[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554439] [NEW] 64bit Lucid fails during boot due to Nvidia driver
Public bug reported: On 64 bit Lucid, installed from Beta 1 LiveCD, after installing nvidia-current (which appears to install successfully) on subsequent boots the graphical display fails to load, dumping me to tty1. This also happens with nvidia-173. The only way I have found to get back to a working graphical display is to uninstall nvidia-current from the tty display and reboot. Obviously doing that means the nvidia drivers don't load, and 3D acceleration is unavailable. Using 32 bit Lucid beta on the same computer the nvidia drivers work just fine, the problem seems to be with the 64 bit architecture. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null
I examined the patches mentioned above, and compared them against the xserver code in lucid. All the changes from the patches[1] are in the lucid xserver. I've tried to reproduce the issue on karmic but didn't have success there, so I can't be sure I'm testing lucid correctly to verify it as fixed. You guys are going to need to do this, since you know what you're looking for. But I figure it's safe to assume if adding those patches fixed it before, then since they're in the xserver now the issue is resolved. For future reference, if you attach patches to the bug report itself (as opposed to simply referencing them by link) then the bug will bubble up to the top of various bug listings I look at[2,3] and will be much more likely to gain attention. Also, if you've gone to the trouble of applying a patch to the source package and building it locally, you've gone 80% of the way to fixing the package yourself. The last 20% is to create a debdiff[4] and request an SRU[5]. Not to say you *have* to do that (like I said, if you just post patches to the bug report, it brings them to my attention), but it's totally something you could do if you needed to. Finally, I would *highly* recommend updating the description of bug reports like this one, where the original problem statement is a bit terse, and there's an explosion of comments to have to wade through to understand the current state of the problem. 1: From http://www.mail-archive.com/x...@lists.freedesktop.org/msg02587.html 2: http://www2.bryceharrington.org:8080/X/Reports/ubuntu-x-swat/patches.html 3: http://blog.launchpad.net/bug-tracking/getting-patches-upstream 4: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Howtos/Debdiff 5: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates ** Changed in: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Fix Released -- Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/283128 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xkeyboard-config in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 529387] Re: Screen goes Out of Range when boot into live cd and first time ubuntu boot up
Hi Chewit, yes if you could run 'apport-collect 529387', that'll automatically attach all the info needed. Thank you for taking the time to write such a clear and concise bug report. From your description I can make some pretty good guesses about what's going on. Every monitor has a circuit embedded in it which communicates the device's capabilities (refresh rates, resolutions, etc.) to the computer when asked. It is not uncommon for this information to be incorrectly encoded by the hardware manufacturer. For example, we've seen some manufactures specify the monitor's dimensions in cm's instead of in mm's, or putting in plain old typos. In some cases, for whatever reason, Linux is not able to retrieve the data. This data from the monitor is called EDID. My guess is that something is wrong with your monitor's EDID or X.org's ability to retrieve it. Unfortunately none of the files attached here include the EDID so I can't verify this. Sometimes this is included in the output of 'xrandr --auto' or listed in the Xorg.0.log file itself. In your case neither happened. There is also a pair of tools in the read-edid package to retrieve this - you run it as get-edid | parse-edid. A lot of times this just shows 'EDID fail' though so it might not be helpful. Another angle to try would be to uninstall -nvidia. With Lucid we've brought in an alternative open source video driver for NVIDIA hardware called -nouveau. This uses the linux kernel to retrieve the EDID and configure the resolution modes (this is referred to as Kernel Mode- Setting, or KMS). I doubt this will do any better with your hardware but it's worth a shot. KMS is considered the way forward and is where developer efforts are being focused. Probably the easiest way to test -nouveau would be to boot Lucid via a LiveCD. If you choose to test it on your installed system, note that you'll need to uninstall (and maybe purge) your old -nvidia installation. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting for a page about conflicts between nvidia and nouveau. Finally, I have to ask... why are you sticking with such an old video monitor? 1024x768 is such a limited resolution. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554520] [NEW] tty consoles severely distorted upon resuming from hibernate
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati Upon starting up the system after a shutdown: 1. GUI starts perfectly. 2. Pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 allows access to a tty terminal, as expected. 3. Pressing CTRL+ALT+F7 returns to GUI. After hibernating and resuming from a hibernate: 1. GUI resumes perfectly. 2. However, pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 leads to a severely distorted tty terminal (completely unusable) with random colours flashing. 3. Pressing CTRL+ALT+F7 gets me back to a perfectly sane GUI. This previously was a problem for me when using Ubuntu 9.04, but the problem did not occur after installing fglrx drivers (in an abnormal way since my card (Mobility Radeon X2300) is not supported and I had to use Ubuntu 8.10's version of fglrx after downgrading the xserver). There is better support for my card in Ubuntu 9.10 and I can play 3D games using the open source ATI drivers, but the tty terminal remains a problem (only after a resume from hibernation). Apart from this, When I shutdown after a normal startup, I receive a message saying received NMI for unknown reason... and that I have a hardware problem on the pci bus, dazed and confused but trying to continue. When I shutdown after a resume from hibernation, I only get a distorted screen after the GUI exits, without any messages. The system powers off shortly. I had this problem in Ubuntu 9.04 but overcame it by using the fglrx drivers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494699] Re: Does not support current Lucid kernel (2.6.32) or xserver (1.7)
I have a 64-bit lucid install fully patches as of 2010-04-01 or so. I patched and saw 300 MB of patches including fglrx and kernel patches. I had exactly what #49 Brendan P had happen. Perfectly working system with a radeon 5770. Apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, something indicated I should reboot so I did. When it booted it complained about Missing PCS defaults file /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default. Here's a bigger piece of the log file: (II) Module dri2: vendor=X.Org Foundation compiled for 1.7.6, module version = 1.1.0 ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 2.0 (II) Loading extension DRI2 (II) LoadModule: fglrx (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so (II) Module fglrx: vendor=FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc. compiled for 1.7.1, module version = 8.72.10 Module class: X.Org Video Driver (II) Loading sub module fglrxdrm (II) LoadModule: fglrxdrm (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/modules/linux/libfglrxdrm.so (II) Module fglrxdrm: vendor=FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc. compiled for 1.7.1, module version = 8.72.10 (II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:8.72.10 (II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: 8.72.1 (II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Build Date: Mar 10 2010 23:41:33 (II) Primary Device is: PCI 0...@00:00:0 (WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx (EE) Unable to initialize PCS database (EE) Missing PCS defaults file /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default (EE) No devices detected. I tinkered quite a bit, I reverted the fglrx driver to the previous version, booted the previous kernel, tried the driver from ati.com, all without luck. At some point I had run apt-get update and another batch of patches came down, then I just said aticonfig --initial and it worked. So now as far as I can tell I'm 100%, running 2 20 monitors, radeon 5770, and the current kernel and fglrx driver as supplied by ubuntu. Hi Bryce, Hardware problem is the first think I thought but : - There's never any problem under intrepid or under Windows - The problem appeared the very day I upgraded to Lucid - The problem still doesn't appear if I fall back to the VESA driver Could you provide me a build of the Lucid radeon driver which is pre-KMS by default ? (more than 8 days old, unfortunatly my cache doesn't go that far). I could then confirm that nomodeset is working or not with those older driver and not the newest. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 418282] Re: Touchpad not recognized on Asus U80 and UL30 series. Touchpad Panel missing from mouse settings
So I've been trying to find more information about this driver. I'm new to working on drivers like this, but I'm willing to put in some effort to try and resolve this. From my initial scans it seems to me the main source of the driver is Arjan Opmeer's driver, but that the last touches to the kernel regarding the Elantech driver were 2.6.28 or thereabouts. I'm running 2.6.32. The Xorg synaptics driver is also involved but latest mention there is 0.99 or so, my ubuntu version is 1.2.2. So does that mean current support is not forthcoming? Do we need to get going here and try figure it out ourselves? I'm willing to put in some effort - but I'm trying to find out where we are now, and what's happening. -- Touchpad not recognized on Asus U80 and UL30 series.
