Please go into a shop and ask about Linux support.

What about giffgaff? You can get 3gb of data for £12.50.

Most Huawei dongles will work. With 12.04 the majority of UK broadband
providers are identified when you plug the dongle in, so it might really be
a case of taking your laptop to a store and asking to test their mobile
internet package. I use an old unlocked T-Mobile dongle with an Andrews and
Arnold SIM so it might even be worth looking on eBay for something like
that.

Hi Adam,
I have used an android smartphone as a wifi hotspot with no problems with
ubuntu (from 10.04). Most dongles should work with it anyway. From my very
limited experience the huawei ones work right out of the box, it is just a
question of changing a setting so that it connects via the dongle and
doesnt look for wifi(or just turn off wifi and that should work). In worst
case scenario if it doesnt work for some reason then most shops
(o2,vodafone etc) will refund you the cost if it doesnt work. Since the
kernel 3.0.27 update (latest i think) there is now support for even more
devices. ps this is the dongle that i have used-- huawei k3770. The
following guide should help if you do encounter any problems

Adam,
re your request for recommended service provider as well as the
hardware... [this is my own experience]

I started with and have stuck with 3.
During 10.04 days their supplied dongle worked well.

I have since been upgraded in both GByte allowance and supplied dongle.

Verdict:
- the *original* dongle was good with bog standard 10.04.
- the *current* dongle *is* good with 12.04 [as in -out of the box]

Be wary though, the original won't connect on 12.04, the latest won't
work on 10.04 [kernel drivers difference I think].

If you are on 12.04 ensure [if you go with 3 as your service], that
the dongle is the E367 - if so - no probs... works out of the box.

Overall - whichever of the two I used [whether at home or travelling
around] I never had any difficulty getting a reliable fast [enough]
connection.

[No - I do not work for 3 and have no reason to promote them - other
than the above facts].

Good luck whatever your choice.

I also had a period from 10.04 alpha2 of dark days with my 3g dongle, it
works fine now :)

I think the best advice has already been given. Take the laptop into the
shop say that if it works, you'll consider buying it. As also mentioned,
yup - when I do new installs the system recognises it as '3' and then just
sorts it out. I also do NOT work for '3' and would have told people that we
were having problems for a couple of releases.
