[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663159] [NEW] Logout when switching user - X server error

2010-10-19 Thread Colin Law
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu desktop 10.04 all up to date.
Login as user A, switch to user B. Switch back to user A causes user A to be
logged out and the login screen is shown.
In xorg.0.log.old I see

(II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch
(II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket)
(II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch
(II) intel(0): No memory allocations

Fatal server error:
Failed to submit batchbuffer: Bad file descriptor

May related to bug #576336 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/576336) as I also get a crash when
closing VT after ctl-alt-f1, though I have not managed to see the above

I can now confirm that I can also replicate fully bug #576336 with the
same error in xorg.0.log.old so I guess this may be a duplicate of that
bug. Would it be right to mark it as a duplicate when the user
experience (switch user rather than VT) is completely different?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563387] Re: X Server crashes due probably due to wacom tablet driver

2010-10-19 Thread danstowell
I believe we're also seeing this same bug here, on mythbuntu 10.04 with
a Wacom Graphire 3.

Over the past week or so we've been getting occasional gdm session
crashes which seem to be triggered sometimes when we move the pen into
range on the tablet (i.e. we're just about to perform some mouse action
such as clicking on something) - not always but sometimes. We have
multiple sessions running (using the switch users gui item) and what
happens is that the session which is currently in use vanishes, dropping
us back to another user's gdm session.

The system has previously been running fine with the tablet for months.
We did apply some updates recently - linux kernel update, for example
(now running 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu). I don't yet spot any other
updates which might relate to this, but would be grateful for clues.

I didn't have apport running so no logs yet sorry - but have started
apport now and will post info here next time we manage to crash it.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657976] Re: [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10)

2010-10-19 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
For those of you using CLUTTER_VBLANK=none - you shouldn't be too
afraid of all the spooky error messages in the terminal. The worst
thing it should give you would be some rendering glitches - which is
nothing compared to the pain you have now anyway I guess ;-)

My initial command to make the CLUTTER_VBLANK permanent didn't work,
sorry about that. In stead you can create the required file by hand by
executing 'sudo nano -w /etc/X11/Xsession.d/10unity-quirks' and then
adding one line to that file 'CLUTTER_VBLANK=none' and save it
(Control-X). Then restart your computer.

I think there are two different issues at play here. The one discussed
for this bug is the CLUTTER_VBLANK issue (which seems to happen on a
range of different hardware), the other is probably related to a most
elusive (but very big) memory leak we seem to be triggering on some
very specific variations of i945 cards - this is bug #652864.

While I continue to chase this, I can assure everyone that we are
taking very serious measures to assure that something similar doesn't
happen for Natty.

2400 frame in 5 seconds without kwin stuffs

Booting kubuntu 10.10 from a pendrive I have:
50 frame in 5 secods ( 10fps!!!)

Sounds like the bug #303011

On my eeepc901 same problem:

800 frame in 5 secods with all kwin stuffs
1000 frame in 5 seconds without kwin stuffs

95 frame in 5 secods ( 19fps!!!)

Same problem on my Ubuntu 10.04 pc.

After a short period when I try to logout the screen shows only the background

No other option from keyboard available.
The only option available is reset.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 658183] Re: Critical: 10.04 - 10.10 blank screen on reboot - checking non-existent battery

2010-10-19 Thread Libor Spacek
I have created xorg.conf with vesa video driver entry (copied from
xorg.failsafe).
This enables me to boot up for the first time but, of course, still only in
low graphics with horribly wrong aspect ratio.

Very poor show, 10.10. I think 0.10 would have been a better number,
as in 0 marks out of 10.

As much as I hate the idea, I guess it is time to go back to Windows?!?

I'm using Kubuntu 10.10. The screen had become blank grey, with no
apparent way of getting out of this situation. The cursor could move,
but clicking had no observable effect. I used Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Del to log

This behaviour (KDE getting stuck or X crashing) did not happen in

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2010-10-19 Thread albert fishnets
I have this bug too. I have seen multiple related problems with Core i-7
processors on x-58 MoBos with newer Nvidia cards, posted in other bugs
and forums. Sune Bredahl already mentioned his, but also these forum
post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9971971

http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1592275

Many people are saying things were fine under 10.04 including myself. I
had some random freezes and weird system slow downs under 10.04, but the
slow install, slow system, theme errors, and stuttering in video are all
new with 10.10. Could there be an underlying issue with the hardware
that is causing all of these problems? My hardware worked fine under
10.04 (mostly) and works fine in windows 7. I think this issue may be
part of a bigger problem. Have any of you seen the other bugs described
in these forum post?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 526572] Re: X session log out unexpectedly

2010-10-19 Thread oican
Currently there is no way for me to use (K)Ubuntu 10.10 under Gnome or
KDE. This is really very annoying. I've switched to StumpWM which at
least crashed only one time. Neither KDE nor Gnome is usable here. I
just logs off randomly within minutes and drops me to KDM login screen.

I've uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel which i thought it was
buggy, but the issue still continues. I think this bug's importance
should be raised because it causes major desktop environments to be
unusable.

Regards.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2010-10-19 Thread Reason
Same here killing and starting gnome-settings-daemon as root returned the theme
more or less.
Nautilus still looks bad and the indicator icons still remain as the were.
It does start to hog my CPU though (gnome-settings-daemon) and remains running
on a 100% load.
Killing the process does keep the theme ok.
I've got some issues with virtual machines as well which are new in 10.10 on my
core i7.
Seems they tend to lockup randomly with no trace in a log file (Virtualbox).

Side note: I don't have a x58 chipset (I'm using a laptop).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657976] Re: [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10)

2010-10-19 Thread Tomek Bury
Can someone change the importance of this bug please?

It makes UNE, advertised on the Ubuntu home page, completely useless.
The bug is quite critical, if you ask me, unless you intend to scare
away netbook users .

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2010-10-19 Thread George
I did notice occasionaly that the interface (compiz effects etc.) were
somewhat slower, which I don't think is normal on this class of
hardware. It improved somewhat after upgrading to the latest nVidia
driver, but it's still not as good as 10.04.

There may well be an underlying cause. Meerkat came with new versions
of X and Gnome. Either could be the source of these problems.

2010-10-19 Thread Sean Clarke
Also noticed similiar problem on Foxconn Nettop D510 - system has a
phantom screen, i.e. look at monitor settings and it shows the real
monitor as Monitor 2 and Monitor 1 (aka the primary) is
nonexistent but appears.

On boot up the screen is blank as it is driving the phantom monitor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663328] [NEW] Intel® GM45 Express performance drop on maverick

2010-10-19 Thread Stas Sușcov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I own a lenovo T400 laptop with an Intel® GM45 Express gpu card
(basically gma4500), and got installed maverick on a clean partition

I use to play a game called Heroes of Newerth (native build, not through
Wine), and the performance drop is horrible, no characters nor buildings
are visible in the game, just the terrain.

Also the 3D acceleration generates a lot of artifacts, like black lines and
parts of black screen.
http://ubuntuone.com/p/LCe/

Can somebody point me to the right direction, what should I upgrade/downgrade
to get the 3D support back (as in Lucid)?
Thanks.

@Tomek
I recognise that the bug is critical, the question is whether it can be
addressed for Maverick, or whether we should rather document the issue
as a blocker on that hardware and fix it for Natty.

OK, it happened again. Apport didn't detect it (didn't show any info
when I next logged in, nor is there anything in /var/crash). So I've
attached some recent logs. The dmesg tail is immediately after the
crash, also shown below. The other logs are grabbed after restarting the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663382] [NEW] xterm doesn't display inputted text properly

2010-10-19 Thread Avi Greenbury
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xterm

Since upgrading to 10.10, typed characters in xterm come up mostly
unreadable. Hasn't affected anything else that I've found. Text output
by applications is perfectly readable, it's only entered text that's

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663388] [NEW] [RV770] Picture gets cropped

2010-10-19 Thread Rotonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Radeon 4870.

1920x1200 panel, DVI. EDID autodetect.

The top and left of visuals get cropped to what would appear to be
approximately a 1600x1080 of an area on the screen.

Using xrandr to set your resolution to some other size either produces a
black screen (out of which you can escape by blindly xrandring your way
back) or a smaller resolution with the same crop issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663382] Re: xterm doesn't display inputted text properly

2010-10-19 Thread Avi Greenbury
It's bad when you type it in. If you then switch focus to another
window, and back to xterm, it's fine. But any subsequently-entered text
is bad, again until the focus changes away and back again.

I'm not convinced this is a problem in xterm itself now, but I've no
idea what it is in.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 600178] Re: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws

2010-10-19 Thread Mahendra Tallur
I'm not sure my comment will be relevant, but I've just noticed some
tearing *at the top of the screen only* (that's barely noticeable -- in
openGL 2D games like SMC for instance), when using nvidia proprietary
drivers + compiz.

Please note I'm doing the following which usually gives a flawless output but
not now as of Ubuntu 10.10 :
- Option DynamicTwinView false in /etc/Xorg.conf so that the right refresh
rate is given by the driver (I hope nvidia will fix it one day, so that it's
not necessary anymore)
- nvidia-settings : I tick sync to VBL everywhere
- CCSM : I tick : autodetect vsync + sync to VBL

This bug was definitely not there *before* Lucid. Was probably there in
Lucid though. It's very noticeable in SMC or Steelstorm for instance but
not much in regular 3D apps with no 2D scrolling.

Cheers !

Thanks for the quick response. The modprobe command didn't do anything,

understand what the daemon line does, but when I typed it in, it
responded with daemonizing process! Afterward, I didn't see any

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663415] [NEW] Display keeps refreshing in certain games

2010-10-19 Thread Christopher Neville-Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

In at least three games (Crack Attack, Extreme Tux Racer and
SuperTuxKart), the display keeps reloading, leading to some sort of
annoying flicker. It's difficult to describe to someone who hasn't seen
this, but hopefully this screenshot might give a clue of what's going

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663480] [NEW] ATI proprietary driver (fglrx) does not provide correct EDID data

2010-10-19 Thread Vv
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fglrx

I ran into this bug when using gnome-color-manager (2.32.0-0, in Pascal
de Brujin's PPA).

GCM could not correctly detect my screen and gave me an error output
when trying to dump EDID data: failed to parse edid.

The screen's EDID is correct since get-edid/parse-edid is not affected
by this problem and gives correct results.

According to GCM's author Richard Hughes :

GCM, like the display capplet just reads the X output property EDID
(and EDID_DATA for some broken drivers) which is supposed to be a cached
copy (by the display driver) to avoid hitting the hardware every time,
which is very slow.

It's likely the fglrx are not doing the EDID block copy correctly, given
that there is only the first 128 byte block present [in the GCM EDID
dump].

Using the free driver solves the problem.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10.
fglrx version is 2:8.780-ubuntu2.

Please tell me if you need additional information.

Public bug reported:

For me, everything worked fine on 10.04. Since I upgraded to 10.10, the
desktop freezes regularly on my laptop. Only thing that works after that
is pressing the power button for about 4s to switch power off.

I'm also using nvidia drivers (nvidia-current 260.19.06-0ubuntu1) with a
Quadro FX 770M.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663526] [NEW] Vlc crashes on open file dialog taking X down

2010-10-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: vlc

1. Using Maverick Meerkat with 2.6.35 kernel and closed fglrx driver.
2. Vlc is 1.1.4-1ubuntu1

4. When using advanced open file, open stream etc (everything that brings
advanced open dialog), my X server crashes and I have to log in again.

Vlc produces no logs (vlc vlclog), but I have strace of the crash till X
closed it (enclosed). If you want, I can produce similar logs with nohup or
give some gdb traces, if you will say which.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663526] Re: Vlc crashes on open file dialog taking X down

2010-10-19 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
From that trace, VLC is _not_ crashing. It's aborting because the X
server disconnected it.

As for why X crashes, I don't know but that's not a VLC bug. Most
probably a video driver bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 651294] Re: X crash on KDM logout (still - yes, really)

2010-10-19 Thread Albert Damen
I have been trying to debug this and think I found the problem:
- The crash is caused when an already freed drawable is used (drawable contents
are invalid)
- The crashing resource always has xid=0. If I prevent DrawableGone calls when
xid=0, the crash does not happen. XID=0 seems strange, as the minimum xid
should be SERVER_MINID (=32). Also, walking through
clientTable[0]-resources[0] shows we have multiple resources with xid=0, which
seems strange as well (i.e. calling FreeResource(0, x) may well remove the
wrong resource).
- The resources with xid=0 are added via DoCreateGLXDrawable, where pDraw-id
is used to add the resource. pDraw-id is 0 in these calls.
- The pDraw with xid=0 should be the X pixmap backing the GLX pixmap. This
pixmap is created via ProcCompositeNameWindowPixmap. This function indeed
creates pixmaps with drawable.id=0.

The glxdrawable should be registered with the glxdrawableid and the
drawableid of the backing X pixmap, as stated in the comment in
DoCreateGLXDrawable. In DoCreateGLXDrawable this would be easy, but
drawableGone does not get this pixmaps drawableid as parameter.
Therefore in my opinion this could only work if the pixmaps drawableid
is properly set, so I changed ProcCompositeNameWindowPixmap to set the
pixmaps drawableid to stuff-pixmap (like ProcCreatePixmap would do).
With that change I no longer get resources with xid=0 and KDM does not
crash anymore when I logout.

So far all seems to work fine, but I am not sure if setting the drawable
id like this is safe.

The attachment contains gdb traces with and without my change (X built
without optimization to get access to all symbols).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 492782] Re: Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume)

2010-10-19 Thread Shaved Wookie
Otto - I was getting this problem on KDE and don't have Gnome installed
at all, so I don't think it's gnome specific. Admittedly I didn't get it
for months and then just got it once a few weeks back. If it's not the
desktop environment, and it's not the video driver / hardware, then that
suggests to me that it's probably something X / Kernel related.
