Does anyone else find this something of a coincidence after Dell
suddenly stopped shipping Ubuntu pre-loaded? Or have I got carried away

Its not the dock, its the Dell Datasafe backup software and it only affects
Grub2, doesn't affect  earlier versions of Grub.

Tell him to boot into windows, uninstall, re-install grub and it will work.

I suspect most people don't even realise that OEMS get a kickback from

True, but I'm pleased to see on the last three HP's I've bought for the 
work (sadly all staying Windows boxes), that there was NO crapware 
installed.

So perhaps this is coming to an end??
