I've got an archaos 10, running Android, 10 inch screen. Cost £300. I'm
quite happy with it, though I do prefer proper keyboards to those screen
things. When I was looking at tablets around Xmas, I tried the Samsung
Galaxy in a couple of shops, and really didn't like it. Expensive,
misconfigured (that could have been the shops, but I did try it in two
different places), and the screen (7) was on the small side.

Cons of archaos: it's own limited app market, tho' you can install
google's version (slightly tricky). The pdf viewers aren't brilliant.

But it very much depends on what you want to use it for.

Hi John,

According to the review in Linux User and Developer, the best one to go for
it the Samsung Galaxy Tab at £390. A close runner up was the Dell Streak,
but that is also priced at £390...

You may be able to get one on contract, see

Hope this was helpful.

What would you use the tablet for?

I recently (December) had a chat with Matthew Garrett who maintains a
list of Android tablets [0]. His goal is to ensure that companies stay
compliant with the GPL but in his work he's learned a lot about
tablets. He told me that the current best one on the market is the
Advent Vega though right now it's in violation of the GPL. Its
pretty much identical to the Viewsonic gtab, which he does have
source for, so the Advent issue should be solved soon.

Two things he did alert me to was that most of them have a flaw in
that they don't actually have a suspend mode, so when they power
save they actually just switch the screen off... and then die 3 hours
later. Most also claim to have multi-touch but don't. They just have
single finger touch with pinch-recognition, although the Vega is
apparently okay in this regard.

I have about £300 to spend. I dont like Apple at all.

I don't like Apple either, but I bought an iPad and love it.

Cheers,
Al.

I have the Dell Streak which isn't really a tablet but at 5 screen size
it is quite close. It is however, in my humble opinion, a brilliant
all-round device.

It's a phone and a small tablet rolled into one and it *does* fit easily
into my Jeans or shirt pocket.

It runs Android Froyo.

It is the 16GB version but you can still expand this using an external
MicroSD card.

Click that link then click Specification.

RAM capacity: 512 MiB

Looks like it comes with a 16GB SDHC card for storage.
