Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Further Salem Hours

2024-01-26 Thread Philip N
Thanks Cody for setting this up more than a decade ago, and for your
awesome community participation.
It was indeed a fun decade, especially traveling to Portland together to
attend a Release party or two with James, B.
Wishing you the best of luck with work, and your future endeavors.

As for myself hosting, I'm recently getting more involved with robotics and
radio technologies through my participation with the electronics club over
at Chemeketa.
I'm currently helping with the VEX-U robotics competition, along with
organizing FCC exam testing at the college. Our goal for FCC testing is to
provide a consistent place for our LoCo community to get their Amateur
radio Technician Class license. Of course I'm involved with the Electronics
club, and occasionally the new Makerspace here in Salem. So if anyone is
interested in Hosting the Salem Ubuntu Hour, please keep in mind there is
the possibility of meeting at the Makerspace, although I prefer to meet at
Broadway coffeehouse, because it is more centrally located downtown near
bus stops.

It's something to think about, all this LoCo tech stuff started more than a
decade ago at our LoCo Ubuntu Hour, amazing to see the growth of so many
tech clubs from a single seed planted more than a decade ago.
Thanks Linux/Ubuntu community, and everyone for your awesome community
support.

P.S. Even though this Friday, Jan 26th is not our normally scheduled Ubuntu
meet up, I will be at Broadway coffeehouse this evening at 6 pm, so feel
free to stop by to say Hi!

'twas a fun decade indeed. Ciao for now
Your Friend,
Trekkie Techie Phil. - Co-founder of Microportal, the Electronics Club.

Hay Cody,
I'll try to be there (at the place to be) a little earley.
Looking forward to seeing you and those who show up
I've got lots of awesome things going on lately, currently working on
setting up an FCC Ameture radio class and exam testing at Chemeketa, for
those LoCo techies interested in obtaining an FCC license.
See you soon.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu Hour

2023-01-20 Thread Philip N
Thanks Steve for your advice, I will keep exploring new things about Proton.
I've been using their VPN on my Ubuntu 20.04 laptop for a while now, and so
far I really like ProtonVPN.

Good seeing Cody, and Ryein at the meeting this evening, plus was able to
find out new things regarding Thunderbird as well.
BTY: ProtonMail runs in Thunderbird mail via Proton Gateway app ;-)

Cheers,
P.N.

Hey Ryein, Cody, Looks like time is permitting, so I'll be there, although
I may be a bit late.
Regarding Proton mail, it's not secure when sending to non-proton users -
there used to be a way to add your own public-key into Thunderbird mail,
not sure if that is still doable,
See ya soon.

[Ubuntu Oregon] A few words about using Microsoft Teams.

2023-01-07 Thread Philip N
I would like to offer some advice about using Microsoft Teams on a Linux
Box.

*Using Microsoft Teams on Linux*:
It may be necessary to run Microsoft Teams as part of a virtual interview
process, or for your work / school.

Here's what I discovered regarding running Microsoft Teams on a Linux
system, that I'd like to pass along to the Linux community.
BTW: This is also applicable for those people who need to run Teams on a
Microsoft Windows system, and don't wish to install the Teams App.

While it is possible to use Microsoft Teams on a Linux system by installing
their Teams App, the app is NOT intended for individual use under the free
tier. Basically, if someone installs the Teams Linux desktop client App,
either from Ubuntu's Software Center, or downloads it directly from
Microsoft, they will soon discover it's only available for Work or School
use. Also as of the end of December 2022, Microsoft will no longer offer a
Linux App for Teams. However there is some good news for Linux users -
Microsoft Teams recently became a Progressive Web App (PWA). This means
Microsoft Teams will now run as an online Web Application from one of
Microsoft's websites either at: https://teams.live.com, or
https://teams.microsoft.com using one of the supported web-browsers. So
nothing to download, nothing to install.

Currently Microsoft Teams supports two web-browsers; Microsoft's own Edge
browser, and Google's Chrome browser. As some of you tech savvy people
know, Microsoft's Edge browser is a Chromium-based browser incorporating
Blink and V8 engines, and both Blink and V8 are part of the Chromium
project for Google Chrome and Chromium web browsers. Therefore Microsoft
Teams will run great inside the Google Chrome web browser, which can
download for Linux or Windows directly from Google at
https://www.google.com/chrome/ If you're currently running Linux when you
go to download Google Chrome, you'll be given the choice of downloading
Chrome as a 64-bit .deb package for Debian/Ubuntu, or a 64-bit .rpm package
for Fedora/openSUSE.

Once Google Chrome is successfully installed - The next time you receive a
Microsoft Teams invite link, all you'll need to do is open the invite link
using a supported browser.
Then select the box that states; "*Continue on this browser, no download or
installation will be required*". - It's that simple...

Hopefully this helps those who need to run Microsoft Teams, whether it's on
Windows or Linux.

Best regards, and happy new year.
Ciao for now.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Post test.

2022-11-19 Thread Philip N
Cody, Thanks for replying so quickly,
I officially know my problem with emailing to the Ubuntu List is NOW fixed.
- Thank you Cody.
No problem with you not being able to make it to the Ubuntu hour Friday
evening. I can completely understand job related tasks coming first... It's
just good career-related time management on your part.
I was mainly hanging out at BWC to work on the email announcement for the
electronic club, and also there just in case someone from our LoCo group
showed up, which no one did... So no biggie.

Now that I know my sending problem with the Ubuntu List is solved. I'll
get something sent to the list this weekend, as to what I accidently did to
create my own issue, and how I resolved it. ..

Ciao for now,
Techie , Trekkie Phil.

[Ubuntu Oregon] Post test.

2022-11-18 Thread Philip N
Hi Ubuntu LoCo Team,

I believe I've fixed my problem posting to the Ubuntu list, so this email
will act as my first post test after fixing the problem I was having. :-)

The problem I was having posting to the Ubunu List, was that my "sending"
email address was different from what I had originally set up for the
Ubuntu List. This caused my "sent" emails to be held pending approval.
This, of course, was my own fault, and not caused by anything on the LoCo
website, or the Ubuntu List site. I caused my own problem, when I changed
my mail address used to send to the Ubuntu List, and forgot to update my
email on the Ubuntu list. However the differences in email addresses did
hinder my ability to receive from the Ubuntu List, so I've been receiving
everyones email O.K, just could not reply So I'm glad to learn from
those emails, that the LoCo Oregon Ubuntu clubs are actively thriving again.

To solve my ability to send to the Ubuntu List, it was necessary to change
the email I use for the Ubuntu List. So perhaps I should reintroduce myself
to let everyone know who I'm, because I'm now posting under a different
email address.

Hi My name is Phil. N, and I'm the techie trekkie with the Salem Ubuntu
Hour group, the one who co-founded the Electronics club, which by the way,
I'm happy to report it has recently forked into a thriving community
Makerspace here in Salem. And at one time, I was Vice President of SMUG,
Salem Macintosh Users Group, which is an Apple Support group currently
alive and doing well in Salem.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, eat lots of Pies or at least build a Linux Pi
project...
Thank you all for being part of our Linux community.

Best regards,

Phil. N.
