launchpad.

We could point the user to the DDTP translations in each individual
software summary shown in Ubuntu App Center or Synaptic. There would
be a button called Translate those descriptions

  just makes it sound wrong)

  * Als nach der Anzeige zu lesen doesn't make much sense. Not sure

  the least weird.

  * Bevorzugen Klartextmeldungen should be Bevorzuge Klartext
(Meldung is more like Announcement, there's no need for the
  messages in this context)

  * Zum löschen markierten Nac... doesn't make much sense either. I'm
wondering if the english text shouldn't be inverted here and changed
to Delete immediately. Mark as deleted is a bit less descriptive
IMO. If kept, could be translated to Als gelöscht markieren.

It's hard to read on the Suru theme, but all the placeholderTexts are
worded badly. Corrected they would be:

  * Geben Sie eine Empfängeradresse ein
  * Geben Sie einen Betreff ein
  * Geben Sie eine Nachricht ein

However, I'm afraid those quite formal versions won't fit into the

  * Empfängeradresse eingeben
  * Betreff eingeben
  * Nachricht eingeben

Bug description:
On the dash, System Settings is translated to Configuración del sistema.
Configuración is too long, so it's cut as

  Configuració
  n del sistema

That looks really bad. Maybe we can change the translation to Ajustes
  de sistema, or just Sistema.
