The Ubuntu EMEA Regional Membership Board (EMEA RMB) is seeking an
additional Ubuntu community member to join as a member of the board.
More details about the RMB can be found at the following links:-

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Membership/RegionalBoards
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Membership/RegionalBoards/EMEA
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-membership-board-emea

The Regional Membership Boards are responsible for considering Ubuntu
member applications and do this via a regular public meeting held on
IRC. Ideally the candidate should reside in an timezone which is
conducive to attending one hour online meetings which are typically
held at around 20:00 UTC, and can commit to attending those meetings
wherever possible.

The EMEA RMB will collate nominations and pass the list (in full) to
the Community Council who will select one person from the list
supplied. The plan looks like this:-

* Nominations open with this mail on 10th December 2009
* Nominations close on 17th December 2009
* EMEA RMB to collate nominees and pass to the Community Council by
24th December
* Community Council to select from above pool and announce accordingly

If you are an Ubuntu member and are interested in joining the EMEA
RMB, or know someone else who is an existing member and might be
suitable, please drop an email to the board at the following address:-

ubuntu-membership-board-e...@lists.ubuntu.com

Note: This is a private mailing list so your mail will be held in
moderation, and you may be notified of this via a reply. We will
approve all nomination mails to the list.

Please pass this notification on to your teams.

Many thanks,
Alan Pope

How does it not work? Does nothing happen when you try to open video
files or are you getting any error messages?

Can you start one (or more) of the video players from a terminal and
let us know what messages are printed to the terminal when you try to
play something?

Hi,

Every time I try going to ubuntuforums.org, I get redirected to

Is this happening for other people? Are the forums down, or am I having
a dns problem?

TIA

Since I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, I have had some issues with video
playback. It doesn't affect all my videos.

Near the beginning of an avi file, maybe in two places, four ascii
characters identify to the playback software what codec to use. These
four character codes are known as fourcc. When I have come across a
problem avi, Gnome player sits there and does nothing, and VLC gives me
an error message of (I paraphrase) VLC cannot play this file because
the codec is XVID and not supported. There is nothing you can do to
resolve this. I love that last bit ;-)

This got me thinking, because Linux can be a bit picky about what is in
upper or lower case, could it be that the 4cc must be xvid instead of
XVID or XviD. Something changed between 9.04 and 9.10? I had a similar
issue when MS WinXP decided to stop playing a Samsung codec because it
stopped recognising the fourcc. Turned out that the Samsung codec was a
renamed XviD!!

So I got a Hex editor from the Ubuntu repositories, found all (one or
two) instances of XVID in the ascii representation of the code and
replaced it with xvid. And they play fine then.

I don't know if this is related to your issue, but maybe worth a try.
And I'd be interested to know if anyone else has experienced something
similar.

[ubuntu-uk] wholel disk access ?

2009-12-10 Thread Des
Hello All,

My system has Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.1 running dual boot.

Is it possible to access old files on 9.04 from 9.1? If so how?

The reason I want to do this is that I have messed up
my /etc/fstab in
9.04 and can`t use my USB stick to transfer files.

A separate question:

Are floppy drives now a thing of the past?
I have been told that a
legal thingy is going on with Micro over the issue.

Most grateful for any help. Thanks

Des

 Hello All,

I think you should see the other partition in the Places menu,
possibly with a name just indicating the size of the partition if the
partition is not labeled. Alternatively you can mount the other
partition via fstab.
