What is worse, every tab then has this problem. None will show the

Title:
hide selection handle when start typing

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Confirmed
Status in Oxide:
  Confirmed
Status in webbrowser-app package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
we are showing the selection handle (in addition to the cursor)
whenever entering a text field that already has text in it. For
example, if you are replying to a Gmail message, you have an annoying
blue selection handle blinking where you are trying to type and you
can't turn it off. Or on a form, focusing on a field to append text
will also show the selection handle. Or a multi line text area, adding
a new line and typing at the beginning.

Tested Chrome on Android and it behaves differently, and think we should do
similar:
   1. Show the selection handle initially, but have it disappear when you press
any key (space, character, etc.)
   2. Tapping anywhere in the field will cause handle to be shown again
   3. Also, can we put the selection handle on the bottom of the cursor instead
of the top? This is the behavior on Chrome for Android and the rest of our
non-html platform in Ubuntu touch.

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1375889] Re: reply to message in gmail shows garbled reply view

2016-06-06 Thread Bill Filler
I had similar lack of success when tweaking the override in ua-
overrides-mobile.js

Then I removed the override and starting tweaking the default UA string
just to see if it had any effect in UserAgent02.qml.

This string caused better formatting of mail.google.com and looked
similar to Android. I tested using the browser and opening
mail.google.com - did not try the webapp as I don't know if that has
it's own override.

readonly property string _template: "Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Ubuntu %1%2%3)
AppleWebKit/%4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/%5 %6Safari/%7%8"

Maybe the override mechanism is not working correctly?

Only issue I observed with this UA String is that double tapping
spacebar to insert period and autocaps no longer work when
composing/replying to message.

reply to message in gmail shows garbled reply view

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Confirmed
Status in webbrowser-app package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
try to reply to a message in gmail webapp
  I frequently see these issues:
  1) the message you are replying too is inlined, but in an ugly fashion. It
has >> characters but they don't always line up and the message looks garbled,
especially if the message had an image in it, you see binary data

2)quite often, but not always, the reply view is not scrolled to the
top so you don't see where your cursor is. Once you start typing then
  the view is scrollled.

We should behave like Chrome for Android. For issue 1) they show a the
message inlined next to a vertical divider which makes it look quite
clean. For issue 2) this never occurs on Android.

You can test with this UA String as an override:
  Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.0.4; Galaxy Nexus Build/IMM76B)
AppleWebKit/535.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/18.0.1025.133 Mobile Safari/535.19

  in the file /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/qt5/qml/Ubuntu/Web/ua-
  overrides-mobile.js

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1584965] [NEW] [browser] scrolling uneven and queues up

2016-05-23 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

I've noticed this on a bunch of websites, mainly on Arale but also on
krillin, both running latest rc-proposed with and without oxide 1.15

The scenario is I'm on page A, navigate to page B, press back button,
then try to scroll page A (flicking up). The page doesn't move for a
short time then scrolls super fast almost to the bottom. Seems like the
scroll events are getting queued up and then all applied at once.

This site reproduces it pretty easy for me:

1) goto boston.craigslist.org
2) type "kayak" in the search field
3) you'll get a page full of results
4) click on one of the results
5) wait till page fully loads, flick quickly a few times, first flicks ignored.
then press back button
6) wait till page fully loads and then start scrolling (flicking up, multiple
times), first flicks ignored/queued then scrolling happens fast

Expected results:
the page should start scrolling immediately and keep up with action of finger

Actual results:
the page is not responsive for a few seconds then scrolls super fast toward the
bottom

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1550371] [NEW] Webbrowser slow scroll and artifact rendering on freiza

2016-02-26 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

Copied from private avila bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/avila-private/+bug/1547569
STEPS:
1. Install the latest image
2. Open the browser
3. Goto ubuntu.com
4. Wait for the page to load
5. Scroll the page

EXPECT
Smooth scrolling and rendering as seen on arale and krillin

ACTUAL:
Very slow render time on most site with a lot of content
Scrolling is glitchy and seems to want to fresh render each page as it is
scrolled

This is most prominently seen on ubuntu.com but also ebay and amazon
webapps.

Webbrowser seems to display the issue the most although I beleive it is
more likely to be the graphics stack somewhere, tvoss believe that
perfservice will hopefully solve the issue.

  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Copied from private avila bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/avila-private/+bug/1547569
  STEPS:
  1. Install the latest image
  2. Open the browser
  3. Goto ubuntu.com
  4. Wait for the page to load
  5. Scroll the page

  EXPECT
Smooth scrolling and rendering as seen on arale and krillin

  ACTUAL:
Very slow render time on most site with a lot of content
Scrolling is glitchy and seems to want to fresh render each page as it is
scrolled

This is most prominently seen on ubuntu.com but also ebay and amazon
  webapps.

Webbrowser seems to display the issue the most although I beleive it
is more likely to be the graphics stack somewhere, tvoss believe that
perfservice will hopefully solve the issue.

I see this can be changed in chrome by editing some css files, is it
possible to do the same in oxide? Or is this even doable in oxide? I
tried to look through the content api docs but I couldn't make head

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1418626] [NEW] Embedded YouTube videos stuttering and not playing back smoothly

2015-02-05 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

Related to bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/webbrowser-app/+bug/1417258.

Embedded youtube videos, like this:
http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/2352016-papa-johns-airs-wrong-commercial-congratulates-seahawks-after-super-bowl

or this:
http://pages.ebay.com/shoptheworld/

do not play back correctly. They exhibit stuttering and stopping, with
oxide-renderer process using over 100% CPU.

This was worked around on YouTube.com (and webapp) by using overriden UA
string which makes YouTube send us a stream that we can playback
smoothly. But this UA string is not presented to embedded videos within
other sites.

We should figure out how we can send the UA override to embedded videos
(if possible), and if not what change could we make to our default UA
string such that YouTube gives us content that we can render more
efficiently.

Other ideas?

I am seeing this as well. Once you zoom in, you basically cannot zoom
back out making the app unusable. I've witnessed crashes a few times as
well trying to restore the zoom level back to normal so I could continue
to use the app. I will try to get some crash files

pinch-to-unzoom gesture resets zoom level to max in google maps

Status in Oxide Webview:

Bug description:
This seems to be a fairly recent regression, although I’m not quite
  sure when it started happening.

On Ubuntu Touch, in the google maps application (and in the browser
app too), the pinch-to-unzoom gesture almost always resets the zoom
level to its maximum, effectively making it impossible to zoom out.

This happens both in the latest 14.09-proposed (which has oxide
1.3.5-0ubuntu0.14.10.1~rtm) and in the latest vivid-proposed (which
  has oxide 1.4.2-0ubuntu1).

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1400372] Re: keyboard re-appears in webbrowser after dismissing

2015-01-29 Thread Bill Filler
Seeing this issue a lot, not just on gmail. It's quite easy to
reproduce. Just load a web page that has a text field and other content.
Move cursor into the text field. Swipe the keyboard away. Then try to
scroll the page.

Expected result:
- I can start scrolling the page without the keyboard popping back up

Actual result:
- As soon as scrolling starts, the keyboard re-appears.

Seems like the problem is we are not releasing focus correctly on the
field when we close the keyboard so that when scrolling starts it thinks
it has a new focus event.

** Summary changed:

- keyboard re-appears in gmail after dismissing

  - search results are displayed and the keyboard remains visible
  - now manually swipe the keyboard close in order to scroll through the search

  Expected results:
  - keyboard should stay closed while scrolling

  Actual results:
  - keyboard becomes visible when start scrolling and can't get it to disappear

Guessing the text field must still have focus and is somehow causing

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1413765] [NEW] autoscrolling not working in online accounts

2015-01-22 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

krillin rtm build 208

clicking in entry field in an online accounts embedded webpage is not
causing the field to scroll into view as it does when loading in
webbrowser-app

Steps to reproduce:
- create a new Google online account
- click on the username/email field
- the OSK is displayed

Expected result:
- the entry field that has focus should be scrolled into view and unobstructed

Actual result:
- the entry field is not scrolled and partially obstructed

This same thing works when done directly in the browser. Not sure if the
issue is browser related, or something to do with the container.

can't get back to the maps.

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1376418] [NEW] open tabs using too much memory

2014-10-01 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

See initial report on barajas project:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/barajas/+bug/1376165

Basically we should free the resources of open tabs when they move to
the background during the running of the browser as each tab uses much
memory and cause the system with low memory, especially on krillin, to
start killing everything with the oom killer.

See the details in the barajas report.

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1374562] [NEW] gmail toolbar scrolls over the message content

2014-09-26 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

build r67 on krillin

Using the Gmail webapp or Webbrowser-app I see the same behavior. Log
into gmail and open an email message. You'll notice a toolbar on the top
right (with Folder icon, Trash icon, and Down arrow icon).

When you scroll the message, the toolbar jumps around on the page.
Scrolling from bottom of page to top make it disappear and reappear at
the top. Scrolling from top to bottom makes the toolbar scroll down with
the content and then finally anchor in the page. It's very apparent the
slower you scroll. It's quite annoying when trying to read email.

I tried this in Chrome for Android and it does not have the same
behavior. The toolbar is fixed in the page there and does not exhibit
the same behavior that we do.

Status in Ubuntu UX bugs:

Bug description:
After killing the browser app, each subsequent restart will open it
with the same set of pages open. In theory this might be a nice
feature, but it's kind of a problem if one of those pages causes the
browser to crash or lock up. The browser app then becomes unusable
  without manually removing its config.

Could we make it ask on launch whether to re-open previous pages, and
let the user choose to start fresh if desired?

I've noticed this a lot lately, but the specific version I'm using now
is from rtm krillin image 33.

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1357464] [NEW] restoring browser shows blank tab previews

2014-08-15 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

after closing the browser and reopening, the open tabs are now restored
which is great. However when viewing the tabs page, all of the previews
are blank which makes for a pretty ugly looking page.

Can we persist these preview images, same as we're doing for the favicon images
so that we can restore them when the app starts?
If not, we should minimally show something in the tab preview like Click to
open or some other graphic

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1349510] [NEW] browser crashes when attaching photo in gmail

2014-07-28 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

build 154

- Save the attached photo in the bug into your ~Pictures directory on the phone
- Open gmail in the browser (or as a webbapp, doesn't make a different)
- Compose a new gmail message
- press the attach button
- select the photo under test in the gallery
- the browser is shown briefly then crashes

NOTE:
the browser only seems to crash with a bunch of photos that I copied to the
device, all of their size is 2.1mb. So it may be size related. Or noticing now
the orientation of the photo appears rotated when viewing on the desktop, so
maybe something about the orientation? Photos taken with the camera work fine.

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1347764] [NEW] webapps user scripts overriding StateSaver saved url

2014-07-23 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

placeholder bug for issue that has been discussed already:
webapps and webbrowser are now using StateSaver to restore previous url if they
are killed by oom killer. There is an issue with webapps that use user scripts
(currently Facebook) where the user script runs after the save url is restored
and overwrites it with it's own url. This will need to be updated to honor the
value saved by StateSaver, if present.

Status in Oxide Webview:

Status in Ubuntu Keyboard:

Status in Web Browser App:
  Fix Released
Status in “ubuntu-keyboard” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  using build r48
  maliit-framework 0.99.0+git20130615+97e8335-0ubuntu8
  ubuntu-keyboard 0.99.trunk.phablet2+14.10.20140515-0ubuntu1
  webapp-container 0.23+14.10.20140522.1-0ubuntu1

I don't have the exact steps to reproduce the issue, but have run into
a lot over the last few days of using the phone.

  - launch gmail webapp
  - launch twitter webapp
  - try and use both, doing things to cause the osk to display (like
sending/replying to email, writing a tweet, etc)
  - click on links in gmail that cause the browser to be open
  - all works fine for a while
  - then do other things on phone, like launch other apps, open the browser
app, suspend resume, use the carousel spread to switch between open apps (fast
right edge swipe)
  - phone gets into a state where the osk is no longer displayed in the webapps
no matter what you do

The only way to get osk back in the webapp is to close the webapp and
relaunch it. This fixes the webapp you relaunched but not others that
  are already open.

[Ubuntu-webapps-bugs] [Bug 1268056] Re: Should preserve session (open tabs etc.)

2014-07-07 Thread Bill Filler
Bumping up the priority here. In my testing, especially when running
multiple webapps, the oom killer frequently kills the webapps and/or the
browser if too many apps are open. We should minimally save/restore the
url of the currently viewed page and use the StateSaver mechanism in the
sdk to do so. Otherwise when you switch back to the app from the apps
lens you are back at the starting page, which is quite annoying if you
had previously navigated a few pages deep.

Step one should be save/restore url
Step two should be save/restore list of open tabs and remember currently
visible tabs

Bug description:
Currently our UbuntuWebview implementations are in
Ubuntu.Components.Extras.Browser. These are not documented on d.u.c.

This should move to a new namespace (i.e. Ubuntu.Browser or Ubuntu.Web
for example) and can maintain the UbuntuWebView name. However I would
prefer not putting Ubuntu in the object name as its both redundant
with the namespace and not conducive to reuse by others. Note we
should not use simply WebView as that will collide with the webkit
  version.

We need to determine if any apps currently use this api even though it
was not promoted as an official part of the toolkit. If so we may need
to maintain the old naming for some time in parallel if possible.

  Change UbuntuWebView namespace to Ubuntu.Browser

Status in Ubuntu UI SDK for HTML5 Apps:
  New
Status in Web Browser App:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The Ubuntu.Components.Extras namespace (and sub-namespaces) are not
technically part of the Ubuntu SDK (they are extra), which means
that their use is not encouraged for app developers outside of
experimentation. Since we want to encourage the use of the
UbuntuWebView component (and discourage he use of QTWebkit), we need
to move it outside of the .Extras namespace.

The precedent for other components is simple Ubuntu.${project}. For
example, content-hub has Ubuntu.Content, online accounts has
Ubuntu.OnlineAccounts, etc. Following that, UbuntuWebView should
  reside in the namespace Ubuntu.Browser.

Dropping the component from the old namespace will break some apps in
the store that are using it. The list of those apps can be found
  here: https://chinstrap.canonical.com/~alan/log.txt

If it would work, adding a symlink from the old location to the new
might allow those apps to keep working after the change.

Bug description:
This is not a regression (I'm only just now filing this).

If I open the webbrowser-app and press 'Activity' from the bottom
toolbar, it can take several esconds (5-10) for the activity tab to
display. During that time, no feedback that something is happening is
given to the user. Once it does, scrolling up and down is painfully
slow. Left to right scrolling with a category (This year, This month,
etc) is acceptable. The performance of Activity seems to be aggravated
by the number of items in the activity. Eg, if I remove ~/.cache
/webbrowser-app and ~.local/share/webbrowser-app, then performance is
  improved.

Accessing bookmarks is also very slow-- you have to go through
Activity to access them, and then clicking the Bookmarks tab takes
several seconds to display. Vertical scrolling seems better in
Bookmarks than in Activity and is usable with the number of bookmarks
I have, but the performance is somewhat sluggish and could be
  improved.

This is on mako on latest promoted trusted image (58).

sorry, not a bug. You have to click on the blue text and not the link
(which is confusing). Maybe some more immediate feedback when pressing
on a link would help in case it takes a while to load the page

Bug description:
  From this MR https://code.launchpad.net/~tpeeters/ubuntu-ui-toolkit
  /toolbar-tabs-deactivate/+merge/186065 :

Re-launching an application: tabs should be expanded and toolbar open
   - When opening an application that is in recent application category
(stopped/suspended) toolbar is not shown and tabs are not expanded.
   - This causes inconsistency between different app launches.
   - So every time the app is launched/opened toolbar should be in open state
and
tabs in expanded state. In place. No animation. No animation because it
would
be too intrusive when going through app stack with right edge swipe.

Currently tab/toolbar are open by default when the app is first
launched, not when it is resumed after being suspended.

Perhaps the above behavior can be accomplished by reacting to changes
  in Application.active.

Tapping links in Apache-generated directory listings opens wrong link

Status in Web Browser App:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  * Open cdimage.ubuntu.com
  * Try to open ubuntu-touch. You may zoom in as close as you want. Try
different scrolling positions.

  Expected outcome:
  * ubuntu-touch opens

  Actual outcome
  * In most cases ( 50%), ubuntu-touch-preview opens. This seems to be
dependent of the scrolling position. Scrolling further to the right increases
the chance. If you found a position that opens the wrong link, it happens on
100% of tries. Some other links open links that are below, sometimes even two
lines away (up or down).

Double tapping the page allows you to highlight links in red by
holding them afterwards (no idea what that is good for). The red
highlighting is always correct, but nonetheless wrong links get opened
(can be seen by the grey overlay).

Also happens on Apache-generated directory listings on other sites.
