[ubuntu-uk] gnome panels MIA...

2009-05-13 Thread Cornelius Mostert
Hallo all

I have a system that has problems to load the Gnome panels, It boots
and the moment I log on I get the desk top but no panels
In the past I could execute the 2 commandments to load or reload the
panels if they frose:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
killall gnome-panel

and then the panels would auto load again, however at this stage I get
this error on the first command and the panels does not load at all...

Please have a look at this ...
___
[server]# gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
Failure during recursive unset of /apps/panel: Failed to contact
configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable
TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a
system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for
information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did
not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application
did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the
reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was
broken.)

[server]# killall gnome-panel

I know the system was a bit flake and will go to the mentioned website
and Google of course but maybe you guys have a quick solution / idea

thanx

Hi,

Does this happen with any other user on your system? Can you try with a new
user? Can you boot a failsafe GNOME session? If not, try running a failsafe
xterm session and then running gnome-session --debug 21 | tee ~/gsm.log
and having a look at the output of gnome-session.

Not really. You can reinstall over the top these days and it will wipe
everything except /home - even if it's all on one partition. This
gives you the benefit that having /home in a separate partition has,
but with the added benefit of not having to maintain extra partitions,
and the possibility of having space in the wrong part.

Not for everyone, some people like separate partitions for /home, just
pointing out you don't have to, to get that benefit.

Oh, really? I didn't know about that. When did it come in what's it
called? I'd like to go and do some digging and reading...

Hardy. See https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubiquity-preserve-home
for detail.

It would also appear that the paid for version will cost more for less

Because of the multi-value nature of the English language, your

take anything posted on it with a Imperial gallon of FUD. YMMV

John, there is some broken telephone situation here.

The original statement is about the belief of an analyst that Windows
7 (when it appears!) will take
over Linux on the netbooks.

Netbooks loosing (sic) Linux for Windows 7 is not a precise summary
of the original article.

Oh right, now that makes more sense, it is quite funny how different
that is to the article I found. That is quite annoying really.

I have to admit though, up till 9.04, I was having a few problems
getting my netbook and laptop to work the way I wanted it to, but with
Ubuntu 9.04 the difference is amazing, its even working really well on
my crappy laptop, which is what I'm using now. It is getting better with
each edition. I'm trying to get some of my friends to use it, especially
one who has major problems with a Vista laptop. The more I use it, the
more I try to tell people about it.

This is a bit of an old story that has been doing the rounds for aa few
months now. Probably being funded by MS indirectly.

When Mr. Average finds out that his version of Windows 7 on his shiny
new Netbook will only run *three* applications simultaneously I think he
will be rather miffed.

MS can't afford to *not* be in the netbook market but they can't really
afford *to* be in it either. Not at $10/machine at any rate.

Hence the lobotomised version. You will of course be able to purchase an
upgrade at vast expense...

Apparently those already on can pass invites on to others that will jump
the queue, so if you know someone that is already using it you can ask
them.

(To invite someone this way then offer to share something with them)

You should still listen to the podcast though. I suspect that there

I have, my laptop tends to stay at home where it's in wifi distance of
my home server, so it hasn't saw much use.

Interesting that Canonical are creating more proprietary software, after
announcing an intent to open source more of launchpad last year.
