[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-01-11 Thread Adam
Not sure, but I may have a different problem at this point? I am not
getting far enough to freeze. Ever since the fresh install of Karmic - I
always get a black screen on boot just after the white loading ubuntu
logo and I never get the login screen. Numlock & caps lock
unresponsive. Can't Ctrl+Alt+F1 to terminal. Have to hold in the power
button for a hard reset. I've even reverted back to the current
versions from the main repository (both xserver-xorg-video-intel &
libdrm2). Same results.

Now I am not sure if this is related, but I also get a lot these annoying
messages over and over again during boot into recovery-
serial 18250: too much work for irq 17
(Sounds like I am not the only one-
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1330029)

I tried using the tiling "false" option in the xorg.conf, no difference.

So I have tried the steps in this page-
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen
Workaround A: Creating an xorg.conf and using the vesa driver - X starts fine
and I can login, everything is okay (HUGE but everything works okay)
Workaround B: Changing resolutions in xorg.conf - no noticeable difference
Workaround C: Disabling usplash - I don't get the white ubuntu logo, but still
locks up

Not sure what to do at this point. Same issue or something else? I
don't want to confuse things further, so if I am too far off here and
should create a new bug report, please let me know! Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 506248] Re: [i965] X/gdm produce blank screen on startup after karmic upgrade

2010-01-11 Thread David Fraser
apt-get install --reinstall gdm seems to have fixed this.
(Although I was puzzled for a long time by gdm refusing to start with a "start
gdm" because I'd booted in single mode - that inhibitor shouldn't run when a
manual start command is issued, surely?)

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 390917 ***

David,

Look at the duplicate bug thread and this thread showing it's a problem
with the intel driver for more.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22383.

I think you're right that my direct call fix only "sortof" works as I do
get problems with blank screen and blinking suspend light on occasion...
that I can usually resolve by opening and closing the lid a few times.

Banging with a hammer may work but I have not confirmed that fix... yet.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 506248] [NEW] [i965] X/gdm produce blank screen on startup after karmic upgrade

2010-01-11 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1525 from Jaunty to Karmic (I still have a
Jaunty installation on another partition).
The Karmic Live DVD works absolutely fine with my display.
However, in my upgraded Karmic partition I have been unable to obtain a usable
X display.
Immediately on startup X goes blank and seems to freeze.
I have tried with the failover config, with no config, with vesa config, all to
no avail
I have also run X directly with -logverbose 9 -verbose 9 to test. I can ssh
into the machine but it sometimes freezes after starting X so that my ssh
session dies (although at least once it was still pingable)
I noticed that in /var/log/gdm/:0.log there are errors about MTRR, and that
there is a difference between /proc/mtrr on jaunty and karmic, and also that
lspci -vv returns different information on Jaunty and Karmic
I will attach some of the logs I currently have...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 506250] [NEW] corrupt graphics

2010-01-11 Thread PhilippeDePass
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Corrupt graphics in both kubuntu-9.10 and ubuntu-9.10 with xorg

Graphics card is "ATI Radeon Mobility M6 L7" using driver "radeon"

The "vesa" driver works fine, but there is no hardware acceleration and

I keep my settings from my original xorg.conf file around to copy &
paste into a new xorg.conf whenever I reinstall Ubuntu. Otherwise, I
wouldn't be able to enable the Nvidia drivers properly with it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 506069] Re: X server crashes with "Saw signal 11. Server aborting"

2010-01-11 Thread Thag
Here's one thing that I do a lot that's a bit non-standard, perhaps it
has some effect.

I create a mongo eclipse window that spans 2 twinview screens. I can say
that every time that it's happened, that eclipse window has been there.
(As well as a lot of other stuff...)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-01-11 Thread Brian Rogers
Since most people are getting the freeze randomly, it's possible for it
to seem stable purely by chance and not because you're running a good
version. I believe that happened with 2.8.0.901, which has now been
reported as both good and bad.

So it helps to have as many testers as possible. We want as many chances
as possible to catch bad versions. If someone reports a freeze, we have
to go backward, not forward, through the revision history to find the
first bad commit. I've now backed the version up to 2.8.0-1-g2463865 due
to the report of a freeze.

Does it freeze for anyone with this version?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505271] Re: [gm45] "*ERROR* Execbuf while wedged" when closing laptop lid with compiz running

2010-01-11 Thread Kai Jauch
I tried it several times more, sometimes the vt-switching workaround was
working, sometimes it wasn't. I tried opening the lid immediately after closing
it, waiting a bit before opening it and even tried running glxgears while I was
closing it, I couldn't find a pattern.
I even got 2.9.1-1ubuntu1 to work with the vt-switching :/ This is also
happening on a fresh and up-to-date installation of Lucid I did for reference.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474955] [NEW] Video output distorted when changing display mode from HP laptop screen to Panasonic Projector (NVIDIA driver 185)

2010-01-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Issue summary:
When a projector is plugged-in to the VGA port of my HP laptop, I can press
and the display mode toggles from my laptop screen to the
projector. This worked successfully with Ubuntu 8.10. However, with Ubuntu
9.10, the result is that the video output is distorted. I am working-around
this issue by going in to the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet and manually
setting up TwinView so that my laptop is configured for two displays: one is
the laptop screen and the other is my projector. I manually set the resolution
for the projector to be 1024x768.

Expected Functionality:
When I toggle the display mode from my laptop screen to the projector, Ubuntu
detects that the projector needs a lower resolution than that which runs
natively on the laptop and scales it down appropriately. The scaled-down video
output to the projector is clear and not distorted.

Settings Details:
Laptop native resolution: 1920x1200
Projector native resolution: 1024x768

Hardware Details:
HP Compaq 8510w laptop
NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M graphics card
Panasonic PT-LB80 projector

Software Details:
Ubuntu 9.10 (issue also reproducible in Ubuntu 9.04)
NVIDIA driver 185 (proprietary)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477099] [NEW] Upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 breaks the driver for Genius G-Pen M712 Tablet

2010-01-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In Ubuntu 9.04 the "GeniusMousePen-Driver_0.7.0.i386" was working just fine
with my Genius M712 Tablet, pressure & full dual screen area. when upgrading
to Ubuntu 9.10 & even when Installing it as a fresh install (I tried them both)
the tablet response to the pen is totally missed up.. The cursor moves when the
pen is in proximity to the tablet as it should but once the pen is pressed
against the tablet the proximity movement is gone & the only way to move the
cursor is to keep the pressure on the tablet while moving which clearly renders
the tablet useless, the buttons are gone & clicking by tabbing the tablet with
the pen is not working & as a last note the screen area for the tablet is less
than full screen.
My "99-x11-wizardpen.fdi" content which was working perfectly good on ubuntu
9.04 is:

wizardpen
stylus
true
5619
6554
29405
29671
29405
29671

I did also try the "wizardpen_0.7.0-alpha2_i386" with no use.
reinstalling back ubuntu 9.04 with the 0.7.0 driver & the previous
"99-x11-wizardpen.fdi" file made the tablet work just fine once more... I
couldn't find the site for the development of the drive to post a bug report
there too but will try to look for it again & if I found it I'll post this
report there too.

 can be viewed without scrolling.
   - Fixed a recent regression that caused the Xinerama option to not
be set properly in the X configuration file when saving and
merging from the nvidia-settings X Server Display Configuration
 page.
   - Fixed a resource leak in VDPAU's blit-based presentation queue.
This bug limited the number of presentation queue objects that
could be created and destroyed in a single application instance,
and hence could limit the number of streams that could be
displayed and/or the number of iterations of "loop" playback.
   - Fixed a power management regression that prevented some notebooks
and systems with integrated GeForce 8 and 9 series GPUs from
 suspending.
   - Fixed a regression that caused TV-OUT controls to be unavailable
on some GeForce 6 and 7 series GPUs.
   - Updated the NVIDIA X driver to allow, on GeForce 8 or greater
GPUs, more modes to validate on digital display devices whose
EDIDs report very constrained HorizSync or VertRefresh ranges.
   - Fixed a randomly occuring X server crash caused by the PixmapCache
 option.
   - Increased the allowed amount of overscan compensation from 100 to
 200.
   - On GPUs with VDPAU feature set B, VDPAU's handling of some
corrupted or incorrectly formatted H.264 and MPEG streams has
 been improved.
   - Fixed a memory allocation problem with pre-GeForce 8 GPUs that
 caused GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap clients (e.g., Compiz, KDE 4)
 to display incorrect contents.
   - Modified the installation location and names of internal VDPAU
libraries to conform to conventions and Debian packaging guidelines.
New versions of libvdpau expect this layout. Compatibility with old
versions of libvdpau is maintained with symlinks.
   - Fixed a bug that could cause errors in graphical applications run
after a previous application using VDPAU and OpenGL. This behaviour
was observed when running Gwenole Beauchesne's hwdecode-demos
 application.
   - Modified vdpau.h to increment VDPAU_VERSION, to reflect the fact that
new features have been added in the past. Also, add the new define
 VDPAU_INTERFACE_VERSION.
   - Fixed a periodic temporary hang in the VDPAU blit-based presentation
 queue.
   - Fixed a problem that caused resolution limitations or corruption on
certain DisplayPort devices such as the Apple 24" Cinema display or
 some DisplayPort to VGA adapters.
   - Disabled the UseEvents option for GeForce 8 series and higher GPUs
due to a problem that causes occasional short hangs. It will be
re-enabled when that bug has been tracked down and fixed.
   - VDPAU now allows multiple streams to be decoded at once, without the
need to set any environment variables.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 240916] Re: can't configure display resolution (monitor, graphics card) manually in gui

2010-01-11 Thread mahjongg
I was finally able to give an old laptop the 1024 x 768 resolution I
knew the LCD could do (from the 800 x 600 + large gray border around it
it did do because Ubuntu 9.10 did a "monitor not detected" on me) by
adding an xorg.conf text file in /etc/X11 with just the following few
lines only:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
HorizSync 60-60
VertRefresh 43-117
EndSection

Device "Configured Video Device"

See

http://invisible-island.net/xterm/xterm.faq.html#grep_colors

(since the bug is most often reported for grep)

fwiw, I checked status on that yesterday, and gnome-terminal and konsole
were the only programs on my machine that would behave as you expect. It
is a bug in those applications. As for grep, it's a shame that there's
no portable way to do what the implementor attempted to do.

Everthing else (Linux console, xterm, rxvt, pterm, mlterm) matches that
aspect of vt100-compatibility.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505271] Re: [gm45] "*ERROR* Execbuf while wedged" when closing laptop lid with compiz running

2010-01-11 Thread Kai Jauch
I was testing the 2.6.33 kernel from the mainline kernel-ppa yesterday,
but have since reverted back to 2.6.32. The funny thing is that I was
also testing xorg-edgers yesterday and IIRC I also tried vt-switching to
enable my display again, which didn't work.

I have no idea why it is working today, but it did so consistently
across several reboots.

Yes, or if you would like to try, you can try the latest
intel-drm-next kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/ . It has
this patch:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/intel-gfx/2009-December/005250.html
which should fix the problem. However, if I remember correctly,
apport-collect will only run with standard ubuntu kernels.

2010-01-11 Thread Christopher
I feel like Charlie Brown with Lucy holding the football and yanking it
away just before he kicks it. Each and every flavour since Hardy has had
a problem with this card until mature.

I have this card in my desktop, and every time I install the 185 NVIDIA
driver, it kills the OS, requiring a re-installation.

I know the purpose of Alphas is testing, but I feel a bit masochistic
when advised it has been fixed, only to have the football yanked away
again.

Each time the offending action that precipitated this was a "click" on
something.
Mind you, I click on a lot of things, so it may have been coincidental. I just
remember thinking each time "what the hell did I just click on???"

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505915] [NEW] logout at resume and swap usage (suspend to ram)

2010-01-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

I use Ubuntu 9.10 64 bits with pm-utils 1.2.5-2ubuntu7. I don't talk about
hibernation here.
I can suspend to ram and resume, but sometimes, I have to do a new login (my
session is not always saved). I didn't have this problem in Hardy 64 bits.

I'm not sure, but It seems to be related to swap partition. I have 2 Gb
RAM. Initially, I had 1 Gb swap. The problem was reproducible when more
RAM was used (say VBox+other things for about 1.5 Gb usage) but happened
more randomly even with low ram usage. Then I had the idea to increase
the swap to 2 Gb. Magic: the problem disappeared... until I started to
use "fast user switch". With 2 or 3 sessions opened (even with few
applications) I often loose one of them (mine...) after a resume. I
tried to add another 1 Gb swap partition (3 Gb total). The problem is
still present and I'm not sure if it's better with 3 Gb than with 2 Gb.

Conclusion:
1) swap seems to be used with suspend to ram, which seems abnormal
2) logout happen sometimes at resume, at least for the admin user, even with a
decent swap partition.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-01-11 Thread shadetree
"Shadetree, do you mean you're using the configuration described in the
guide on your 9.04 machines? What are you dual-booting them with,
Windows, Karmic, or something else entirely? I ask only out of
curiosity."

I'm multi boot testing 8.04, 9.04, 9.10 32/64bit partitions on various
xp, xp pro, vista & 7 PC's.

Yes, I use "optimal configurations, set tiling to false" on the dell
1100, 2400 with 9.04 works fine.

As stated above, the radeon on the 2400 is unstable until the intel
drivers are work correctly first in 9.10 for the unused on-board intel
graphics.

I need to stick to the topic to save space here:-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475429] Re: [i945] Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller Freezes when compiz enabled

2010-01-11 Thread takashi torigoe
I tested Lucid and Lucid+xorg-edgers.
( Lucid install & xorg-edgers ppa to sources.list & apt-get upgrade )
Both of them have same problem.

I tried to get batchbuffer dump, but I couldn't it.
The reason is that, the lucid kernel hangs up during "sudo cp -r
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915* dri_debug-$datestr".
It seems that "/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_regs" causes hung up.
(The kernel hungs up when executing "cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_regs"
with console.)

For the record, I got batchbuffer dump except
"/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_regs".
Should I post the dump here?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406865] Re: [GM45] 3D applications fail to run in WINE

2010-01-11 Thread Sandro Mani
Hi,
it is not that fedora has figured out something that ubuntu has not, it is just
that it is more a bleeding edge distribution than ubuntu is, which means that
you often get upstream fixes faster than in ubuntu, but also that you might
have to deal with upstream regressions in a more unplesant way because packages
may get pushed to their repos with less testing. If you want bleeding edge with
ubuntu, you can use a mainline ppa kernel and the X crack pushers repo and then
you should also have the leatest and greatest of features and misfeatures, but
keep in mind that those packages aren't tested at all against stability or even
usability. But if you want newer packages with less effort and risk, you may
also want to give fedora a try.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-01-11 Thread Ky Weichel
Shadetree, do you mean you're using the configuration described in the
guide on your 9.04 machines? What are you dual-booting them with,
Windows, Karmic, or something else entirely? I ask only out of
curiosity.

I figure the reason enabling tiling is ok for those using the "bleeding
edge" configuration in the guide is that this issue has been fixed in
the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel that is available from xorg-
edgers. Another thing to try might be upgrading to one of their
versions (without an xorg.conf, or with one that has tiling enabled) and
seeing if the freezes go away.

Adam, Don't want to get off subject but besides my dell 1100 I have a
2400 that has redeon 2550 graphics and it "=nothing" after fresh install
of karmic.

I later upgraded a new partition of jaunty ext4 and it worked but very
unstable. Desperate, I used Brian's intel PPA and now it is stable even
though I use the radeon card?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406865] Re: [GM45] 3D applications fail to run in WINE

2010-01-11 Thread rasmus nielsen
Hey there guys.

Good comments, read the entire thing through, And i've wondered about
those 32 bit libraries for some time.

I've had this problem with Guild wars in both ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04.

For now i've tried Dungeons and dragons online in wine which gives
somewhat same problem, still a bad drawable. Anyway heres my output:

X Error of failed request: GLXBadDrawable Major opcode of failed request: 153
(GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent) Serial number of
failed request: 1022 Current serial number in output stream: 1022*** Finished
***

This is so annoying.

But i guess fedora must have figured something out that the ubuntu team
did not, 'cause i remember a schoolmate of mine talking about it being
way better with intel graphics.

But is it possible, in anyway to make this work, like it should do
according sandro mani on the new fedora?

Any installable new driver? anything?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2010-01-11 Thread Albert Vilella
@Eric Burgess:
Hi Eric,
Your machine probably has one of the _DSM ACPI calls. Doing a grep on one of
the existing Dell DSDT gives me:

3863:Method (_DSM, 4, NotSerialized)
3903:Return
(\_SB.PCI0.IXVE.IGPU.PLAT (Arg3))
3909:Return
(\_SB.PCI0.IXVE.IGPU.DSMS (Arg3))
3971:Device (CRT0)
3980:Device (LCD0)
3989:Device (SVD0)
3998:Device (DPV0)
4092:Scope (\_SB.PCI0)
4188:Scope (\_SB.PCI0.IXVE.IGPU)
4190:OperationRegion (IGPU, PCI_Config, 0x40, 0x04)
4196:Name (DSMF, 0x00)
4197:Method (_DSM, 4, NotSerialized)
4199:Store ("--- DSM ", Debug)
4217:Store (One, DSMF)
4243:CreateByteField (Arg3, 0x00, DSM2)
4244:If (And (DSM2, 0x10))
4246:And (DSM2, 0x0F, Local0)
4248:Notify (\_SB.PCI0.IXVE.IGPU,
0xD9)
4271:\_SB.PCI0.XVR0.Z01I.DGON ()
4277:
\_SB.PCI0.XVR0.Z01I.DGOF ()
4281:
\_SB.PCI0.XVR0.Z01I.HSTA ()
4295:Return (DSMS (Arg3))

So you should be able to take one of the existing acpi modules and
modify the acpi_get_handle call to use your specific ACPI method:

\_SB.PCI0.IXVE.IGPU.DSMS or something like that.

See this blog post of mine:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-01-11 Thread shadetree
Ky, I am also using this config on two PC's multi booting with 9.04
with no problems. I didn't try using this in 9.10 because I wanted it
fixed for lucid.

There are thousands and thousands of these older chip-set PC's that are
moving to linux, and 8.04 was out of the box working perfect with many
not upgrading because of the graphic issues there after.

I was hoping with help, we could make 10.4 be out of the box too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2010-01-11 Thread Narciso Cerezo
@Fabián,
I apologize if I gave the impression of "complaining" about the effort of the
linux community, but I don't think that is the case.
If you carefully read my messages you will no doubt understand that I was
complaining about *this issue being declined for karmic and lucid*.
I appreciate all the effort, linux has performed a giant leap forward and
Ubuntu specially is the best option in my opinion.
You can read at the asus forum the actual status of this (which is no answer on
asus or nvidia side):
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20091224184305125&board_id=3&model=UL50VT&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
I've also submitted my complaint, yes this is a real complaint, to asus trough
their support form requesting they give the linux community the specs and tools
needed and at the very least that they release a BIOS upgrade to let us choose
the video mode.

Best regards

integrated 9400G and "discrete" 210m. I use the quotes because even
when the 210m is running, it directs its output through the 9400, which
has the only connection to the LCD panel. Apparently the "HybridBoost"
sends some signal to activate the 210m which then runs its output
through the 9400.

There are no relevant settings in the BIOS at all, and the 210m is
entirely dormant in Linux. While hot-switching would be ideal, just
being able to choose at boot- or X-start-time whether to activate the
210m would be a tremendous improvement. Dr_Funkenstein has posted his
DSDT file; is there any other information on this particular
configuration that could be of use? Nvidia, unfortunately, does not
seem inclined to provide HybridBoost support in their Linux drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-01-11 Thread Ky Weichel
I was experiencing this problem with a Dell Dimension 2300 desktop
(Intel 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Graphics Chipset).

Speculating that this was a configuration issue in Karmic, I switched
back to using an xorg.conf file I had used with Jaunty after following
this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 to improve
graphics performance in Jaunty.

I have not experienced a freeze since I started using this xorg.conf
file again. I think the reason may be that it disables tiling. From
the guide:

"N.B.: If you are using an Intel 8xx chipset, tiling cause instability
unless you use the Bleeding-Edge configuration. Therefore: if you are
using the Safe/Optimal configurations, set tiling to false; if you are
using the Bleeding-Edge configuration, set tiling to true."

The "Bleeding-Edge" configuration it refers to involved using drivers
from the xorg-edgers PPA. I was using the "Optimal" configuration and
therefore set tiling to false in my xorg.conf. What I suspect is that
Karmic's default intel driver has this tiling issue, and it is enabled
by default for those who do not use an xorg.conf.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2010-01-11 Thread Fabián Rodríguez
@Narciso, I presume you are in contact with Nvidia and Asus - what has
been their answer to this ? If I were you I would salute the reverse
engineering efforts and community work put on this- not complain.

@Moritz Baumann, all, in order to document this for others, if you find
a BIOS option to configure this, could you be so kind and take a digital
picture of the screen + attach it here and/or provide exact steps to do
such changes ? Thanks in advance for considering this.

2010-01-11 Thread Kai Jauch
It's recoverable with xorg-edgers (either that, or the update to kernel
2.6.32-10)! The display is still blank (backlight off) after opening the lid
again, but vt-switching makes the display usable again, with compiz and
everything.
Attaching dmesg output and Xorg.0.log.
