[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391418] Re: [i945] [Ubuntu-X-Swat] 945GM Unable to load desktop > 2048x2048 with UXA

2009-07-13 Thread noisymime
This may become a problem for 9.10 as the fix in the upstream bug has
both a driver and kernel portion. Assuming karmic is planning to release
with 2.6.30, the fix that has been pushed to 2.6.31 will not apply and
the problem will remain.

Given that karmic only has UXA available, this will mean i945 users will
be unable to get a desktop larger than 2048x2048 on 9.10 at all.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352708] Re: [i915] (Needs KMS) dualscreen: some screen stays dark after suspend/resume via lid

2009-07-13 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I am very sorry to say that this bug has recently cropped up with Karmic
and KMS as well. If I suspend with lid, after resume resolutions are
totally wrong and sometimes the displays are garbled. If I use suspend
from the shutdown menu, all goes well.

I suspect this is the same bug, because it's strongly dependant on using
the lid.

feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could,
please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399111] [NEW] X.Org takes a lot of CPU and makes the system unusable for a graphical session.

2009-07-13 Thread Juan Sebastián Marulanda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After a series of upgrades, I restarted and found that my system is very
sluggish, I'm unable to use a graphical session since everything seems
frozen, even making a selection is practically impossible. After
checking in htop, I found that X is taking most of my CPU load, around
60%. This isn't normal since my processor has been more than capable for
using my desktop as it is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 396171] Re: after installing latest x-swat intel driver for Karmic, screen is sometimes corrupted

2009-07-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 398026 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/398026

I agree with Geir's assessment that Chris' bug is the one we should take
upstream, so I'm reversing the dupe on this, even though this one was
reported first. Hopefully whatever solves Chris' problem will do this
one too, but on the off chance it doesn't, please un-dupe this one and
we'll investigate further.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359578] Re: [g45] Warzone 2100 3D is rendered black with GMA4500MHD

2009-07-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/. If you can reproduce it in
the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed
system. Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg from this
testing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398968] Re: [i945GM] X server gets stuck in loop waiting on DRI, reads mouse events but ignores all socket I/O hence appears frozen

2009-07-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Jamie, excellent analysis work. I can share some additional
background and analysis we've done on this class of bug.

A lot of people have found that the 2.6 driver series simply does not
work properly for them, and opt to either upgrade to 2.7 or downgrade to
2.4. We have PPAs providing packages for each of these options, in the
x-updates and x-retro PPAs here:

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat

If you want to focus on identifying the root cause of the issue, I've
written up some additional troubleshooting tips at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze which may be of some
use.

I also put together some tools that help in diagnosis x freeze errors:
  https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-freeze-test/

Unfortunately, we had found in the run-up to the Jaunty release that
most of the patches we tried that fixed a problem for one group, would
cause some unpredictable breakages for other folks with different
hardware; thus we're being extraordinarily conservative of introducing
patches for Jaunty's -intel, and focusing efforts towards getting the
issues resolved in the newer versions of the code, so Karmic is a solid
upgrade for everyone.

On that note, I would also encourage you to give a try of reproducing
the issue on Karmic. Running a LiveCD of alpha-2 or a daily might be
worth trying, although I know with these freeze bugs often it can take
many hours or several days to reproduce the issue and running a livecd
may be impractical.

The good news though is that so far we're seeing huge improvements in
the Karmic -intel driver. A ton of the most pervasive bugs have
vanished, and while there are still of course some problems, they seem
more of the corner case variety and seem to be getting good attention
when reported upstream.

If you do want to help chase down a patch for Jaunty for this issue,
I'll be happy to review and package it for Karmic and arrange to get
sufficient testing that we can prove it to be safe. On the other hand,
if you're satisfied with one of the other options listed above, we can
consider that the fix.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398594] Re: [g45] X crash playing video on GM45

2009-07-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
Heya Bruce,

I'm not sure either why libdrm-intel1-dbg did not show the first four
symbols; perhaps try libdrm2-dbg as well.

I965DisplayVideoTextured sounds like it is a crash occurring with compiz
on, is that correct?

The version of -intel in Karmic has a ton of bug fixes over the version
in Jaunty (the dev team was doing major rearchitecting in Jaunty, moving
large chunks of X into the kernel). We have some backports of the newer
drivers in the x-updates PPA:

   https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

and even newer versions in the xorg-edgers PPA:

   https://edge.launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

If either of those work, probably no need to test against karmic. If
they do not solve it, you could also try a newer kernel. From our
testing, the -intel 2.6.99 + kernel 2.6.31 seems to be the killer combo
and has resolved a ton of problems on -intel. If you want to install
the full Karmic on your machine, note that Alpha-2 has been found to be
reasonably stable (particularly for -intel users who are having problems
in Jaunty).

I'm currently using 8.10. Downgraded because my older computer - Dell

even change the screensaver as it automatically freezes the whole

2009-07-13 Thread Kimiko Koopman
You can fix it temporarily by commenting out the calls to find_task_by_*
in /usr/src/fglrx-8.620/firegl_public.c and replacing them with a 0,
then use dkms to recompile/install the module. It probably breaks
something in horrible ways, but at least you'll be able to use X again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 393031] Re: [i855] Resolution change breaks graphics in Intel 855GM

2009-07-13 Thread Benedikt Kristinsson
New info. I tried reverting xserver-xorg-video-intel to 2.4 according to
this wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4 and
experienced minor enchaced performance.

I rolled those changes back, and tried another suggested method
involding upagrading the kernel to 2.6.30 with the X Updates PPA
repository and enabling UXA, all according to this form post (Optimal
configuration, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582) and i
still only experince minor fixes. I can now play Flash fullscreen. The
the resolution still brakes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 382017] Re: [i845] xorg intel driver 2.7.99 36% slower than 2.7.0 on i845

2009-07-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi jerrylamos,

I've forwarded your bug upstream to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22759 - I've subscribed you
to it in case upstream needs further info.

Two more things I'd ask you to do:

First, please attach to the upstream bug report an example Xorg.0.log
from one of the 2.7.99 cases, as it may have info upstream needs for
debugging the problem.

Second, could you re-run your tests against current updated Karmic with
the 2.6.31 kernel? There were a *ton* of -intel driver fixes in .31
that fixed regressions seen in .30, so it is important to verify whether
this issue is still present in .31.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

Well, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/. If you can reproduce it in
the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed
system. Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg from this
testing.

Yeah, mixing the karmic kernel on jaunty gets you into sort of a wacky
state, that might be useful for testing but certainly not a
configuration that could be easily supported.

See if the issue can be reproduced with a pure karmic system (perhaps
using a LiveCD), and if not we can probably just consider the case
closed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384333] Re: [i915gm] Xorg infinite loop, backtrace thru synaptics driver

2009-07-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
Based on your latest findings and how they differ from your original
symptoms, it sounds a lot like you're having a new bug unrelated to your
original one. For instance, SSH worked previously (which is typical
with X freezes), but this time you lost SSH (which typically indicates a
kernel freeze of some sort). The original one sounds like a pretty bog
standard X freeze with compiz enabled that was unfortunately quite
common on Jaunty but now is largely solved. Also, I would refer you to
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting, which has some guides for
debugging X freezes and other issues.

Because of this I'm going to close this bug report. If you can
reproduce the new issue with fully updated Karmic, please report a new
bug against the linux kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399027] [NEW] xorg memory consumption

2009-07-13 Thread Jon Mason
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

Xorg memory consumption grows continuously with firefox usage. However,
after closing firefox xorg consumption is not decreased. A new firefox
instance will grow xorg memory usage further. Closing it again does not
reduce xorg memory usage. Eventually all free memory is used and it
will start to swap.

The setup that shows this behavior has dual monitors and is using the
fglrx driver. My other setup does not have this issue with similar
usage but only 1 monitor.

Current usage is
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND

 3742 root 20 0 2441m 814m 18m S 28 27.3 142:07.08 Xorg

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374718] Re: calls to glX* functions leak memory

2009-07-13 Thread apianti
it actually does not fix any problems in fact i think it creates more... i
tried using karmic, however it is now totally unusable with fglrx, even using
kernel 2.6.30. after about ten to fifteen minutes the memory has become so
corrupt that the system is unresponsive and syslog is flooded with errors about
how there's a mismatch on kernel map information or something... so for now
i've gone back to jaunty, although jaunty still has the memory leaks and after
about an hour either the window manager (compiz) crashes or the whole screen
hangs but everything else still functions, i.e. sound still works, keys still
work, i can click stuff and it does what its supposed to but the screen doesn't
update, it stays frozen. on the other hand accelerated video finally works...
oh well, i know this won't get fixed for like eight more version because ati's
driver development is awful

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399014] [NEW] gnome-mouse-properties crashes x-server

2009-07-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When I launch gnome-mouse-properties it crashes x-server.
I have:

2. Launched from Terminal using sudo gnome-mouse-properties
3. Reinstalled gnome-control-center

I have launched several other property windows to see if they have a
problem but nothing else has crashed X like gnome-mouse-properites has.

Lenovo X60 Tablet
Ubuntu 9.04

Hello Kai,

I've forwarded your bug upstream to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22753 - please subscribe to
this bug in case upstream needs further information or wishes you to
test something. Thanks ahead of time.

Also, there have been a number of fixes put into the driver (and kernel)
this past month. Would you mind re-testing with the latest Karmic and
verifying it is still an issue?
