Does this have to be big vendors or can it include smaller system
builders dotted around?

If so, I build PCs (and servers) with Ubuntu on them via my own business
although I don't have a general set specification. If someone requests
it I'll install it, I will also recommend Linux solutions based on what
the customer wants (if they want a games machine I'd suggest Windows, if
they want a general every day PC to browse the internet, play media and
download videos I'd suggest Ubuntu over Windows, unless they really want
to pay an extra £60 for Vista Home).

You could suggest a dual boot for playing games!

I hadn't thought about that. I'm sure we could add a regional builders
list below the existing one. After all, the aim is simply to help
people get an Ubuntu system.

[ubuntu-uk] new internet cafe using ubuntu (not in the UK)

2008-08-31 Thread Douglas Campbell
Dear All,

On holiday in Zambia I came across an Internet cafe converting to
Ubuntu. It is the Kilimanjaro cafe at the Manda Hill shopping centre.

If any of you ever go to the country, please use it. They were set up
for wireless access, too.

(My wife is Zambian hence my visit.)

I agree. I believe we should be promoting vendors who sell Ubuntu systems
whether they be large or small. As I understand it Dale started Efficient PC
as a small side business, and grew from there. We should be helping these
people to get Ubuntu out there.

Cheers,
Al.

Excellent Ubuntu-spotting there!

I love hearing where people are seeing Ubuntu in use. The more remote/exotic
the better!

Can anyone on the list better this I wonder? :)

Cheers,

I saw Ubuntu running in the rain forest, on one of the many large
scale internet café's :)

Only joking.

My real Ubuntu spotting is that I saw it on someones laptop through a
window in Cheadle, staffs. I was very impressed :)

[ubuntu-uk] Question: where do you find apps?

2008-08-31 Thread John Levin
Hi all,

A question for you all, one that's been exercising me: where do you find
out about applications?
Do you read about them on the net or in mags, think it sounds
interesting, then look it up in synaptic?
If you have a particular need (say, cataloguing pdfs), how would you go
about finding a suitable app? How would you google, where would you ask?
If after searching, you have a large choice of apps, how would you
choose between them? Would you test them all? To what sort of depth?

TIA

John

For this particular case I am a big fan of the debtags search interface
at

  http://debtags.alioth.debian.org/ssearch.html

Try it! Type in something, e.g. music player and you are presented
with a list of packages. On the right are a list of tags. Click one
in the top section to remove it from the active list, click one in the
lower section to add it to the active list, or click no to exclude
anything with that tag. You can narrow down a list of interesting
packages quite quickly.

Thanks,

James

aptitude search term

I've used http://freshmeat.net quite a bit in the past, but the package
repositories in Debian/Ubuntu are so comprehensive I now find everything I need
using aptitude.

Trial and error! I've used lots of Linux distributions and apps just by
installing, testing, then removing. You'll find what suits you
eventually I think. :) Just take time! Also I check on forums and google
reviews of software.
