Nope, new kernel didn't help; it actually made things worse. I've attached my dmesg showing the BUG message. When booting I end up seeing the text output from the boot process with a mouse cursor on top of it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 580719] Re: Pen crazy in tablet PC, Lucid
This bug seems similar to one I am now encountering after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10. While using Xournal, the stylus will start to write while the stylus is not touching the screen. I am also getting the behavior described above. While using 10.04, I did not have this problem. The sylus would sometimes lock up, but I could fix this by causing the laptop to sleep, then awaken. That trick does not work for me with 10.10. I need to reboot X or reboot entirely. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 721903] Re: [i855] GPU lockup 01dc3de6 (IPEHR: 0x02000004)
Hi Jim, thanks for the bug report and sorry you are having trouble. We're no longer handling bug reports for i8xx graphics chips here in Ubuntu, you'll want to go upstream directly in order to help out - http://bugs.freedesktop.org. Don't worry, we're still providing i8xx functionality in the driver, we're just not going to be doing anything in the distro beyond what upstream provides in their driver releases. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/721903 Title: [i855] GPU lockup 01dc3de6 (IPEHR: 0x0204) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 717114] Re: [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack with terminal programs
I've forwarded this bug upstream to http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34584 - please subscribe yourself to this bug, in case they need further information or wish you to test something. Since Stefano git bisected down to a specific kernel tree commit (thanks bunches Stefano!) it seems safe to say it's a kernel bug rather than xorg at this point. But I've gone ahead and upstreamed the bug to the -intel driver (the bisection search points to a git commit from one of the Intel driver developers). Even though this is definitely a kernel bug rather than X, I'll leave the -intel task open for a little bit, in case there are more dupe bug reports about this issue filed to X. ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #34584 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34584 ** Also affects: xorg-server via http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34584 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Natty) Assignee: (unassigned) => Canonical Kernel Team (canonical-kernel-team) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Natty) Importance: Undecided => High ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Natty) Milestone: None => natty-alpha-3 ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu Natty) Milestone: natty-alpha-3 => None ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu Natty) Assignee: Canonical Kernel Team (canonical-kernel-team) => (unassigned) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/717114 Title: [i945gm] Screen Corruption with new Xorg stack with terminal programs ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Thanks Liam, I've fed this information upstream. It appears likely that all these i915/i945 lockup bugs may be related to a common root cause, potentially fixed by this patch: commit 5e78330126e23e009502b21d1efdabd68ab91397 Author: Daniel Vetter Date: Sun Nov 14 22:32:36 2010 +0100 drm/i915: fix relaxed tiling for gen <= 3 && !g33 g33/pineview doesn't have any alignment constrains for unfenced tiled buffers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573290] Re: [x1400] Dual monitor distortion / crash (Lucid AMD64)
Will there be a resolution to this issue at some point in the near future? I have the same exact issue on Thinkpad T60 which has a x1400 ATI Radeon Chip. My problem is that I cannot use this laptop for presentations as the projector is essentially unusable! Disabling KMS works but distorts boot screen and leaves visible artifacts on the screen until mouse is moved over them - in a consistent manner. This, thus, is not a solution. I have read that running 2.6.34-Lucid version of kernel fixes the issue, but I would like not to deviate from official packages. This, therefore, is not a solution either. I wonder if there are any plans to address this? Exactly what drives > such a decision that excludes so many people. Calm down. Yeah I know it's a pisser. But it doesn't mean 8xx is a lost cause or that we don't care, just that here in the Ubuntu distro we're not officially providing "development support". That does not mean we won't ship working 8xx, just that we're going to provide the upstream driver "as-is" and not do any tweaks/patches/config changes to it. I know your question is probably rhetorical, but I'm going to answer it anyway. In a way, I think this is for the best. In the past upstream has neglected 8xx a good deal, and we've gotten tons and tons of bug reports about 8xx problems. In the past I've put a lot of manhours into 8xx pulling patches, fiddling with settings, forwarding bug reports, and even poking Intel engineers in person. But it has proven to be a game of wack-a-mole. At the distro level, we find too often when we fix a bug for one set of users, it just causes breakage for some other set. The problem is not that there was a distinct set of 8xx cards that just need support. 8xx was "special" in that hardware manufacturers had leeway in how they wired the chips into their system, so there can be wide variations from one system to the next, and tuning the software to work properly is more art than science. It is very trial and error, and very hard to do if you don't have the hardware in front of you. But the good news is that upstream has started looking into some of these issues, which is good becauyse they're much better situated to figure out the issues. The best thing we can do at the distro level is to *not* try to work around problems ourselves, but get out of the way and ship as clean to upstream as possible, and encourage people to supply testing feedback directly to upstream. > I for one will not go out and purchase compatible equipment. Is Ubuntu > "nudging" users into their idea of what equipment we should use? Yes, basically. Actually, the nudge I intend to give is that 8xx owners wanting to stick with incompatible equipment and wanting to participate in QA via bug reports can best help by working with upstream directly. They need testers, and they need higher bandwidth than is possible when I'm having to be a go-between you and them. Lucid was the last version we really worked in earnest on 8xx, since we knew that release would be around for a while. So we figure that's an option too. (Canonical doesn't have any hardware contracts for supporting 8xx; we did the work just as community service.) Debian and other distros may also be carrying older versions of the video driver, so those might be an option for some folk too. The 8xx issues are largely upstream and so should be cross-distro but you might get lucky experimenting with other distros. Anyway, we are not going to blacklist 8xx or excise it from the -intel driver, and it may work for many people. But we're not going to invest energies into futzing with it, backporting patches, or forwarding any more bug reports. So closing bug reports and nuding people to go upstream is the best we can do. Hopefully if they do so, it'll make 8xx better down the road, and maybe we can give better support in the distro for it some day. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 723300] [NEW] Screen freeze on ctrl-alt-f7 when trying to change virtual terminal
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Dell Studio 15, Radeon graphics, Ubuntu 10.04. Display freezes entirely, requiring a hard power-down reboot, whenever ctrl-alt-f7 is pressed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 492782] Re: Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume)
This bug also affects me, on Dell Studio 15, Ubuntu 10.04. For a while, the workaround at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/554438/comments/21 was effective, but recently ctrl-alt-f7 started completely freezing my display, forcing me to power-off reboot. ( I have not yet found a workaround for that problem, but for the moment I am assuming that that is a separate issue.) The workaround of changing virtual desktops (via ctrl-alt-leftArrrow and ctrl-alt-rightArrow) does NOT work for me. The partial workaround of making the pointer visible when ctrl is pressed is helpful, but not a full workaround: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/64333/comments/2 The gedit workaround described at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/492782/comments/3 *does* work for me, though it is inconvenient to be blindly trying to start up an instance of gedit after every suspend/resume cycle. To make it slightly more convenient, I modified the code at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/554438/comments/21 to run gedit automatically upon resuming. I did this by placing the following shell script (and remember to chmod +x 99_mousecursor) in /etc/pm/sleep.d/99_mousecursor #!/bin/sh case "${1}" in hibernate) #nothing ;; resume|thaw) # dbooth 2/21/11: this is a workaround for the mouse pointer being # invisible after suspend/resume, given that ctrl-alt-f7 now # freezes my display, so i can no longer use the workaround # described at # https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/554438/comments/21 # The gedit workaround requires both a key press in gedit # and the pointer must be within the gedit window. /usr/bin/xrefresh -display ":0.0" /usr/bin/gedit --display :0.0 ;; suspend) ;; esac -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/492782 Title: Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Hi Alex, If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. [This is an automated message. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 723072] [NEW] Synaptics is obsolete
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: synaptic Dear sir or madam or robot, because of the announcement (http://www.synaptics.com/solutions/technology/gestures/touchpad-linux) that your touchpads are now fully supported by some Linux distributions, or the gesture suite receives a Linux porting, I have acquired a Toshiba Satellite L670-1DL. Unfortunately, I now had to notice that the support is limited to OEM customers. I, as the end user, choose with my purchase which products are being recognized on the market. Sadly, no of your products meet my claims. I have a "Multitouchpad" from your home and can't use it because of vain restrictions. This harms our relationship. Open the source! Greetings, Martin Kauffmann PS.: This is more than a bugreport, than a open letter ;-) ** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Synaptics is obsolete https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/723072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 723061] Re: apport hook crashes
The compiz hook is a hard link to the xorg one, redirecting. (btw, to xorg packagers: I'll change that back to have our own compiz hook later, including xorg info only if needed) ** Package changed: compiz (Ubuntu) => xorg (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/723061 Title: apport hook crashes ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
