[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376802] [NEW] memory leak in something
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg This could be video driver/metacity/xorg related - I'm not sure at this point. Anyhow, firing up inkscape and just resizing the window for a minute pushes Xorgs appparent memory use up by about 10MB. Closing inkscape doesn't release the memory. I'm quite sure this is actually leaked somewhere - when it was up to 1.4GB my machine was nearly unusable even after closing all X applications. I couldn't properly check if it was userspace or not because of bug 376798, which may be related. This may be yet-another-dup of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /xorg-server/+bug/98783 . [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 370743] Re: [Jaunty} After upgrade cannot enable restriced (and installed) Nvidia 180.44 or (later) 180.53 driver. No Joy.
I have resolved this. Yeah, it surprised me too. I had to completely purge all of nvidia-glx and associated components from my system. This is how I did it. Shut down gdm, or kdm if appropriate sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop at black screen, go to login ctrl + alt + f1 login at this point purge all nvidia drivers from system sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-glx* (the * gets it all) cleanup step for a file it said hadn't been completely removed sudo apt-get autoremove Install new driver at this point. Go with the 180 in my case. sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-180 configure the driver sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-glx-180 At this point reboot (sudo reboot). Everything worked on startup, even at max appearance display. *GASP* This is the first time in three upgrades that I haven't had problems. Otherwise, when the freezes people are seeing *aren't* related (and there's no evidence either way yet in the present case), lumping all the comments in a single report just makes it incredibly hard for the developers to extract relevant information from that report. @Tom, leaving the computer on overnight with X turned off is a great idea. It'll be interesting to hear what the results are. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head
I can confirm this problem on my Laptop+ext.VGA combination (Intel onboard graphic). Due to another problem with the notify-osd (positioned in the non- visible area of the virtual screen, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367947), I'm currently forced to align the top of primary with the top of the secondary screen - resulting in a non-visible area at the bottom of the second screen. Hitting the window- list on the bottom gnome-panel is quite tricky with the mouse leaving the screen. Thus, I'd be really happy if the non-visible area is not accessible for the mouse. By converting affected mouse coordinates (vertical ones in my case) to the corresponding screen height (width for horizontal screen setups), this problem should be resolved. On screen change (from sc0 to sc1): mouse.curPos= (mouse.prevPos - sc0.visMin) / (sc0.visMax - sc0.visMin) * (sc1.visMax - sc1.visMin) + sc1.visMin where visMin and visMax is the visible area of the screen. best Patrick -- Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373367 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Let me rephrase my request. SRU: minimal patch for Jaunty is attached (see comment 3) Nominating for SRU, fulfills: (1) have an obviously safe patch The patch modifies only a header file so that extern C is used when developers include the header in a C++ program. This condition is tested with #if defined(__cplusplus) || defined(c_plusplus). This change doesn't affect programs written in C, is definitely safe and will make C++ developers' life a little better. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 371863] Re: 1 black space either side of display area
@Martin, well reasoned about the aspect ratio. I also though that the virtual of 1024x768 might be too small, but it's the biggest resolution that was listed after the EDID information (but I didn't manually decode the hex EDID block). Interestingly, the Xorg.0.log actually says Output LVDS using initial mode 640x400 but in his monitors.xml sets the resolution to 1024x768, so it would be set to that upon login. I also think it is a one-off configuration bug, but I'd like to exclude the possibility that the driver was changed to VESA and that the symptoms went away because of that. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 299631] Re: Kubuntu 8.10 xserver-xorg-video-openchrome causes crash with VIA chip K8M890CE/K8N890CE
There used to be an old -via driver but it's deprecated in favor or -openchrome driver (which is the one that currently in used in Ubuntu). The OpenChrome open source project has a homepage at http://www.openchrome.org/ where bugs can be filed etc. I'm not sure if the openchrome driver has support for disabling DRI (after looking at the code I don't think it does). I think adding a xorg.conf option to disable DRI for debugging purposes would be a useful addition though (but ask the openchrome developers, I really don't know). Doing so should not be that hard actually. It's strange that they don't have this support yet, maybe I'm missing something... The openchrome driver code says: #ifdef XF86DRI pVia-directRenderingEnabled = VIADRIScreenInit(pScreen); #endif The intel driver, for comparision, supports setting DRI false and to do that it uses code like this: pI810-directRenderingDisabled = !xf86ReturnOptValBool(pI810-Options, OPTION_DRI, TRUE); ... pI810-directRenderingEnabled = !pI810-directRenderingDisabled; if (pI810-directRenderingEnabled==TRUE) pI810-directRenderingEnabled = I810DRIScreenInit(pScreen); -- Kubuntu 8.10 xserver-xorg-video-openchrome causes crash with VIA chip K8M890CE/K8N890CE https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299631 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd
You have GM45 chipset. Some of the newer chipsets don't list the numbers and names in the lspci, so I prefer to look in Xorg.0.log. But is it supposed to be an affected chipset? Before of the workaround-upload I had a lot of freezes: now they are quiet rare. If I have a further freeze should, I open a new bug report? I don't know if it is supposed to be. That is, I don't know if the driver treats the 965GM and GM45 differently in any way. What I do know is that the function IS_I965G in the driver returns true for the GM45 chipset (see my first long comment on bug 370777), so it may be similar enough that it is the same underlying problem. The workaround uses the IS_I965G function to decide whether to apply it or not, so it will be applied to your GM45 chipset. However, all the duplicates of this bug were reported on 965GM chipsets, so I think it is best to keep it separate until proven otherwise (or someone who knows the hardware and the driver well says that they're basically the same). If you can get GPU dumps from a freeze using the 2.7.1 driver from the x-updates PPA (Personal Package Archive) and file it in a separate bug report, I think that may be helpful. -- [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374459] Re: touchpad can be switched off, but not on again
@bmhm. OK, thanks for the clarification. While we wait for the Ubuntu kernel team to have a look at this bug; let's open an upstream bug at fdo as well. I don't know enough about touchpads to say in what component this bug is hiding, but I believe the logs etc you have provided should be sufficient for a developer to have a look at it. Can you please open a bug at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/ with a clean summary of the logs and what we found out about the modprobe etc. Report the bug against xorg and set the component to Input/Synaptics. Once you have created an upstream bug, use the link Also affects project near the top of the Launchpad bug and paste the upstream URL in there. This will link the two bug reports so that the Ubuntu packagers get an automatic notification whenever upstream fixes the bug. Should xorg upstream conclude that it's not a bug in the synaptics xorg package we can open a similar upstream bug report against bugzilla.kernel.org instead... I'd prefer if the Ubuntu kernel team had a look at this bug first though, so we know for sure that this bug report has all the data that the upstream kernel developers are likely to need for their analysis. -- touchpad can be switched off, but not on again https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/374459 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xfree86-driver-synaptics in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359245] Re: Jaunty X highly unstable
I have been having the exact same problem. My system was rock solid in Intrepid (running for weeks at a time), but now it doesn't even survive for 12 hours of uptime. My system is an Aspire 6930 with an Intel CPU and an NVIDIA graphics card. I am using the same major release of the video card driver (180). There are no other binary drivers in use. The problem is getting so bad that it has corrupted my hard drive twice (one partition, then two partitions the second time). I started using Jaunty in the Beta stage and noticed a known-bug was the unstable X server on intel graphics chips, so when I started having problems I simply assumed it was also affecting some Nvidia chips as well. But now that it's near the end of May, I'm starting to think this is a bit bigger of a problem than I had originally throught. -- Jaunty X highly unstable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359245 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
