Thank, Adam I got an unlocked dongle on e-bay really cheaply, and then looked for the best deal for PAYG connection - at that time it was on 3 but currently I believe TalkMobile is the best bet unless you want a lot of data. They cap at 25p per day for no more than 50mb which does for e-mails and a bit of browsing. I've used my dongle on 3, Virgin media, t-mobile and TalkMobile - whichever is best for the moment. I use an old unlocked T-Mobile dongle with an Andrews and Arnold SIM so it might even be worth looking on eBay for something like that. s/ -- Twitter: @sfgreenwood TBA are particularly glib -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] recommendations for dongle internet?
Hi Adam, I have used an android smartphone as a wifi hotspot with no problems with ubuntu (from 10.04). Most dongles should work with it anyway. From my very limited experience the huawei ones work right out of the box, it is just a question of changing a setting so that it connects via the dongle and doesnt look for wifi(or just turn off wifi and that should work). In worst case scenario if it doesnt work for some reason then most shops (o2,vodafone etc) will refund you the cost if it doesnt work. Since the kernel 3.0.27 update (latest i think) there is now support for even more devices. ps this is the dongle that i have used-- huawei k3770. The following guide should help if you do encounter any problems http://digitalgotcha.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/get-vodafone-3g-dongle-huawei-k3770.html hope this helped On 2 August 2012 16:14, Adam Funk a24...@ducksburg.com wrote: Just wondering if anyone would like to recommend any particular USB dongle internet hardware/services in the UK? During 10.04 days their supplied dongle worked well. I have since been upgraded in both GByte allowance and supplied dongle. Re: [ubuntu-uk] recommendations for dongle internet?
I also had a period from 10.04 alpha2 of dark days with my 3g dongle, it works fine now :) I think the best advice has already been given. Take the laptop into the shop say that if it works, you'll consider buying it. As also mentioned, yup - when I do new installs the system recognises it as '3' and then just sorts it out. I also do NOT work for '3' and would have told people that we were having problems for a couple of releases. regards, Phill.
