[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 733989] Re: dragging with Dell Mini 10v track pad is unforgiving

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Is this a dupe of bug 736523?

Fwiw, I have a Dell Mini 10v and can confirm that click + drag has quit
working of of the last few weeks. Same behavior with unity vs.
metacity.

kolio, not sure what you're talking about. The Radeon HD 5650 came on

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725580] Re: black screen on boot on radeon 9200

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Alright, well black screen on boot issues that occur with kernel
modesetting but not userspace modesetting are kernel bugs. Too a more
actionable set of logs weren't collectable, else I could have at least
forwarded it upstream.

But now it sounds like a lot worse problems are at play, but they're
earlier on / deeper down than X anyway.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 718339] Re: resizing xterm larger causes corruption onscreen and in terminal when using compiz

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Fwiw, the lines not re-painting properly might be the same as a recently
fixed kernel bug, so that aspect may have gone away now. But that bug
didn't display corruption when resizing xterms, and wasn't particular to
mesa, so guessing you still have this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725600] Re: nvidia EDID issue, wrong resolution selected

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, even with just one attached the log makes it pretty clear that
-nvidia doesn't much like your monitor.

Hmm, by chance does it work properly when you boot into Classic Desktop
(no effects)? Perhaps

[26.834] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): The EDID read for display device CRT-0 is
invalid:
[26.834] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): unrecognized EDID Header.

I assume it makes no difference whether you're running Classic Desktop
(no effects), vs. Unity? (Sometimes that makes a difference, but I'm
guessing not in this case.)

Not sure there's much we can do to help in this case, since the EDID
handling code is internal to the proprietary driver. For a workaround
you can try hand-crafting an xorg.conf either by providing horizontal
and vertical sync rates and your preferred resolution, or by providing
an edid override.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 730823] Re: Input device button/click not working on fresh Natty Alpha 3 install

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Andy,

Are you still experiencing this issue? There were a bunch of fixes to
the input stack the past couple weeks and I'm wondering if that might
have resolved it.

Fwiw, you may be right it's a kernel issue, although these can be highly
hardware-specific, so while you might share similar symptoms as bug
#582809 it may not be a dupe; especially since that one was filed
against maverick.

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Have you had any other crashes like this one either before or after?

The crash occurs due to some invalid memory situation, but unfortunately
it's unclear why it's failing since the stacktrace consists of only a
single call. We did have some memory related issues a while back which
have since been resolved, so if you've not seen this crash lately and if
no one else files similar reports, perhaps the issue can now be closed
as resolved.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655832] Re: X server 1.9.0 crashes reproducibly when a lot of gnome-terminal windows are opened on GeForce 8800 GTS/nvidia drivers/compiz with `normal' visual effects

2011-03-18 Thread Cas
I have encountered this same bug randomly when opening just a single
gnome-terminal, usually called by another app (could test opening many
gnome-terminals as the OP reports). The screen strobes wildy for about a
few minutes and then the it returns to the desktop but whole display is
corrupted and barely usable so the machine needs restarted.

I am fairly certain that 260.19.06 is stable and that this occurs only
with 270.x drivers on Maverick 10.10

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 735126] Re: [natty] system freezes on boot without disabling KMS

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
If you plug in an ethernet cable and then boot, are you able to ssh in?
If so, you can gather the log files that way. If not, then you may have
a deeper kernel bug at work.

Without knowing the errors being encountered it's hard to guess what
might be wrong; I have two -ati systems I regularly test natty on and
neither freezes in this fashion, so I don't reproduce the problem
myself.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 736523] Re: cannot left click and drag with touchpad (regression)

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Confirmed; I can reproduce this behavior on my netbook. But not my
laptop (which also has a synaptics touchpad). I'll update both to
current natty to see what happens.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 728101] Re: Closing laptop lid causes screen to freeze

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, offhand it sounds like a bad lid status bug in the kernel.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#Intel No Display After Lid Close Quirks:
i915/intel_lvds.c

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is related to another but I filed, but I wanted debug information
to be preserved. As I said in bug #726918, whenever I leave my laptop
lid closed for a long enough period of time and power manager settings
kick in, the screen locks up, preventing the cursor that I can still
move from interacting with any screen elements (and the clock freezes,
too.) Now, it appears even leaving the lid left down for a few minutes
triggers this issue. Anyways, I hope the extra debug info helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737972] [NEW] drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

2011-03-18 Thread mic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This happens usualy in 10 minutes after login. Graphics freezes, but
ctrl-alt-f1 usualy works (sometimes not) and I am able to run metacity from
console to continue with work (and to send this bug report). Interesting parts
from dmesg are these:
741.124066] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
GPU hung
[ 741.125460] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns

libc-2.13.so[f07000+15a000]

Sometimes computer feezes totally (I can onlymove with mouse, keyboard
is not working). Usualy computer freezes in 20 minuts after running
metacity --replace.

I am able to provide further informations, or run some test, justl et me
know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737900] Re: Screen corruption (mainly in Terminator) intel 945/natty

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Yep, looks like a case of bug 717114 which you'll be happy to know is
fixed in your next kernel update James. :-)

(Although at least one person says they still have the behavior, so
possibly ymmv; reopen bug if it doesn't go away on the latest kernel.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737967] [NEW] Text display errors

2011-03-18 Thread Jarrett Chisholm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Basically, text in Ubuntu tends not to draw quite right. Please see the
attached screenshot (desktop1.png) for a visual.

I've noticed this happening in Ubuntu, Thunderbird, and Eclipse (the
main 3 programs I use).

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu
11.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center
xorg

3) What you expected to happen
The text to printer properly/legibly.

4) What happened instead
The text does not always display properly.

children and adults with limited mobility who do not have resources to
obtain a console however, they can obtain cheap desktops and laptops
(mostly donated).

4. jscal output example:
hopeforkids@a-pro:~$ jscal -c /dev/input/js1
Joystick has 8 axes and 11 buttons.
Correction for axis 0 is none (raw), precision is 0.

say, but this is probably a dupe of the (now fixed) bug 733518, which
has been a commonly reported compiz crash due to X.

Can you check if this is now fixed? This bug looks a lot like bug
702090 which is now solved, so I'm going to assume that fixes this one
as well.

If it doesn't, please file a new bug when the apport bug reporting
dialog pops up.

fixed. I'm going to optimistically close this bug as solved as a

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 698160] Re: Natty: Kernel 2.6.37 - suspend broken

2011-03-18 Thread Thilo-Alexander Ginkel
I tested the current Natty kernel (2.6.38-020638rc8-generic) on Maverick
(as it solves an unrelated bug for me) and can confirm that this issue
is still present in that version, i.e., the suspend stops before being
complete (the HDDs have been turned off already, though) and effectively
freezes the computer.

If there is anything I can do to help debugging the issue, please let me
know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503041] Re: Mouse lags while moving it and clicking any keys

2011-03-18 Thread Roman Kogan
Found the cause. The problem is caused by syndaemon running in background.
Running
"killall syndaemon" in the terminal restores normal mouse behavior. Unchecking
"disable while typing" option in Mouse settings, apparently, does not shut down
syndaemon nor prevent it from starting on the next reboot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737891] [NEW] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA

2011-03-18 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils

While trying to connect external monitors through VGA in my Lenovo x201
with Intel HD Video graphics, gnome-display-properties fails to
correctly display in the external monitors IF LVDS is set to off. If
LVDS is kept on, then external monitors work correctly (Note that I'm
not duplicating screens between LVDS and the external monitors).

To reproduce, do as follows:

1. Connect external monitor to VGA output.
2. Launch gnome-display-properties and enable external monitors.
3. At this point, both LVDS and external monitor should be working just fine.
4. Using gnome-display-properties, turn off LVDS.
5. At this point, the image in the external monitor looks like [1].

Now, note that when disabling LVDS with xrandr instead of gnome-display-
properties, then the external monitors have a correct image and [1] is
not reproduced.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737482] Re: Touchpad on Gigabyte T1005 not working without extra kernel parameter

2011-03-18 Thread Marius Kotsbak
Well, the fix is to add this kernel parameter: 'i8042.noloop=1' so it is
probably a kernel module issue? See bug #87262, it is reported against
the kernel package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737873] [NEW] Xorg freeze on Hw Cursor initialization

2011-03-18 Thread nss

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737482] Re: Touchpad on Gigabyte T1005 not working in natty alpha 3

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, there is a touchpad listed in peripherals.txt but I don't know if
that's significant at all. Certainly there's no sign of it in the
Xorg.0.log, which there *should* be if the kernel is exposing the
device.

What does the output of `sudo lsinput` look like?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737454] Re: xorg high cpu usage with compiz while using top command; goes away when compiz is killed

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
High X CPU issues are almost always due to some client application
driving the load up. As long as it doesn't crash X and things keep
working, there isn't anything wrong with X - it's the client app that
needs fixed. ;-)

In this case, since you found cpu usage went down when compiz was turned
off, that indicates something compiz does is causing the excess load.
Refiling.

Btw, on another bug report I see the reason the hook fails is because
the system runs out of memory, so the utility simply can't allocate the
memory it needs to operate. My best guess is that's what's happening in
this case too.

If you want, you could try sshing into the locked up box and collecting
the data manually. You'll need to:

Kill X and anything else that might be consuming memory to make some
space:

  sudo kill -9 `pidof X`

copy this file:

  sudo cp /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state ~/i915_error_state.txt

and run this command:

  sudo intel_gpu_dump > ~/intel_gpu_dump.txt

Attach both to this bug report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 733073] Re: [gm45] GPU lockup - i915_error_state failed in allocation of memory

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
>From dupe (and upstream discussion):
i915_error_state: Error: [Errno 12] Cannot allocate memory

Best guess is this is probably a dupe of 702090 or one of the gm45 bugs
(which I suspect are just subcases of bug 702090). We have a fix in the
works for 702090 in process of being uploaded so I think that will take
care of the underlying problem.

So I'm going to focus this bug report on the utility failure.
i915_error_state seems to have failed during the automatic collection
due to the system running out of memory. We should look at if the
utility can be made more robust, or else adjust the apport hook to
either free up memory or suppress filing bug reports in this case.
