2009-06-29 Thread Eric Appleman
Here's a rather fascinating workaround(?) that can guarantee (on my
laptop at the very least) tear-free playback in MPlayer without the need
for any further tricks:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
false

Kernel: 2.6.30 (2.6.31-rc1 works too!)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-06-29 Thread Yuriy Polezhayev
Confirmed on HIS Radeon HD 3870 IceQ3 Turbo with proprietary drivers and Ubuntu
9.04
1-3 seconds delay before [mini/maxi]mizing a window. Sound buffer fill stops
during this pause.

107_fedora_dont_backfill_bg_none.patch did the job. Delays disappeared.

I think, there is a reason why this patch suits one and doesn't suit another.
Maybe it Depends on video bios? 6 months passed after I bought this card before
a working bios was released. Before that the card has troubles with cooling
(fan speed control failed), GPU overclocking, video crashed in 3D mode
independent from GPU temp. and speed. But as I just thought It might be more
possible that the driver version matters. Some cards (26xx 34xx) may have older
driver versions or smth. It was just a guess :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392410] Re: MIRs for UNR packages

2009-06-29 Thread Steve Kowalik
Clutter:

1. Availability: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/clutter;
available for all architectures except for armel -- I suspect the armel build
failure could be corrected with a no-change upload.
2. Rationale:
* Dependency of netbook-launcher
3. Security:
* No CVE entries: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=clutter
* Secunia history: http://secunia.com/search/?search=clutter
* No binaries, only shared libraries.
* No network activity.
* No processing of binary data.
* No source code review.
4. Quality assurance:
* Package works out of the box in all situations.
* No debconfage.
* No Debian bugs.
* Maintaince in Debian is calm, we tend to package it ourselves.
* Upstream is vigorous.
* Could not locate an upstream bug tracker.
* This package deals with 3D acceleration, so works better with a card that
deals with that.
* A test suite is present, but doesn't look to run during the build -- may
require graphics to do so.
5. UI standards:
* User-visible strings are internationalized using standard gettext system
? Yes
* Package with translatable strings builds a PO template during package
build ? Yes
* End-user applications ship a desktop file ? It's a library.
6. Standards compliance:
* Complies with Debian Policy and the FHS.
* Bog-standard CDBS with debhelper, no patch system or oddities.
7. Dependencies:
* All Build-Depends and Depends are in main.
8. Maintenance:
* How much maintenance is this package likely to need? Upstream are very
responsive, so updating to the latest version is nice, but that isn't much work.
* Who is responsible for monitoring the quality of this package and fixing
its bugs? The mobile team.
9. Background information:
* From what I can see, upstream call it clutter, and it hasn't had any
other names.
10. Internationalization:
* Are graphical applications translatable? Do they support gettext? Yes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392804] Re: libdrm2 missing/conflicts with fglrx-*-8.620-0ubuntu1~jaunty

2009-06-29 Thread bamyasi
I have originally installed fglrx packages from X Updates PPA (X-SWAT,
not xorg-edgers). I've commented out XUp PPA line in my
/etc/apt/sources.list, run apt-get autoclean, then uncommented XUp repo
again and did an apt-get update. Now apt-get dist-upgrade does not
suggest any updates at all, and apt-cache policy fglrx-kernel-source
does not show anything from XUp available, even though XUp page at
Launchpad lists new fglrx packages as having been released three days
ago. I am sorry if I filed this problem in the wrong place but I can't
find any XUp specific bug tracker and this URL is listed as suggested
place to file user bug reports in XUp fglrx packages. Here's what apt-
cache policy shows now for libdrm2 on my system:

# apt-cache policy libdrm2
libdrm2:
  Installed: 2.4.9-1ubuntu1~xup~1
  Candidate: 2.4.9-1ubuntu1~xup~1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 309638] Re: [M76] [fglrx] resume from stand by / hibernate fails on Intrepid 64 on 4GB of RAM

2009-06-29 Thread Phasmagon
In intrepid, which is the version which the bug was filed against, the
issue is not resolved. By quick testing (meaning just installing and
watching what happens) the problem seems to be exactly the same. 2G of
RAM everything is fine. 4G never resumes.

In jaunty, again, nothing interesting happens. But it seems to me that
in jaunty there is a quite different problem (probably I should file a
bug report). Hibernation actually WORKS with both the release fglrx
package, and the one provided by the PPA (and the one provided straight
by ATI). The problem in jaunty is that suspend resumes to a blank screen
ALWAYS. No matter how much ram is installed.

It looks like that the same thing happens to karmic, though to be sure,
I have to retest, because my current testing environment is quite a
mess.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 252094] Re: MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-06-29 Thread JoseLVG
Last time I tested with last intel, X and kernel 2.6.30 (rc7?) versions
available the results were poor and not stable.
Has anyone got it working fine? (no render errors and good fps on
googleearth and tux racer?)
Has anyone got it working fine on a eee 901?

I think we can close this one now. The issue is largely resolved in
Karmic, and the commentary on this bug seems to have degenerated past
usefulness. Other bug reports are tracking kernel patches and other
 fixes proposed for Jaunty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374458] Re: Random Logitech Wireless Mouse Freeze (Kubuntu 9.04)

2009-06-29 Thread chris dock
I am using using ubuntu 9.04 64 bit ( not kubuntu) but I have an
interesting observation.

With all the talk about nvidia drivers i managed to start the nvidia tool ( i
have version 180 installed)
and shortly after that I was having problems where the mouse button was
non-responsive. I did notice
that when I clicked on things within that application, the mouse was being
properly recognized but
I was not able to click on the close button.

The interesting part is when I clicked on the system menu, it reset my menu
selection within the
nvidia app to the first item. The mouse cursor does move anywhere on the
screen but it seems
that the nvidia app ( or probably any application ) is not releasing the mouse,
is still the only
recipient of the interrupts or mouse click messages.

After closing the nvidia app with alt-f4, then the mouse was able to be
recognized by the system
menu.

Hei guys

I am new in ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty and I have just installed :

Kernel .6.28-13-generic (#44-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 2 07:57:31 UTC 2009)

in a AMD Athlon 64 , mother board Gigabyte (GA-K8N51GMF-9)
 with Nvidia 6100

now the crazy question..

Should I install the drivers from the producers pages for all these
hardware?? or I can work as it is now??

I can read that even there are special drivers for linux for my
processor, are they installed automatically or I have to do it
manually??sound has lower quality than using windows and I believe
the graphics are poor and slow.

thanks

2009-06-29 Thread tmokeefe
All I can say is that at one point I was graspong at straws trying to get
OpenGL + resume working. I compiled the open source radeonhd driver several
times (several minor point releases) and I installed the fglrx from
ati.coma few times (9.4, 9.5 9.6).

Not sure if/when either of those might have upgraded libdrm.

 My Problem:
When desktop effects are enabled and compositing type is set to OpenGL,
resume from suspend-to-ram fails. The resume results in a black screen with
some colored lines at the top of the display. The machine appears to be hung
i.e. no VT and a hard reboot is necessary.

 Temporary Solution:
Normal resume behavior may be achieved by either 1) disabling desktop
effects or 2) setting the compositing type to XRender, which is
unfortunately much more limited in functionality than OpenGL.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 112238] Re: mga driver no longer will display 1600x1200

2009-06-29 Thread cnobile
Yes, this fits in with my experiences. When I first had this problem I
compiled a version of the driver that I knew worked correctly on a
previous install of Linux and it still didn't work with my current
install, so I concluded that somehow the server itself was doing the
wrong thing with the MGA driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 393503] [NEW] Performance-related changes made by Debian to libxcb 1.1

2009-06-29 Thread Andrew Pollock
Public bug reported:

Debian has recently made a 1.1-1.2 release of libxcb to stable. Since
Hardy derived from the same version and is LTS, I thought these changes
might be worth also applying to Hardy.

The changelog for 1.1-1.2 reads:

libxcb (1.1-1.2) stable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload to fix important performance issues
(closes: #487635).
  * Fix some fd leaks in _xcb_open_*()
  * Increase libxcb buffer size to 16k from 4k
  * Disable Nagle on TCP socket

 -- Julien Cristau jcris...@debian.org Wed, 27 May 2009 20:06:47

If you do make an SRU containing these changes, please also ensure that
the version in ia32-libs is updated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384641] Re: Karmic touchpad settings disabled tap to click

2009-06-29 Thread alain57
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 378391 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378391

hi
if tap to click is disabled to copy mac, then it is a very bad idea !

i use a real mouse, but my batteries died, so i was trying to work with
my touchpad and it's horrible without tap to click... (my netbooks
buttons are not very good positioned)

i tried karmic on an other notebook (a 15,6 brand new acer) and once again its
horrible
with tap to click = no noise
without it, and using buttons = i can't use the notebook at night because the
noise wakes up my girlfriend

but well it must be a bug, because on the system preferences the fonction is
enabled (on mouse)
but in fact it was not ...
i needed to install gsynaptics to really enable the function

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 393509] [NEW] Applications that use libxcb 1.1 cannot open more than 1024 files

2009-06-29 Thread Andrew Pollock
Public bug reported:

Hi,

We have some internal 32-bit applications that end up with a lot of
files open. If they in turn call a program that links with libxcb, more
often than not, that program segfaults.

This has been determined to be because libxcb uses select() and the man
page for select() says this:

An fd_set is a fixed size buffer. Executing FD_CLR() or FD_SET()
with a value of fd that is negative or is equal to or larger than
FD_SETSIZE will result in undefined behavior. Moreover, POSIX requires
fd to be a valid file descriptor.

Later versions of libxcb address this by using poll()

I'm attaching the patch that we are using internally against libxcb
1.1-1.1

If you make this SRU, please also ensure that the 32-bit version in
ia32-libs gets updated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 356510] Re: [i965] Wierd backlight brightness behaviour looks like flashes on Amilo Si 2636

2009-06-29 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Bernhard, thanks for testing and the feedback. Just fy, the upcoming
kernel for the Karmic release will actually target the 2.6.31 kernel.
Since the 2.6.30 kernel sounds promising to fix this issue, I wouldn't
expect this issue to regress when the kernel is bumped to 2.6.31. The
2.6.30 based kernels are already available for testing in the Karmic
Alpha releases, so for now I'm marking the linux (Ubuntu) task as Fix
Released. However, if you do notice the issue return when using these
newer kernels, please feel free to reopen this bug (ie set the Status
from Fix Released back to New). Thanks.

good. I will report back if I see the problem again.

Thanks for your attention to this issue.

From your Xorg.0.log file I read that you have connected two monitors:

Do you have two connected monitors ?

Duoview is not implemented yet, so try to enable only one monitor.

Why do you think that resolution 1280x800 is not supported?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391195] Re: [VX800] no 1280x800 resolution support

2009-06-29 Thread aanno
Dear Bartosz,

well, I'm not aware of a second monitor with this netbook (must be very
hidden :O)). But - apart from the built-in TFT - there is a VGA
connector. Maybe this is what you see in the log. Is there a way to
disable it in xorg.conf?

The problem is that the stock openchrome just does not work. I think the
resolution is not supported because of the

(II) CHROME(0): Not using mode 1280x800 (no mode of this name)

line in the (first) Xorg.1.log. In addition, I have not been able to use
the openchrome so far...

With openchrome from svn, there *is* a test picture. But as I said, this
is not a fully functional X11...

Cheers,

aanno

The tap to click touchpad settings in the gnome-settings-daemon mouse
capplet only work when tap to click is already enabled right now. You
can just do synclient TapButton1=1 (make a shortcut to it in a menu or
start it with your session, or just type it for now...) to enable
tapping. gnome-settings-daemon 2.27.4 will handle enabling/disabling
tapping correctly when it is released.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379157] Re: [i945G] Samsung TV not detected on VGA output (no screens)

2009-06-29 Thread Jordi Puigsegur
Hi Geir,

I am using the packages you placed on http://www.kvante.info/LP379157/.
I downloaded them and install them using dpkg.

I did as you asked me: Installed 0ubuntu0sarvatt, rebooted (X don't
work), installed 0ubuntu2gomyhr and then I tried to restart gdm and the
result is (copied from console):

$ /etc/init.d/gdm restart
 * Stopping GNOME Display Manager... [ OK ]
 * Starting GNOME Display Manager... [fail]

And no Xorg.0.log is produced. Then I reboot the computer and this time
doesn't hang up. I attach both Xorg.0.log with mode debug activated.

2009-06-29 Thread Tomas Pospisek
With the old 2.4 intel driver [1] I get both suspend and video working
again.

I also tried the PPA 2.7.1-0ubuntu1~xup~1 [2] package with Option
AccelMethod UXA as described in [3] . Video playback worked, suspend
worked too, however resume would come back with a black screen.
Switching between terminals would only restart Xorg (audible by hearing
the Ubuntu bongos from the login screen), the screen would flicker and
back to a black screen without any intermediary visible screen. However,
strangely enough shuting down the laptopo would come back to Ubuntu's
graphical shutdown screen...

Here [4] is a bug report from Debian, that could be related. It links to an
upstream report that looks quite similiar wrt symptoms [5].

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392804] Re: libdrm2 missing/conflicts with fglrx-*-8.620-0ubuntu1~jaunty

2009-06-29 Thread Robert Hooker
The problem was fglrx-installer got binary copied from xorg-edgers to
x-updates for some reason so it kept the libdrm dependencies from xorg-
edgers. Looking at it more I think it happened because the orig.tar.gz's
dont match between karmics and jauntys in there so it was preventing
rebuilds :) Fixing it up now.

while the system is completely useable. So - still waiting for
definitive solution of this one...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 362359] Re: Focus gets stuck to a window - impossible to select other windows

2009-06-29 Thread Zach Shepherd
I don't have enough trials to rule out coincidence, but it seems to
happen to me only when I have a web cam connected. I can't figure out
what the connection is, but I was experiencing the problem with one
camera, disconnected the camera and returned it because of unrelated
issues, and didn't experience the issue again until I had connected a
(different) camera.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385658] Re: karmic alpha2 candidate doesn't boot up on Studio XPS 1340

2009-06-29 Thread Mario Limonciello
Hi Robert:

I've removed the nv.ids from /usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci (if there was
more that your package does, i'll add your package on too - it's just
harder to test from a PPA behind a network requiring proxy
authentication).

Still have failures, here's the Xorg.0.log from that scenario:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 393623] [NEW] Can't play multimedia video (i.e., *.ogg, *.flv, *.wmv) when external monitor is connected

2009-06-29 Thread Shannon VanWagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When I have an external monitor attached, I can't play multimedia video
(i.e., *.ogg, *.flv, *.wmv) in any player (i.e., totem, vlc, mplayer,
gxine, etc.).

The behavior is that when the player(i.e., totem, vlc, mplayer, gxine,
etc.) is launched, the player window shows momentarily, and then it
crashes before playing the video.

When running from the command line, a command such as totem-gstreamer
somemovie.ogg, or even vlc somemovie.ogg, the player crashes and the
following error msg is displayed:The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient
resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 139 error_code 11
request_code 132 minor_code 19).

I've used the suggested method to report this bug.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

2009-06-29 Thread Robert Hooker
Ahh its ok, that should have the same effect. How about if you delete
/etc/X11/xorg.conf entirely? xorg.conf is going away real soon now, if
it works without it great, if not a simple little patch in the detection
logic for xserver to match 10DE 086x pci id's to vesa will do it.
