[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 719295] Re: With external monitor attached, netbook screen is reduced in widht
Yes, what's going on is when you attach the external monitor the Linux kernel fires an event to reconfigure the monitors automatically. gnome- display-properties hears that event and then changes the monitors to match what's in your monitors.xml config file. Looking at your xrandr output, it shows your laptop LVDS1 screen configured to 800x600, and that's what is indicated as the desired resolution in your monitors.xml for LVDS1. So, you just need to go to the GUI configuration tool and reconfigure your monitors the way you want them. If you need technical support about how to configure your computer, you might try asking on http://askubuntu.com. I think this can be closed as a non-bug, but I'll refile this to gnome- control-center in case there is a usability issue or in case the control tool isn't behaving correctly. ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) => gnome-control- center (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/719295 Title: With external monitor attached, netbook screen is reduced in widht ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg When trying to start Xorg on this machine the screen flashes several times before falling back to text mode. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 715096] Re: [i945gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x02000011)
Here is a kernel with a DEBUG patch added (note this is not a fix, just a mechanism to confirm the root cause). Could you affected please test out these kernels (they should work on Maverick too) and report back here. The kernels are at the URL below: http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp714719-natty/ After booting this, please do whatever you do to reproduce the freeze (if you can), then ssh into the box and collect the output of 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and post it here. If you can't reproduce the crash within say a day or so, report that back here too. If it happens that you haven't seen a freeze at all for a few days (esp. if you haven't seen it after doing a system update), then it may have been solved via a mystery kernel fix. In that case please note so here and the bug report can be set to 'Fix Released'. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/715096 Title: [i945gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x0211) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 298707] Re: wacom tablet stylus input jumps to next screen prematurely in dual monitor set-up
i was having the very same problem as most here. I went to the irc tonight and got some very welcome help from "whot". after some serching (the dependencies list are for fedora and thus do not match with deb/ubuntu perfectly) I got much closer to a viable fix. there are new drivers. They present a new problem, but you can use both screens while taking advantage of separate X screens. The only problem I noticed so far is that when at the very reaches of the right hand side of my main x screen the pointer will jump to the second x screen. after it does this I have to use the mouse (wacom grapphire 2) to return to the first x screen to use the pen if I need to. Not sure what the reason for this is, but I believe it to be a step in the right direction. Thanks "Whot". P.S. My wheel on my wacom mouse still only scrolls down no matter which way I roll it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xf86-input-wacom in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298707 Title: wacom tablet stylus input jumps to next screen prematurely in dual monitor set-up ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 717114] Re: [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack with terminal programs
Okay, now to some questions... Stefano can you please try the following: 1. It looks like you're running compiz. Try turning off compiz (from login screen select Classic Desktop - no effects). If the corruption goes away after that, then I'm guessing a mesa/compiz 3d rendering bug. If it's still present then it's more X-y. 2. In the duped bug you mention you saw this since the introduction of the new stack. Do you recall more precisely when you started noticing it? We upgraded mesa, the kernel, and xserver all within a period of a couple weeks, and any one of those could cause a bug like this. If you know when exactly it started then that gives a strong clue what to look at first. 3. Do you have the 2.6.37 kernel still installed? If so, try booting that and reproducing the issue. If it can't be reproduced, then we know it's a kernel bug (probably drm), and if it can then we can at least get the kernel ruled out. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/717114 Title: [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack with terminal programs ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

@kees, I'd like you also to post a photo or screenshot here, even if you're certain it's a dupe. If it is the same bug it might give some added context. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 717114] Re: [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack with terminal programs
@Eric, hmm. Unless Stefano also sees it with web browsers, my preference would be to handle this as a terminal specific bug (we also have bug #718339 and bug #713440 about terminal-related corruptions, although both seem distinct from this bug). It's also easily conceivable that there is a terminal specific corruption as well as an unrelated firefox related corruption. Anyway, so Eric I would like to have you file a new bug report (ubuntu- bug xorg), mention this bug report as possibly related, and attach photos showing the corruption you see - include both the Slashdot.org corruption case and the terminal case (gnome-terminal as well as xterm if possible). ** Summary changed: - [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack with xterm + [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack with terminal programs -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/717114 Title: [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack with terminal programs ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 718339] Re: resizing xterm larger causes corruption onscreen and in terminal when using compiz
Thanks for providing a good bug description. l8gravely, you should also run 'apport-collect 718339' to attach some logs and config files we like to have for troubleshooting X bugs. The specificity of this to compiz suggests an issue in mesa or kernel drm, rather than xterm. For now let's treat it as a mesa bug. Might be -radeon specific. On current natty running -radeon with no compiz, I can confirm that the issue does not occur (tested with xterm running top, mutt, etc. and resizing the window). (I'll test with compiz once I've finished building a new mesa to test.) Meanwhile, please do attach screenshots (or digital photos if the corruption doesn't show up with a simple screenshot). With corruption bugs we ALWAYS like to have images since often what looks like noise can reveal details to a knowledgeable expert about what the video memory is up to. Also, there have been several other xterm/corruption bug reports lately (see also bug #713440 and bug #717114). A photo would help prove whether this is a dupe of one of those or not. Again, please provide a photo and run apport-collect 718339. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 526163] Re: "Make CapsLock an additional control key" belongs in 'CapsLock key behavior' category
Unfortunately the code doesn't permit having a given option listed in multiple places. For instance; if you toggle the checkbox in one place, it'd need to toggle the duplicate checkbox in the other place, and the code just isn't set up to do that. Also, one could argue that given how many options are already present there, adding a capability to also add duplicates of items might actually make the already confusing situation *worse* by increasing the number of items the user would need to thumb through. The other option to adding dupes would be to move the item to the Caps Lock section. It seems to me though that it makes as much sense under Control Key as it does under Caps Lock, so it's hard to justify the change. If you do feel it should be moved, please feel free to reopen the upstream bug (http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34365) and make the case to Sergey - it sounds like he'd be open to the idea but would need some convincing. ** Changed in: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xkeyboard-config in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/526163 Title: "Make CapsLock an additional control key" belongs in 'CapsLock key behavior' category ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573312] Re: Wrong resolution in GDM when using external monitor connected to laptop - Intel chipset
Louis, you said that this bug is "very low on anyone's priority list" but it affects me too and is a major nuisance. At home, I always boot up my laptop with the lid closed and an external monitor on. GDM fails to set the correct resolution, and the resolution is still wrong after I log in: I have to run xrandr to correct it. I believe that GDM (or the X server?) is failing to realize that the lid is closed and that the laptop display should be ignored (at least, that's the behavior I would like). Instead, GDM (or the X server) is choosing the highest resolution common to both the laptop display and the external monitor -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libxrandr in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573312 Title: Wrong resolution in GDM when using external monitor connected to laptop - Intel chipset ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I see this too. It does not always happen, but when it does, that terminal will remain affected. Doing a visual bell (terminal flash) will clean up the corruption, but then I can trigger it again by having something write a lot to the terminal, and the scrolling will get corrupted. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 716596] Re: Corruption during boot-up
Yep, seems the corruption is gone with latest kernel and X bits. I just rebooted again. I noticed a couple oddities but no corruption: On what I think is the plymouth splash screen, I see what looks to be parts of shadows from some letters. I'm guessing that since I never see the logo during boot, this is just plymouth failing during rendering or something. Then later there's a black flicker when X kicks in, and for a very brief moment I see what looks like a sliced up incorrectly-tiled image of the desktop, but it clears and the right desktop image shows. But no corruption or other stuff shown on the screen that looks like it'd be problematic, as before. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 653443] [NEW] Corrupt graphics after bootsplash on dell inspiron 600m
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon Hi there. I'm trying my best to file this properly, and I hope the report can help pinpoint the issue I'm having. Part of this is a repost from the SO INCREDIBLY HELPFUL Launchpad-Answers Ubuntu section, but I have some more information now and feel better about posting an official bug. Here goes: "Hey everyone. I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper, and for the most part it's been great times. My desktop computer is totally solid, even while running the Maverick beta. However, I've run into a large issue trying to get the current Maverick build running on my old laptop. The device in question is a Dell Inspiron 600M (got it from someone who didn't want it anymore). I had it running Lucid with no huge issues, but I wanted to take advantage of the nicer theme and upgrades to the package repos. I wouldn't have bothered this early, but as I said, it's been running nicely on my desktop. As such, I seem to have hit a pretty nasty bug/regression, and I'm wondering if anyone can help out. Here's what I've got: I installed the beta using the same cd I had made for my desktop. Installation went through without an issue, and I was able to reboot into my new desktop with no problem. However, after running update manager to do a partial upgrade into the current state of Maverick, I'm unable to get the computer to properly boot on restart. After the ubuntu logo shows up, insead of going properly to the login screen I get a strange graphic... basically a wall containing the purple/white-ish hues of the login background, but thinly vertically striped (it would seem, sort of hard to properly explain, as the stripes are the same color). If I blindly hit enter, and enter my password, the screen goes a strange pattern of grey (similar to the toolbars on the desktop). I couldn't get it to properly do anything from here, except that once or twice I was able to ctrl-alt-del and hit enter to shut down (so keyboard input is working). It kinda sounds like part of whatever is on the screen (a toolbar, for example) is being stretched through the whole screen, but it doesn't look like a resolution issue. I tried reinstalling many, many times (very tedious) in different fashions, to try and nail down what might be the culprit..." And I think I have! I've gone through over 400 packages, often updating one at a time and then restarting to try and find which package is giving me trouble, and it seems to be this one: upon installing gnome- settings daemon on a Maverick Beta build and restarting, I'm getting the graphical corruption again. I posted my issue on September 19th, so the issue must have happened in an update to g-s-d between the publishing of the beta iso (September 2nd) and then. If it helps, I've tried installing the RC directly using that iso, and I get the same corruption. So... I dunno. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this out, since no one seemed interested in helping with the grunt-work. Is there anything I can do to further nail down this bug? I'd really like to help get it fixed before Maverick final comes out, assuming it isn't something specific to my laptop specifically. I've run out of computers to test, and my desktop is still running up-to-date Maverick perfectly.
